They were a precursor to surround sound. I'm not entirely sure, but I think they never really took off. Probably because it required you to have four speakers at a time when people generally didn't. I've never actually listened to one so I can't tell you how they sound. I haven't really come across them too often so it's a cool thing to find at the very least.

You also needed a quad decoder receiver and generally a higher end cartridge to extract de-matrixing or subcarrier signals. There were several competing formats of varying quality both discrete and matrixed. Also the discrete records tended to wear out the subcarrier signal quite quickly.

Also, found a record shop tonight I never knew about while I was wandering between pubs. It's about the size of a shoebox, but i'll check it out tomorrow!

It's funny you should mention this, because many of the ex radio records I bought had big yellow china-graph x's over the tracks the producers didn't want the DJ to play. They came off easy enough, but I kept a couple for radio nostalgia. On singles, they went as far as to actually rip the label off the B side.

It takes aaagggeeess to add your collection to Discogs, but it is easier than an excel spreadsheet provided they have the records in their database. Even with the entered collection this small, I have a TextEdit list full of others that aren't there yet. The collection so far is very dadrockish because it's the ones I keep at my girlfriends house where I live. Once I go home to tackle the 2000+ collection it will look more impressive. Yeah, those zip lock bags for record jackets. Press all the air out, seal 'em up, and nothing gets in. They are pretty affordable too, even for thousands.

If you meant getting it off, bare minimum a wipe with a lintless rag and a carbon brush before each play.

I was visiting my grandfather today and went to the neighbours to fix their DVR. They had a box of records on the counter and said they were giving the whole box to a charity store. I said i'd take the whole box off their hands (I could offload the stuff I didn't want to a friend who collects crappy crap). Well they ummed and arred and took some out. You will unfortunately also need a special cartridge to play this one back. Edison cut discs that used an up and down (hill and dale) motion rather than side to side modulation.

And then a bunch of old school jingles. These I have no idea about, they all have very short play time and look like they would play fine. 3 from Rockhill Recording in NYC, and one b&c recording.
10" 78rpm "Facsimile of 1-minute Lincoln-Mercury commercial on WCBS, New York"
12" 78rpm "Weather Jingles with 7 cuts for Snow/Rain/Fair/Cloudy/Cold/Heat"
12" 33rpm(shellac) " Budweiser Box Score"
10" 78rpm(b&c label) "Football Jingles 3 cuts" (there is WCBS 7/9/53 scratched out on the bottom of the label)

These are incredibly rare, and should be transferred to another medium for posterity, and the originals stored properly. Most of this stuff was junked when it was no longer needed.

If you have 50+ in one of those and try to go straight for the back ones and they are leaning back there's a hell of a lot of weight there. At some stores I can see them visibly sagging at the end of the row if they aren't flat against the back of the rack. It's alright if you have like 10 I guess. I'm not saying it's as bad as stacking them 6 feet high on the ground, but a visible sag can't be good, right?
