I'm really jealous of all of these hackerspaces. I want to join or start one so badly, but I can only think of a very small handful of people here who would be interested, and the nearest one to me is about 6 hours away.

I bought a "science" oven for our space yesterday ($50 electric oven from craigslist). The current plan is to use the oven for curing powder coated parts and the burners to brew beer. I'll also need to make some sort of sign warning people to never ever put food in it after the first powder coated part gets baked.

First thing you should powder coat is the sign telling people not to use it for food.

Wonderful! We always love to have new folks join in - next open house is Thursday the 10th from 7-10pm.

We just accepted our first artist-in-residence for the summer, and have a bunch of fun projects going on like Super Street Fire (live-action Street Fighter with Arduino and pyrotechnics) and a rainbow flame gun:

I've got a few videos from open house nights uploaded here: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL01A5F912A92BD60D&feature=view_all (warning: includes lasers, fire, vacuforming, explosions, and amateur smelting)

When you come by, just ask for Derek and I'll give you the tour.

Techknight, does Site3 offer any "electronics for babbys" style courses, or can you recommend somewhere in the GTA (or Hamilton I guess, since that's where I am now) that would?

Like I don't know a resistor from a capacitor from a tire iron and I can't help but feel it's going put a dent in my plans for robo-domination.

We sometimes have them, but I think the folks who would normally teach it are busy with Super Street Fire. Right now I just see the lathe class and laser training. If you post on the Facebook group that you're interested it might spur something..

hacklab has regular electronics stuff but already did one this month on the 7th.

However, since you're in Hamilton right now, you should stop by your local hackerspace ThinkHaus, who have open nights every Tuesday at 7pm. You could probably learn the basics just hanging out and chatting with some folks.

Though now that I think about it, the local community college might have something in the continuing education section.

The hackathon went very well, you can see tons of pictures at http://www.flickr.com/lvl1/

We had 9 teams show up, totaling 54 hackers, including 18 people who had never been to the space before. There were 6 musical instruments, including the Bloominglabs team, who made 3 instruments and a mixer to drive them all.

We got our kitchen installed just in time, and the spouses of some participants generously volunteered to keep us fed. A local startup donated a keg of beer, and a good time was had by all. It was a very friendly competition, with teams helping each other out and trading parts.

In my opinion, the most impressive project was a group that made a freaking 3D Scanner out of junk parts from the basement:

An old bar code scanner, a webcam, a crappy PC, and a turntable, with an enclosure of pizza boxes did this.

It also makes animated gifs:

Gimme Gimme Swedish Fish...

I just found out that there's (sorta) a hackerspace near me!
They tried to get going last year, but kinda ran out of steam.
I'm currently talking to the guy who tried to start it, and I'm going to get behind the kickstart effort. This area has a lot of talented people, but nothing to keep them here, or get them interested in hacking/building/mechanics.

Any thoughts about how to get some more people interested? Any places other than here on the forums to recruit people?

Start a meetup.com account. We've gotten tons of folks through the door thanks to meetup. Host cool workshops. Before our space opened, we hosted a few Freeduino and TV-B-Gone workshops, which brought in some well-needed cash, and got word out. Do cool stuff, write it up, and submit it to Hackaday, Make and the other blogs. Host an event, and invite the local media.

All of these things have people find us. Unfortunately, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't force it to join a hackerspace: Your best avenues are going to involve simply publicizing the things you're already doing, or doing more publicly accessible things.

I'm pretty sure my brother is your current CTO (or at least heavily involved) - I dropped by a few times in early March while visiting, too.

I've been toying with the idea of starting a hackerspace in my basement when I finish rebuilding the house, but really what will probably happen is I'll turn it into a shop and completely fill it with my own half finished projects. I tend to do that...

edit: anyone know of a hackerspace in the central southern mass or northeastern CT / northwestern RI area? I mostly do my own thing but what the hell, might as well see what's around.

I've been floored by the reception so far. If anyone's within driving distance of Louisville, I encourage you to get a team put together, and drive on up. It'll be a blast.

That's me! The rocket was built as part of a University project, using tools in the space. When the University funding stopped, the lead on that project started a rocketeers group at LVL1. They're working on a pulse jet right now.

Not sure if this belongs here, but I thought I might get some views from interested parties:

I'd like to buy some machine shop time. I have a plate of 6061 aluminum, 24" by 24", that needs some holes and channels milled into it. Unfortunately, the mill at our school has a vise that only opens 18".

So, I'd like to mail you a plate, have you punch some holes in it, and mail it back to me. It would take maybe a hour on a manual mill, as long as you had a vise large enough.

Here's a part drawing. There's a few holes I want to add, but the basic idea is there. Tolerances are not really important, besides things being parallel/perpendicular.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/1786359/Ba...0-%20Sheet1.pdf

Let me know how much you'd charge for such services. It's for a university research project, and I'm paying out of my own pocket, so I can't afford exorbitant prices. I can afford to wait a month.

Email is the best way to contact me - elmoret@ufl dot edu.

Thanks!

You don't actually use a vice for plate metal. Take the vice off the manual mill table, put down some sacrificial plywood and put the plate on that, and use some nut and bolt clamps to secure it to the bed. Thats enough to drill holes/channels. If you want to accurately do stuff to a depth above the surface, thats much more difficult. You then have to mill your sacrificial plywood so its 'flat' wrt the milling head, so that your workpiece is also flat.

Hope that helps, I also hope the teacher at your school has also told you this.

Why does everything STILL smell like pussy?

I work at ALTspace in Seattle. It's about 40% sewing space, 40% individual space, and 20% electronics/metal/wood fab (though that's about to expand a bit). It's an interesting mix of weekend hackers, professional artists, and semi-professional seamstresses, so the turf wars can get to be pretty epic. We're about to have an open house some time in the next week or two, so I'll update in case any of you guys want to come and check it out.

Are they incorporated? As a non-profit? One place I spent time at made some money directly through 'charitable contributions', and a few people had charitable-contribution-matching programs at work, etc. Usually there are fundraising opportunities for non-profits if you know where to look.

Honestly, I have no idea; the incentive isn't there for me to join, I just got to know the people there and show up to open build nights to help out & such. I think I've seen them talking about getting 501 status for almost a year now; the amount of organizations I've seen "working on 501 status" leads to be believe its a quest similar in size to the Fellowship of the Ring or something.

Apparently they are $1500 in the hole to just make ends meet for the upcoming month, so I'm thinking of buying a month or two just to make a little dent.

Sounds like they moved too far too fast. The place I'm thinking off started as a sort of fluid group of like-minded individuals meeting at apartments and the like until they had enough momentum and the paperwork done. If they aren't incorporated, is the lease in an individual's name? The liability issues alone are astounding

Yeah, sounds like they tried to overextend themselves. We didn't sign a lease until we had a self-sustaining membership + 6 months of reserve funds. At that point, we had all the incorporation paperwork and bylaws properly hammered out. Unless you can build in financial sustainability, you're doomed to fail.

We're going to be doing another 24 hour hackathon this weekend. Still slots open if anyone wants to come to Louisville! http://lvl1makefoodnotwar2012.eventbrite.com/
