Today is new toy day!

CRKT Hissatsu assisted folder. Jesus this thing is huge. I won't say it makes the 710 look small, because they're actually about the same length overall, but the handle is much thicker and grippier and it definitely feels far more substantial in the hand. It's also probably the strongest and fastest spring-assist knife I've ever handled, and it feels solid as a rock with not a trace of blade play. Yes it is technically a tanto, albeit a modified Japanese style rather than American.

Sorry, my camera is literally over 10 years old now and wasn't top of the line even when it was new.

With 710.

It's definitely not designed for general utility but think I'll make it my work knife for the day and see how many looks I can get from coworkers.

I did this with my fullsize AFCK and I got quite a few

Then I went with mini-grip or mini-barrage, no one even notices those!

Looks like he does good work for what I need, and the price isn't bad. I really should get my crap together and give him a call, then post before and after pics. My old deck knife is in pretty awful shape though, I've seriously abused it over the years. Spike/adjustable wrench is new though, and I'm waffling on what multitool I've got lying around to put in it. I'm thinking original Leatherman, though I could go with a Gerber (there pliers are cast and I've had someone snap one of the jaws on me before) or my Wave (I'm thinking the Wave would be over kill).

You want a Benchmade 470. It's my favorite knife ever.

Edit: to expand on this, it it an Axis Assist knife. You can lock the blade closed, or open, basically making a fixed blade. The pocket clip is great, and its S30V. You probably won't get a cool First Production run like mine, but you can be a close second.

Benchmades may be out for the moment. I just went to an LEO-only knife shop and they were charging full MSRP on everything. Whatever the price in the catalog was, that's what was on the knife.

I knew it was designed by him and I forgot which one it was. I thought there was an Onion bigger than a Leek bigger than a Scallion or whatever. I haven't used it in years. (it's a Leek)

The Sharpmaker how-to video is 46 minutes long. Is there a shorter summary?

I disassembled my Scallion last night, not a whole lot of pieces and easy to do. just pay attention and you'll be fine (assuming your model is at least similar to the scallion). I think I'll be cleaning the leek tonight.

Chive, Scallion, Leek, Shallot.

Here's a guy taking a Leek apart: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xiqy7bMNr2w

If you have trouble with the pivot spinning around open the blade and push on it from the side while you unscrew the pivot.

That was my problem. Push on it from which side?

Scott808

Well, I'm right handed and use the screwdriver with my right, so I would hold the knife with my left and use my thumb to push on the blade from the lock side with the sharp edge facing me.

I don't think it matters which side you come from just as long as you apply some lateral pressure while you start unscrewing the pivot.

Last night as I was going to bed I decided to give it another shot and it finally unstuck. Turns out the area with the spring (and some other areas) were rusty as hell. I cleaned off the rust, put some grease in some places, and put it back together (with an issue or two). It now goes from slowly dragging out 30° and me needing to push it the rest of the way to opening fully with a satisfying click.

Now that I've taken apart and repaired my Kershaw knife with a Benchmade toolkit I need to sharpen it with my Spyderco sharpener

A tip I saw in a Field and Stream guide was to use a couple of quarters under the blade to get the correct angle.

That only works if the original edge of the blade was that angle, or possibly if it was more acute than that angle. Unless if you do it at that angle for long enough.

I've never dealt with him personally, but I've never read a bad thing about him on BF. He always seems willing to call anyone to help them out with sharpening on paper wheels.

The only "bad" thing I've noticed is that he almost never shuts up about the paper wheels sharpening method.

I probably should have mentioned that Kershaw threadlocks their screws, so it does take a healthy amount of force to get it going the first time. You may want to reapply threadlocker, or put some teflon tape on the threads to keep the pivot screw from loosening over time.

Teflon tape is best. No mess and no waiting for it to dry.

I generally use teflon tape since it allows you to mess with the pivot tension, plus there's no wait for curing. No messing with cleaning and prepping either.

Right now I just have a bit of clear nail polish acting as ghetto threadlocker on my Drifter. Seems to work well enough.

CRK uses Loctite purple on the Umnumzaan, which is weaker than Loctite blue, which is the most common for people to use. Some people, as seen in the thread below, even use red. Whatever you use, just apply a tiny amount, adjust the tension to where you want it, and let it cure properly before using.

What kind of Loctite?
