Holy gently caress. Uploaded 5Gb yesterday, emptied the dir on the local machine (data exists on other drive too), started the client this morning, does its autoscan (can't turn that off, right?), everything on SpiderOak's side is now in the Garbage. OK, it's there, but it means one careless --purge-historical-versions and it's toast, no?

Sounds like it's working exactly as intended.

pro-tip: don't delete your files and then purge the backups if you want to keep your files.

Yeah, that was a stupid thing to do. It wasn't entirely clear (to me) in the online manual. Thought it would only delete older versions like the command says. Had the impression that local operations didn't affect the remote dir. It clearly says it's a backup tool though, so it's my fault for treating it like regular online storage.

Not sure what you're aim is BUT if you want to roll your own or pay a little, Crashplan is excellent. You can set it to NEVER delete old/deleted versions. I also don't recommend relying on any one service or method for backup. For me, SpiderOak is a way to synchronize and back up all my often-accessed files -- school stuff mainly. I have always-updated copies of every file on all my devices and a nice backup, but then I have other backup methods/services as well (Crashplan is one).

If I'm understanding you right, for it work as you want it; 1; select folder for backup 2; wait for upload to complete 3; unselect folder for backup 4; delete local files If you leave the folder selected, SO will mirror whatever you do to in that folder. If you unselect it, the backup will stay as is until you delete from within the SO client. Although I dont know how often a "careless --purge-historical-versions" would happen? Think I'll use SpiderOak just for sync'ing then, and Dropbox for collaboration with other people. MeKeV posted:If I'm understanding you right, for it work as you want it; drat, you're right. I missed step 3. I'm on Linux and have symlinks to commandline SpiderOak; one for regular, one with the purge options. I'm pretty disciplined, but ya never know. In case anyone is mega paranoid and using this to sync TrueCrypt volumes, it looks like you have to turn off Timestamp preservation in TrueCrypt (which is on by default) to get it to see that a TC container has changed. (Dropbox would see that either the file changed or it was opened and closed) In TC go to Settings->Preferences and UNCHECK "Preserve Modification Timestamp of File Containers"
