Your files are encrypted/decrypted on their servers which means they have read access to all your plaintext stuff. Recently, someone has filed an FTC complaint against them for misleading users about the security. More recently, Dropbox had a "glitch" lasting 4 hours during which time anybody could access your entire account without a password. That was the final kick in the rear end I needed to switch to SpiderOak. This is not for Grandma. It's more advanced and takes some setup to get working how you want. The best part though is that the encryption keys are kept on your local machine(s) so SpiderOak staff cannot look at the content of your files at all. There are clients for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and several flavors of Linux. Like Dropbox, it comes with 2gb for free by default. Also like Dropbox, you get extra free space for referrals, but at a rate of 1gb each. You can pay for more space in increments of 100gb for $10/mo or $100/yr. Some of us started a referral chain in the Dropbox thread but I think it's best to start a new one for SpiderOak. BUT WAIT, there's more! Forums poster iluvpr0n mentioned promo code WORLDBACKUPDAY which will start you off with 6gb of free space if you sign up under a referral link (you BOTH get an extra gig). If I only have 1GB of data I want backed up, I can store that for 30 cents/month with Tarsnap. Plus, with SpiderOak, the server effectively requires you to send it the equivalent of a 16385-round pbkdf2 of your password, which they could use to decrypt your data's keys. Which is not all that many rounds these days. So pick a good password.

I've been championing SO since page two of the dropbox thread. I started using dropbox and spideroak at about the same time, but stopped using DB after a week or so, spideroak worked much better for me. I'm up to about 13Gb off of referrals so far, so I'll stay out of the chain now. Although you can get referrals all the way up to a 50Gb limit which is a drat good deal in my book. The syncing aspect works as well as all the other syncing systems I've tried, and the deduplication currently has my data at about a fifth of its actual size. I'm hoping for some improvements to the share room system, and/or cross user folder sharing like dropbox offers. They say they're looking into it but have the zero knowledge to factor in to it, that makes things more difficult.
