Advice posted:Yeah, they never explained Gaara's control of sand. I guess it just turned out to be his bloodline limit or something? With how often Kishi throws that term around, I'm surprised he never came out and said it. I'd have to guess it's along the lines of a bloodline limit. It seems pretty easy to explain if you stretch the given explanation of bloodline limits slightly in a reasonable direction. Assume that combining two chakra elements is so complicated it's essentially impossible to learn, unless you have some kind of genetic abnormality that causes you to combine them automatically. Then the accepted wisdom would be "Only genetic freaks can combine elements," and nobody except maybe highly-knowledgeable medical ninja would know that it's even a theoretical possibility for other people. Enter Gaara, who's had the one-tail inside him creating sand-element chakra for most of his life. He probably has a fair idea how the stuff works; hence, exception to the rule.

It seems like that's a big part of the parallel they tried to draw between the Orochimaru/Jiraiya and Sasuke/Naruto relationships. Orochimaru was surely intelligent enough to recognize that Jiraiya was a world-class ninja, but I think his ego would prevent him from going far out of his way to obtain Jiraiya's powers for himself.

If there was any possible further way to make these guys less sympathetic and their redemption less predictable then Kishi would have done it. And to do the same with Sasuke he needs to pull out all the stops since it's very predictable from the start (and on top of that you have Naruto constantly saying he intends to redeem him).

It was only after he got his seal adjusted that he became able to properly use chakra. All of his hard work had only middling returns, while Sasuke's moderate effort left him much more skilled than Naruto in every way. In fairness, is there any actual reason to think that Sasuke's effort was "moderate"? You never really see him train but then you never see anyone train except Naruto (because he's the main character) and Lee (because it's the only thing he thinks about). In the one real training arc where he and Naruto are training together he works plenty hard; just not as hard as Naruto because a) he learns the desired lesson without having to, and b) he doesn't actually have the superhuman endurance/chakra necessary to outlast Naruto. Sasuke has literally cared about almost nothing since he was a child except "reviving my clan and killing THAT MAN." What else would he do in his free time but train, play golf? (Realistically you'd expect it to be a 50/50 split between training and chasing women but I guess he never had a family to teach him where clans come from.)

To be fair, IIRC Lee's objective was never to be the world's strongest ninja or even reach the power level of Kages and Jinchurrikis and the other characters who actually matter at this point in the plot. He just wanted to be the world's first ninja who couldn't mold Chakra, and prove that it was actually possible to be competent. He's out there on the battlefield with the other cannon fodder so I guess we got closure on that one. I agree; actually it's really easy to imagine he would just reunite them, make them friendly so they wouldn't go on rampages and then simply set them free to live in peace like the giant frogs and everyone else. But that's rather different from everyone losing their ninja powers, as was originally discussed. Far from being an overworn trope, I literally can't think of anything comparable to the latter in fiction, especially fantasy. Tolkien's Elves leave Middle-earth a bit less magical than it was before, but the Elves still exist elsewhere and also humanity gets an extra little dose of magic from Aragorn and Arwen's Ubermenschen bloodline. (Anyhow that's sort of inevitable to the extent that it's supposed to resemble a mythic history of England). And everyone has to come home from Narnia eventually I think? But that's a stretch too. I think it would make Itachi's whole "Naruto I'm going to leave Sasuke to you" speech look a little strange and out of place. It wasn't really central to the point he'd been making about Naruto's trying to do everything by himself. And plotwise it's not as though anyone actually knew Sasuke was going to show up in the short term, so they didn't really *need* a plan for dealing with him. My point being that there was no plot hole to be sealed by explaining why Itachi doesn't intend to talk to Sasuke himself. That whole page could have been skipped, but it wasn't. Presumably because Kishimoto really wanted to further establish the idea that Naruto is the one responsible for fixing Sasuke.
