Missed watching it with the thread, but first couple new episodes were good. I liked the first more than the second.

Looking through the thread, guess I'm in the minority on that one.

That was a pretty good episode. Last half was much stronger than the first, and I loved the ending "Executive Producers" gag.

Figured I'd be the first to say that Maurice Lamarche was dead-on: "The Late Philip J. Fry" is up for a 2011 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program! ... and its competition is The Cleveland Show, Robot Chicken, The Simpsons and South Park.

If Futurama loses, we riot.

Kind of surprised to see all the backlash this episode has gotten. It was definitely a lower-tier episode, but I think Attack of the Killer App and That Darn Katz were both worse. Honestly, it was about on-par with other Leela-centric pure comedy episodes, like A Leela of Her Own. Which, although I don't mind it, I know many consider one of the worst episodes of the series, so what do I know? VV

Yeah, like I said, I like the episode well enough, I just know that some people consider it one of the weakest. I'm one of those people who will say there's no really outright bad episode in the entire series. There's weaker ones, definitely, but it's never been unwatchable for me.

Well, Attack of the Killer App came pretty close to being unwatchable. But it had some good gags still.

Leela also looked like she was animated way off model in the first few minutes. Her face was all weird.

That's been happening a lot this season. I first really noticed Hermes' looked off in quite a few shots of Lethal Inspection.

Parasites Lost, Where no fan has gone before, Roswell that ends well, The Farnsworth Paradox, The Late Philip J. Fry and the Prisoner of Benda are all based on sci-fi ideas and are all great. Coincidence?

Also note that these episodes focus more on Planet Express, in part or in whole, as a group. Character-specific episodes are fine, but it feels like there's been a lot more of those this season than necessary. In particular, Bender is feeling a bit overused.

Not sure if anyone else finds this interesting but me, but this most recent episode was written by Eric Horsted, who's been with the show since the beginning and was the head writer on great episodes like A Flight to Remember, A Taste of Freedom and War is the H-Word (which is one of my overall favorites in the entire series). It's kinda weird how quality between episodes can vary so much, but I guess everyone has off days.

If time passes in the Futurama universe (so it's now 3011) why are all the orphans still the same age as they were in 3002 or whenever?

Jack of Hearts posted:

While the years change, time passes much more slowly in Futurama as an unintended consequence of the decision to change the speed of light in 2208. That's why Fry still appears to be a twentysomething slacker even though he should be approaching forty by now.

The Simpsons, South Park and other shows all do the same thing. I know Futurama generally uses more continuity than those, but it's still the same kind of deal.

Cardboard Box

It stands out even more when they bring up random bits of continuity out of nowhere (like Hermes' "uh oh, it's another one of Fry's dogs!" line from A Clockwork Origin). I'm not as much of a continuity stickler as some people, and I'm in the camp that believes not-as-good Futurama is still better than no Futurama, but a little bit of cohesion between episodes would be nice.

I've enjoyed the episodes this season more often than not. I'd say that Lethal Inspection, The Late Philip J. Fry, The Prisoner of Benda and The Silence of the Clamps were about as good as the very best of the original run. Sure, there's been a couple stinkers, but taking into consideration that it's been getting its footing back after a very long absence from TV, it's pretty impressive how many good episodes we've had. It's probably been the weakest overall season in the entire series, but it's a far cry from the revival of Family Guy.

Yeah, the EyePhone episode is my least favorite in the entire series, but even then, it created one of my favorite new running jokes in the series, with Fry calling out "Help! Police!" when he's in trouble. That just tickles me.

Just got around to watching it, that was a fantastic episode. Easily one of the best of the season. I agree with the sentiment someone said earlier, about the episode wasting a bit too much time at the beginning, but all-in-all it was really funny, smart and well-done. More than makes up for the shortcomings of Yo Leela Leela.

On the other hand almost every episode in this half season has had one and none of them have really been that funny.

What about "I've smoked a lot of paper in my day" from Lethal Inspection? I liked that one.

I do agree that they're doing the weed jokes a bit too often. And using Scruffy a little too much.

Late to the party, but I actually liked the recent episode a fair bit. It's probably one of my favorites of the overall season. I'm a bit bothered by the lack of consistency with Fry and Leela, but I can overlook that for what was by and large a funny, well-written episode.

Also "so are walnuts, and they're delicious!" is one of my new favorite lines in the entire series.

Still won't challenge Jurassic Bark, but I thought this episode was great. Liked it better than the space whale ep, that's for sure.

I actually thought they were going to end the episode right at Zoidberg standing there alone. I'm so glad they didn't.

Also, on the whole first names thing... I thought it was established at one point that Turunga is actually her last name, and the mutants use the whole surname first kinda deal, like some Eastern cultures. I mean come on, even her parents call her Leela. I don't think it was explained in an episode, but in a commentary.

I can't believe they did the Leela boning Zapp thing. The iPhone/Twitter parody one was just painful, as well as the Amy/Bender Robosexual one. Big WTF at the incredible out-of-character moment for Bender and just awful stereotypes/Family Guy-esque jokes. That's the first time I just..couldn't make it through a Futurama episode. There are tons of pages so I didn't want to encounter spoilers for any future episodes.

Please, goons! Let me know it gets better from here!

The episodes pick up right after that last one you mentioned, for the most part. There's still a couple weakish ones (like That Darn Katz and the Holiday Spectacular) but by and large most of them are enjoyable, and a few of them are great.
