Whoops, I guess today didn't afford me as much Morrowind time as I thought it would. I'll be gone tomorrow and won't be back until Saturday night, so expect an update sometime Sunday. On the bright side, here's a vote! Should Wizard Lizard...

Do the main quest like the government says?
Further his study with the Mages' Guild?
See what the Fighters' Guild has for him to kill?
Investigate profitable opportunities with the Thieves' Guild?
Wander Vvardenfell and check out whatever the hell catches his fancy?
All votes must include your choice's corresponding smiley or it doesn't count.

FAKE EDIT: I did manage to get the Ice Pick made properly. It's pretty rad!

I'm simultaneously anticipating and dreading Lizard Wizard's adventures if you guys vote this way. Allow me to show off the spells I made today.

One thing I was scratching my head about was how to get better spells that would be worth the upgrade. This improved fireball concoction costs 22 magicka mana to cast. I could pop off four regular fireballs for that price, and it'd be more damaging, too! So, I fiddled around with it a bit, and ultimately got this:

This delivers 6 frost damage per second for 5 seconds, giving us 30 damage! Apparently damage-over-time is way more mana-efficient. Also, I found today that not all elements are created equal; fire spells use up the least, shock spells use the most, and frost spells are in-between. Does anyone have any idea why that is? I'm guessing it has something to do with more things being weak to shock or frost than fire, but I'm genuinely curious!

I know everyone's going to vote to wander, but advance in the Mages Guild and you'll get to wander with a goal!

Also, this is an assumption, but I believe the costs are to do with spell resistances. Fire resistance is a dime a dozen in Vvardenfell, with plenty of Dunmer around. Lots of Nords around for frost resistance too. Then there's shock which isn't really resisted well by anything.

This thread is making me want to pick Morrowind back up. I never really got into it because I sucked at the combat and didn't ever quite make it outside of Seyda Neen, but reading this makes it seem like a lot of fun.

Damage over time is always more efficient for the simple reason that it takes time to have effect: in those 5 seconds the other guy might have been able to dispel the damage (never saw that happen) or damage you. So that's probably the logic behind it.
About elements, it should be like you say: after all, if you think about it, a lot of things have innate resistance to fire (like 3/4th the population of Vvardenfell), while less enemies are resistant to shock (although some of the more powerful critters are).
Too bad there's no Sonic damage. Nothing is resistant to sonic damage, except in splatbooks.

Also, you can't exactly spam Damage over Time magic. If you fire off three 30-damage fireballs, you've done ninety damage. But if you fire off three 3 dps for 10 seconds apiece burns, it will still take a full half of a minute for that dude to take 90 damage. (I think, it's been a while since I've tinkered around with DoT stuff.)

Such comfortable, magical pants!

My first time was a Dunmer Sorcerer with a starsign like The Tower or something useless without +magicka. So essentially I was melee with some cantrips.

I also got a lot of use out of that Daedric dagger with soulsteal that the Balmora Mages Guild leader gives you and The Staff of Magnus. I'm really not sure how I managed to kill anything that playthrough, but I managed for a while and it was terrifying.

..oddly enough, that character's playtime ended when I was in a horribly annoying fight and quicksaved.. only to die unavoidably a second later. And I hadn't autosaved in ages. And I didn't make any manual saves. So, don't do this gravyflood.

Okay. Besides, I'm pretty sure Lizard Wizard's refusal to use silt striders already constitutes wandering. Voting's closed! But on a more serious note, we've been ducking the main questline. So I'm putting my foot down and letting you all know that we're going to be taking a shot at story stuff at Level 15.

Wander Lizard Mage Mage!

So, that orc mage I told you about? She wants a specific dunmer's skull for her freaky dark magic hobbies. Look, you don't need to see the inside of this tomb. It sucks. Like every other tomb.

Turns out the Nerevarine is some reincarnated dunmer who's gonna do cool things and fart happiness for the dunmer race. Big deal. While I'm here, I decide to make a few spells, a damage-over-time of each element, and an awesome ice dagger. They both work very, very well.

Ranis wants us to shut down some unauthorized restoration trainer at the local tavern.

Who happens to be a well-dressed Lizard Brother. We just tell him to train more quietly. That ol' stodgy guild official doesn't need to know.

We also bump into a Thieves' Guild recruiter. I'll join you, lady, but don't tell me how you got your nickname.

Lessee what else we got here. Maar Gan? That sounds exotic. Off we go, apparently!

My new spells kick so much rear end that the cliff racers are afraid to come peck my eyes out.

Pretty soon we come across this daedric shrine. It's pretty cool, I guess.

OH GOD FIRE GUY KILL IT.

OH GOD POWER RANGERS VILLAIN.

DINOSAURS

It wouldn't be wandering if we didn't check out at least one tomb!

Not just skeletons, but ghost skeletons. And bonemeal.

Hello, innocent travelers!

Goodbye, innocent travelers!

Not far from these guys was a suspicious cave. What's the fuzz doing here?

Oh, I see. It's a mine.

I calmly walk away with a small fortune in imperial glass.

Speaking of cool caves, I found this one not too far away. One of these crates had a dwarven spear, so I left behind some of my more useless gear for that.

This is fun! The Ashlands aren't such a bad

AAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!

Goddrat. Finally we reach this daedric shrine by the coast.

Unfortunately, this Power Rangers villain jumps me. And he's, like, third season, at least.

I make liberal use of my friends, and take his heart.

I really need to rest after that. There's a nearby island that looks pretty good for that.

Maar Gan is mostly north, and slightly west, of Ald'ruhn. Not sure exactly where you are now. If the Daedric ruin you're near is Ashalmawia you're going to need to go east and somewhat south.

If you want the short answer, check out this map:
