Uh...this is sort of uplifting.![]() Frank and Louie is an example of a Janus cat, named for the figure in Roman mythology with two faces on one head. The cat's Massachusetts owner calls the face on the left Frank and the one on the right Louie. (Steven Senne/Associated Press) Twelve years after Marty Stevens of Worcester, Mass., rescued him from being put to sleep because of his condition, the exotic blue-eyed rag doll cat is not only thriving but has made it into the 2012 Guinness Book of World Records (which lists the cat's name as Frank and Louie on its website, while other media are referring to him as Frankenlouie). Story here.

I posted this somewhere in the old cute thread, but there have been some updates, and it's adorable, so I figured it might behoove me to include it here. My mother volunteers at a cat shelter, and quite a while ago, a box of four kittens appeared at their door. My mother often provides a foster home for kittens until they're old enough to be adopted, and so she took them in. Unfortunately, one of the kittens, who they named Paolo, suffered from pectus excavatum, severely displacing his heart and lungs. They didn't have the heart to put him down, so, through donations, they pulled enough money together to have him repaired surgically. The vets loved him so much, they made him special casts over the course of his recovery. Here he is, with my mother: ![]() Here's Paolo looking quite dapper, in preparation for New Year's: ![]() Later in his recovery, in some fancy suspenders: ![]() After making a full recovery, he was adopted by a very nice couple. Here he is, happy and healthy as ever, celebrating his 1st birthday, just a couple weeks ago: ![]() Another volunteer at the shelter worked with a local artist to create a children's book about the whole ordeal, called Paolo's Adventures.

Wormophile posted:A 29 year old woman who was born deaf gets a hearing implant and hears properly for the first time. Right, so she's been deaf since birth and has never heard speech before. So how come when the nurse says 'can you hear me?' she nods? She has her hand over her eyes at that point, so it's not lipreading. I'm confused - how does she know what that means if she's never heard speech before?
