No, probably our 5th. We're looking for decent rates though for her birthday weekend. We have some points on our players cards and we can use our points on a room through MGM but we're trying to see if we can score something for the whole trip (8 of us).

So I'm looking around for something to do on a Sunday during the day, and it looks like ATV tours look pretty cool. Any recommendations on ATV tours?

This seemed like a popular option:

It's an ATV tour around the Valley of Fire and Lake Mead for about ~$160/person. Any better deals to be had or any experiences with this company?

I'll be in Vegas next month, and I'm planning to visit some off-Strip casinos (specifically Sam's Town, Green Valley Ranch, the Stations, and Orleans). I'd rather not deal with the headache of renting a car, so is it possible/recommended to take the bus to all these places? Or would I be stuck paying out the rear end for cab fare?

Those casinos are pretty spread out, you'd spend more of your trip on the bus or more of your money on cabs than anywhere else. I think a rental car would be worth the investment if you're set on seeing all of those places

Especially if you're doing every Station casino. The drive from Aliante to Sunset to Red Rock to Boulder would bankrupt you. Don't get me wrong - I love Station casinos and do 99% of my gaming there, but they're for locals who drive themselves there. Not the tourists getting there from the strip.

I just checked a fare estimator, and ouch. Maybe I'll rent a car after all. Thanks for the advice.

What's everyone's strategy for getting good hotel rates on the strip? Call directly? Wait for a web promo? Join a players club?

I would hotline/priceline it, but we need 2 beds. I know those guys don't guarantee room type.

We're going on a busy weekend (March 15-18), so I know there won't be a whole lot of bargains out there. Just trying to stay on the strip at a non-shithole for about $300-400 for the weekend.

Booking directly is the cheapest way almost always, while getting to choose your room. Travel sites will sometimes have lower rates at properties but you will have less choice. The players club discounts is the best way though, assuming you book directly through the hotels website with your discount.

So, are you a members of any players clubs/rewards cards? If not, some allow on-line signup. I constantly get offers from MGM properties and lately Stratosphere has sent me tons since my last trip in October.

And a no-shithole for that price should be no problem on the strip. How many people are going?

edit: Also, the players club (email offers in general) not only give great rates but also free or discounted food and shows.

For example, I just checked and received an offer from Stratosphere for $32/night, free tickets to a show on property, 2-for-1 tickets to Bite (their tittie show with vampires :stare:), free tower admission (which all hotel guests get), and buffet discounts. It is not on the strip but just showing you that signing up and receiving offers is a great deal.

I always check here too along with promo emails from casinos: http://smartervegas.com/

Click the hotel you're interested in on the left or add a date and they have an aggregation of promo codes you can use. You click book on their page and it directs you to the hotel's page with a promo code.

Example: they have a promo code on there for Stratosphere for $23 a night. :)

There's a bunch of other options, but I've only ever used it for hotels and a couple shows (50% off bluemangroup tickets I think way back)

When booking a hotel, make sure to check (either on the travel site or elsewhere on the net) for resort fees. There are plenty of places that seem like they're a good deal, then you get stuck with a $15/night fee for the amenities.

If you're a skilled negotiator, a frequent visitor with a high enough theoretical win, or tip the front desk staff well you can get the resort fees waived. Just ask.

Ah cool, good thing I found this thread on time as I'm heading to Vegas in about a week (getting there on wednesday the 8th 11am, leaving saturday the 11th 1:30pm).

I'm pretty much tagging along with my cousin since he has a conference there and I'm getting a free room. Sadly, I'll be on my own during the day.

We'll be staying at Caesar's Palace.

While I'm not much of a gambler (I've been to the Montreal Casino maybe 5 times) I do love me some no limit holdem poker.

Any cheap tournaments of note? Or low stakes tables?

Also, any good attractions around the Palace?

Really out there question: I'm OBSESSED with the book and movie "Casino" are there any tours based on it?

There are low stakes tables all over the place, especially off the strip. The Tropicana tournament - if it runs (they may or may not have enough people signed up) - is a good cheap tournament. The Luxor game is usually decent as well.

Everything, really. Actually the Forum Shops at Caeser's is my favorite place to people-watch in Vegas.

Fuck the DH
Luxor has horrible rooms no matter what the quality of the water is. This is the kind of thing that happens one time because if it happened repeatedly the hotel would shut down.

