Niiiiiiiiiiice a new thread! Awesome job with the OP! I just got back from HK on a visa run. I found a great link that describes pretty much everything you'll go through. Its a bit outdated in terms of price (its 1350 HK dollars now) but its covered in the OP. http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shang...great-visa-run/ I think the link would be a great add to the OP! Thanks SB for the new thread! Also: RIP Macho Man Randy Savage

Be Depressive posted:stuff about women Be Depressive is pretty spot on about the dating scene here. Marriages are more like business transactions so don't give up if the woman tells you she has a bf or husband. In my experience, fooling around isn't considered a big deal. In a lot of cases its considered normal and both sides fool around but just don't tell each other about it (duuuur) During parent teacher meetings at my last school, I would have some small talk to warm things up. The moms would always tell me that their husbands go out all night and come home at odd hours in the morning because of “business meetings.” Really? 6 times a week? Comes home piss drunk? He has two phones and you're not allowed to know anything about the second one? You guys have sex a couple times a month? That doesn't raise any red flags? Idk maybe its because I'm an abc and I ask hard hitting questions like “So how's everything at home?” but these women feel like they can tell me everything about their marriage...and they often do... By no means am I saying that you're doing the woman a favor by sleeping with her when her husband is away. Just don't expect the wife to divorce her husband for you! Arakan posted:So last time I went to China it was on a student visa, this time I need a work visa. Apparently I need to get a physical here and send the results to my employer, even though I'm going to have to do the same thing once I get to China for my residency permit. Does this sound right? Also, do any of you actually waste your doctor's time with it or should I just fill it out myself? You're gonna need to get a health check because its one of the requirements to get a Z visa. You're employer should be helping you set all of this up (and pay for it). Certain hospitals handle these kinds of examinations so its not like you can go to any hospital and do it. Its gonna be about 700rmb and the process will take about an hour. You'll get the results in a week. Also you need to bring a few documents with you: 4 passport size photos...and a few other things that escape me at the moment. Again your employer should be handling all of this for you, making the appointments, paying for it, and providing you with the necessary documents.

I wanted to buy some but then my friend told me it was cat.

A warning to those who live or are visiting Shanghai: Nanjing Lu is notorious for pick pockets! Its a popular tourist spot so expect shady people to be following you around for a bit. They work in teams so if you commence a beat down on one of them, don't be surprised if more of them show up. Every foreigner ive met has a story about that area. I'm eagerly waiting for the day one of those guys get caught and gets stomped by a group of big angry dudes

I got a great place that sells knock off clothing! Head to the Silk Market by Nanpu Bridge. Get off the Nanpu Bridge stop (line 4 purple) its right around the corner. That place sells tons of clothes and accessories. I never bought any silk blankets before so I'm not sure about a fair price. I'll ask around. If the dealers keep trying to the jack the price because its "100% silk", don't listen to them! Start extremely low then work your way up. Have you been shopping Chinese style before?

It was kind of nice, actually. Happened to me the last time I went to the club Dubai. Those guys sneak up on you and give you a massage while you piss. Afterwards they expect a tip. Not a good combo in my opinion but it makes for an interesting experience!

As far as Shanghai jobs go, Berlitz is hiring. The pay is crap though. 110 rmb per 45 minute block, part time has no guaranteed hours. 4 days UNPAID training plus a demo and then maybe youre offered a contract. Full time isnt much better so I'd avoid that. If anyone is interested, go for it! I had an interview today and they weren't exactly selling the position. The way I see it, its a good way to get your feet wet until you find something better!

You're experience will depend on how cool your DoS (Director of Studies) is. Some understand that EF is a stepping stone, others take that poo poo super serious and make your life Hell! The pretentious foreigner/arrogant Shanghainese to cool, regular people ratio is higher then anywhere in China but overall its been a good experience for me. Because Shanghai is becoming more international everyday, its easy to get over the culture shock. Sometimes its hard to think that I'm living in China because of the endless amount of expats I run into. I think Shanghai is a good place to get your feet wet before moving onto another part of China. No matter which part you end up being in, chances are there will be a goon there so at least you have a friend! Edit: Chiming in to say that yes, Shanghai is pretty drat expensive!

Give someone the name "Kandy" with a K because thats classy! Strangest name I ever heard was Mikery. At first I was like "you mean Michael?" and the parents corrected me. Not sure if its a real name but whatever. Also Bobo, Tittie, and Boobie are terrible names but Door is funny!

Lovin the banner and the icons added to the front page! I'm a little late for the ESL jobs in China chat but heres my take. I suggest try getting into corporate training. Its really easy and the pay isn't bad. Expect 225 rmb per hour. Many of the students just want to have fun. They work long hours and the last thing they want is an English lesson. Be fun and lively and the class pretty much takes care of itself. Corporate classes are usually 2 hours per lesson. Its a great way to build your resume. If you want to switch English teaching jobs or want to provide English training to a company directly, you can name drop companies you've taught at. The hours are flexible so you'll have free time to pursue other interests. I'm echoing everyone else who said that TEFL isn't necessary but extremely helpful. I'm glad I did it!

Daduzi posted:How do you handle it? I think I've lucked out so far. The attendance is consistent and management from both the English school and the company rarely check in on me. Most classes are filled with people who don't want to be there. Staying after hours or spending your lunch break learning English is the last thing anyone wants to do. Their company pays for the lessons so thats just another reason for them not to care. As long as you keep that in mind, planning classes becomes a a breeze. A lot of students are curious about life outside of China or how expats go about their day in China. Smile, crack a bunch of jokes, and before you know it, its time to go home! I like the job because of the flexible hours. I can concentrate on more important things like learning Chinese and finding a way to become a millionaire.

No talk about Yue Yue? http://www.chinasmack.com/2011/vide...bystanders.html It doesn’t paint a flattering image of the Chinese, although for those of you outside of China or just moved to it, I should mention that most people I know are truly shocked and outraged by this story in the same way they are abroad. The fact remains, the mentality of many here is to not get involved to protect themselves at all costs. I really hope that mind set changes.

SB35 posted:Have been using a VPN through Witopia, and now I'm just getting "connection failed" errors. God dammit loving GFW. Trying to help the girlfriend get into a grad school, I don't have the time or patience for this poo poo. Despite Shanghai being one of the most developed parts of China, it has been rated for having the slowest internet... Not sure if this scam has been shared yet but this a new one I've encountered so please keep eye out for it: It was raining so I decided to take a cab home. We arrive at my apartment and the driver scans my card on his machine, but nothing happens. My card must be dirty, so he takes the card and rubs it on his pant leg – the lower part of his pant leg which is basically under his seat. It’s obvious to me he’s switched my card with one of his cards with no money left on it. I should add, these cards come it various colors, so he must have all the different colors under his seat to be able to switch any card that comes along. I spotted the fake because a student put a sticker on my card back in the day which the driver must have missed. I used what little Chinese I know to tell him to give me back my real card. Of course he was claiming innocence but I managed to get my card back and I got out without paying him. The lesson here is to be vigilant!
