So, I know Barkerchat isn't really SciFi but holy hell was Imajica a great book.

Definitely unseats The Great And Secret Show as my favorite of his.

Is Ubik a good PKD to start with having never read him?

A good place to start is the short story "We can remember it for you wholesale", which is available as a pdf via Google. If you're still interested, maybe check out The Minority Report (also available via Google.)

I'd probably start with The Man in the High Castle; Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep is a good second choice. A Scanner Darkly is excellent, but a bit harder to get into. Ubik, Now Wait for Last Year, the Zap Gun, Flow My Tears the Policeman Said, Three Stigmata, Galactic Pot-healer are all good, but some people find them off-putting.

Books with Yahweh (e.g. books after '73) are really out there. I liked Divine Invasion and am lukewarm on VALIS, but stay the gently caress away until you're on board.

i think that one of the biggest challenges ive had ever since i got to late 20s is quashing down this literal fight-or-flight response that has been steadily building in my brain for about five years

like, i can remain in society and do what i can to fix it, or i can say "gently caress you, i know how to grow a potato, go tweet yourself to death you cocksucker" and go buy 1000 acres and be happy (if lonely) for the rest of my life, but then i'm no better than republicans that hide in plain sight behind SUV steering wheels and gated community guard shacks. i dont want to give up, but gently caress if that's not what every synapse has been telling me lately

i dunno. its my friday, im off for the rest of the week, im rambly this morning

tbh people have been feeling like this for the last forty years, see the rise in the 70s of crunchy back-to-nature composting toilet mother gaia types and NWO tinfoil fortified compoundists

imo if things fall apart badly enough that society collapses to the point where urban/suburban areas are uninhabitable, being able to raise your own food and load your own ammunition isn't going to save you