Also, it speaks more of incompetence on the part of the health department, who had taken positive samples previously through late 2011 but repeatedly spoiled their samples and thus never told the press until they did it a third or so time and finally got a pure positive sample. Of course by that point someone (who was probably either very young or very elderly) died from the infection.

Which is par for the course. "Southern Nevada Government" is a total comedy sideshow that serves as a crash course on how to be as corrupt and incompetent as humanly possible. Third world nations could consider our public servants and services a model for hosed-uppedness.

Just avoid being on the far north strip at night alone, way up by Stratosphere and all the way to the outskirts of downtown. The middle and south strip (normal people stay around here) is safe at all time of the day. Avoid getting arrested. Avoid timeshare people, they are everywhere. If someone is selling things on the sidewalk/giving out hooker cards don;t make eye contact at all. Just walk.

Most hotels will let you leave your bags with the bell desk if you tell them you're a guest and waiting for family to arrive. That shouldn't be a problem.

There are a ton of ranges around Vegas for shooting. There are even a few that let you do fully automatic weapons. I would just Google gun ranges in Vegas, price shop, and see which place looks the most interesting. Or, stop by the TFR forum and see if a local is willing to take you out. I'd volunteer but I have to mooch off my buddies as it is.

The Gun Store is the most well known. Firing ranges aren't cheap though.

It's probably been said before but if you decide to go, then try and get there when it opens. We went to the Gun Store one afternoon and got told it was a 2-3 hour wait in a queue. We went back the next morning and had a 10 minute wait (we got there about 15 minutes after opening)

Does anyone know which buffets have king crab legs for dinner? A couple years ago it was a given that the higher end buffets would have them but lately it seems like even they've just been serving the snow crab.

The Bellagio Buffet has them chilled. The Wynn as well (steamed too?). In fact, I hadn't seen much about the various good buffets and since I'm now work-commuting to Vegas 3 weeks out of the month I've been trying to hit them all to find out for myself. Soooooo I thought I'd write a review of sorts, maybe it'll help somebody here out:

The Cream of the Buffet Crop

The first three below are far and away the best for me. If you're going to try a Vegas buffet, you probably won't be disappointed with any of these choices. All of my trips were for dinner service (not brunch or lunch).

Wicked Spoon at The Cosmopolitan - The best. Gourmet dishes, I paid $37 without a players card, definitely worth the money. Highlights: bone marrow, bourbon creamed corn with bacon and caramelized onion, rack of lamb, truffle potato gratin, spaghetti and veal meatballs, cajun shrimp with cheese, shepards pie, tons of others including the usual buffet staples (prime rib, crab legs, tons of great desserts). Plus they have copious amounts of chocolate-covered strawberries and awesome gelato.

The Buffet at Bellagio - Entry was something like $40 with an M-Life card. Lots of really good pastas (shells in blue cheese sauce, ravioli in wild mushroom sherry sauce with asparagus), their red curry chicken was really good, maple seared salmon, braised Wahoo, ribs, kobe beef, the usual staples (prime rib, aforementioned king crab legs, tons of great desserts). I sat at the bar and the bartender was hilarious to talk to.

The Buffet at Wynn - Entry is around $40. More selection than Bellagio, probably a bit better in quality too. The place is beautiful too. The lobster cannelloni is tremendous. Several Indian dishes I can't recite and good seafood. Also the usual staples (prime rib, crab legs, tons of great desserts).

Still Pretty drat Good

These next few places are still worth the money, but their quality just isn't at the same level as The Big 3 above. Every buffet does something well and these are no exception.

Spice Market at Planet Hollywood - Entry is around $28 which is a good value. There are tons of choices -- one of the bigger buffets, pretty good quality too. Lots of seafood choices (several fried ones too). There are several ethnic stations including Indian, Chinese, and Mexican. The lamb kabobs were good. All the usual staples (prime rib, crab legs, tons of great desserts). They even have cotton candy for dessert. Hell yeah. Also check out the various food-themed movie posters (some real, some fake) on the walls surrounding the place. Very cool.

Le Village Buffet at Paris - Entry is around $35. The serving stations are in cottages representing different regions of France, very cool effect. Actually, the whole Paris Hotel is cool. The waitresses wear uniquely french outfits which adds to the effect. Plus you can get this cool balloon souvenir margarita mug for like $13 if you're into that sort of thing. The food is more adventurous than Planet Hollywood - plus they have a crepe station. My favorites: Shells in brie sauce with bacon, roasted duck at the carving station, and the fajita/pita station. They have the usual staples too (prime rib, crab legs, tons of great desserts).

