Wait, what?
My dust cover gets HELLA dusty after just a couple of days. Add to that the fact that it's summer and I have a cat, and it's just a dusty hairy mess. Dust covers are good things, and a dust-free turntable is a happy turntable. :3:

So Jeff Mangum just put up a massive new website for Neutral Milk Hotel, including news that a new vinyl boxset is coming out in November, containing everything they've ever released (On Avery Island, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Everything Is) three seven inches (one with Holland, 1945 b/w engine, one with two unreleased tracks, one with two versions of the track Little Bird) a 10 inch with 8 unreleased tracks and two posters.

The website is here, http://www.walkingwallofwords.com/releases.html and also contains a stream with two of the unreleased tracks (Oh Sister/Ferris Wheel on Fire).

e: in my excitement I totally messed up what was actually in the boxset, fixed that.

Holy poo poo, instant purchase is right. This is so exciting, and I'm so glad I just happened to have some extra cash. :)

Edit: vvv Agreed on the Blu-Ray SW set. The "special edition" films have so much terrible poo poo added that it really does make them worse films. It's really sad because the original original trilogy is fantastic.

I have the Music Hall USB-1 and I think it's great. It's my first table, and I bought it because it seemed like a good value for my budget at the time. Looking back, I have no real need for a USB connection, as every new vinyl I've bought comes with a download code, and any of the older vinyl I have, I either already have a digital version, or I don't want one. If I had known that before I bought it, I might have gone for a different one. Still, it's a really nice table for the money, in my n00b opinion.

I picked up the new Black Keys 12" single earlier today. It's got a pretty interesting gimmick. The record plays backwards. The recording isn't backwards, but you put the stylus on the runout groove and it plays from there instead of the other way around like usual. Has anyone released a record like that before?

I read something about this recently. I think a lot of older classical recordings were done this way to reduce distortion as the music got louder toward the end. Something to do with the number of rotations increasing as the needle gets closer to the center of the disc.

Something to do with the feet would be my guess as well, but it's also very likely that it's just some random spring that has nothing to do with anything. I have two turntables and neither of them have any springs anywhere.

Cpt. Spring Types
Feb 19, 2004

Wait, what?
All this talk about feet led me to Needle Doctor to check out some stabilization pads. I was shocked to see that some of them get up to $1500, but then I started browsing their shop a bit more, and came across this cartridge. :stare: $15,000. I can't imagine even being able to hear well enough to justify spending that much on a single component. Craaazy.

Then again, they also have a turntable that's nearly $200,000, so I guess if you're going for that kind of eccentricity, you may as well throw in a 15 grand cartridge. Chump change.

Has anyone here ever listened to a record on equipment that outrageously expensive? If so, what's it like? :allears:

Cpt. Spring Types
Feb 19, 2004

Wait, what?
Exactly. I haven't spent much at all on my setup and it sounds loving amazing. The only time I've had an issue with the sound has been from the vinyl being staticy or dirty. There has to be a point when the record itself is not creating a perfect sound, even if the equipment is.

I now have an image in my mind of someone in a clean-room with advanced air filtration, humidity control, sound dampening, etc., wearing an anti-static suit and gloves, handling records like they're loving uranium and enjoying pure audio bliss for like 10-15 minutes at a time before having to carefully flip the record over, making sure the earth's rotation and gravity haven't thrown off the syncing of the turntable, and so forth. :)

vvv That's downright reasonable compared to this.

On a totally different note, an indie label called Joyful Noise Recordings (they put out weird novelty items like oF Montreal and Dinosaur Jr. cassettes) is doing a record of the month club where they'll issue flexi discs with songs exclusive to each release. Every disc is limited to 500. Truth be told I've not heard of half the bands on the list, but it's only $5.75 (shipped) a month so I figured why not. If you pay an extra 20 bucks for the first month, they send you a special hand numbered and decorated wooden box to hold the discs. I figured the folks here would be interested to know this because it's a pretty unique offer and a few of the bands on the list for these singles get name dropped here now and again.

But seriously, I seem to have an inordinate amount of records that don't have an endless groove at the end to stop the stylus from running over the label, so I tend to be pretty quick to get up and lift the arm before it does. It really would be nice to have an auto-return on my table. I have a TT with a linear arm that does everything auto, but it's missing parts.

I think part of the problem is also that record companies want to sell an image more than they want to sell music. Take a look at Kings of Leon. When they first started out, they were these kinda scraggly looking country dudes making gritty, original, upbeat southern rock. Once they switched to a major label, they become these stylish pretty boys and now all of their music sounds exactly the same, and may as well be Coldplay or something.

Lana Del Rey is another good example. No one had heard of her last summer when her first single was released, and almost immediately afterward, she's featured on magazine covers, getting her two songs played constantly, music videos, the whole shebang. She was even on SNL this weekend, despite not even having an album out yet. Because her music isn't what's for sale, her look and style are. If you saw her SNL performance, you know that's pretty much all she has going for her outside of the studio.

Still, even with all the manufactured garbage out there, there are plenty of artists who make really quality albums consistently. :)

The reason you don't hear much about extension cords for turntable leads is because the turntable-amplifier connection is extremely susceptible to the introduction of noises and should be kept as short as possible. The signal along this run is really really weak and it massively amplified at the receiver. Any introduced noise on this section is also greatly amplified. If you really must do it you will also need to run a ground wire. Any small gauge wire should do the trick.

I think this is happening to me, even though my cords are all pretty short. I've been noticing that when I have my receiver on the Phono setting, it's picking up radio signals. It's faint, but enough that I can hear it in the silence between tracks or when I don't have something loud playing. Would adding a ground wire get rid of this?

I don't know about a trend, but it's kind of a quirky fun thing. I haven't had any issues playing mine without a coin, and the sound quality is acceptable. I think the biggest issue for me is static, as I'm in a dry environment and it builds up super easy on thin plastic like that.