Carnival World Buffet at Rio - Entry is around $35. This is probably the biggest buffet on the strip so there's lots to choose from. There isn't a lot of adventure in the dishes compared to Paris or The Cosmopolitan, but there's bound to be a few things you will like. You're getting a lot of options for the price. Highlights: chicken parmesan, beef and pork ribs, chicken flautas, clams in garlic sauce. Of course they have the usual staples (prime rib, crab legs, tons of great desserts).

The "Meh" Category

Not much stands out from these places. If you're in a hurry and can't go somewhere nicer then you'll probably still be satisfied.

Cravings at Mirage - Entry is something like $32. The pork enchiladas (and guacamole) were decent -- this coming from a Texan. Lots of sushi choices, and good seafood and chicken teriyaki. Not as good as Paris or Planet Hollywood but still not terrible.

More, The Buffet at Luxor - I ate there like 2 years ago so this may be jaded. I don't remember much good other than the prime rib.

Other Places Worth A Look

The places below I've either not been to (and have heard good things) or are otherwise unique in some way.

Village Seafood Buffet at Rio - Entry is a whopping $50 ($45 with Total Rewards card) because you're paying a premium for the unlimited steamed lobster tail, crab legs, sushi, more crab legs, fried fish, baked fish, steamed fish, more crab legs, fried scallops, muscles, oysters, clams, shrimp, more crab legs, and the usual buffet staples (prime rib, more crab legs, tons of great desserts). The quality of the seafood is still only buffet-quality but it's worth going their once to try for yourself. The glaring flaw here though is no king crab legs (but they have every other kind).

Bayside Buffet at Mandalay Bay - Haven't been there (yet) but have heard good things.

Studio B Buffet at M Resort - Haven't been there (yet) but have heard REALLY good things. This place is way south of the strip so it's harder to get to.

Simon Says Brunch at Simon in the Palms Place - My coworkers who live in Vegas swear by this. It's a Sunday-only brunch (haven't made it there yet) but they say it's the best.

The Buffet of Buffets Pass - This is a GREAT deal if you're planning on doing more than 1 buffet in a 24-hour period. You get unlimited buffet trips to any of the Caesar's family hotels (Paris, Planet Hollywood, Rio, Bally's, etc) for $45. The clock starts based on the time of your first receipt. Some hotels will comp this deal as a coupon, or throw it in with your room rate package.

Here Be Dragons (Places To Avoid)

This list could go on forever, but I'm listing places that might otherwise seem good because they're in a nice hotel but are really underwhelming.

Lago Buffet at Caesar's Palace - For being in such a great hotel, this place was such a disappointment. Apparently it's now closed for renovations so Caesar's clearly agrees. There's hope yet!

Grand Buffet at MGM Grand - It was just so underwhelming. The MGM Grand is an awesome hotel. It deserves a better buffet!

Circus Buffet at Circus Circus - I only put this here because of how terrible it is. If you're anywhere near this place it's because you either 1) Brought your kids to Vegas, 2) Got a good rate on a room (you shouldn't be spending more than a few hours in each night anyways), or 3) Got lost in the desert. It's worth paying the cab fair to get back to some place nice like Paris just to avoid.

Fuck the DH
I would not rate Wicked Spoon that highly, having done it for both dinner and brunch. If you do go, go for dinner, because the brunch is overpriced by any other buffet's standard of either breakfast nor lunch and neither is very thorough.

I go to Strip buffets for either breakfast or lunch about once a month, and I usually go for either Bellagio (good but can have long lines) or Aria (much shorter line, food almost as good as Bellagio, service started out bad but has seriously improved in the past year.) Planet Hollywood is spectacular food in a bad location.

South end, Mandalay Bay, period, no questions asked. Luxor has always been horrid service, Excalibur's is designed poorly so to discourage repeat trips to the food, MGM's food isn't good.

North end, forget buffets and just go to the Peppermill where the portions are enormous. Really, as bad as Circus Circus is on buffets (I haven't tried it, but I almost did once), the rest of their food isn't bad. I once had a dinner platter at their Garden Grill dinner-only cafe back near the AdventureDome about four years ago and it was great food for the price. Lots of turkey, big mashed potato, corn on the cob, etc. I can only assume it was such a value because people slam Circus Circus for food so much that they can't attract customers.
