I just wish there was something akin to a SBARINFO Lump in ECWolf so I could code away the whole score and lives thing and then go hog wild modding the poo poo out of it. That was my only quip with Wolfenstein was the antiquated arcade thing it had. And yeah seconded, your attention to ECWolf is very appreciated.

Sorry, I just feel extremely self-conscious talking about/linking my stuff; it feels like I'm being self-aggrandizing. Elliotw2 posted:Why does the spaceship shoot battle armor, and why is your frame rate so terrible? The latter is because a lot of objects are actually recursive--in the background there's often a ton of health bonuses that infinitely spawn swarms of enemies as long as the map is active. Oftentimes these enemies spawn other enemies. It becomes a gigantic clusterfuck very quickly, you see. Also I play on a several-year-old laptop. When he was talking about Valve taking focus away from single player games he forgot to mention that they actually released two (Portal/Portal2), he also never mentioned Ricochet as one of Valves other titles. Actually, how is Ricochet? I apparently own it on steam for some reason, is it worth giving a go?

Ricochet could have been great if they'd gone through with their plan to improve on it continuously, like they later did TF2. Instead they released it and kinda forgot about it.

Ricochet is basically the game that gets trotted out when someone at Valve wants to make a joke. Like Jazz Jackrabbit for Epic or The Lost Vikings for Blizzard.

The first Jazz haven't aged that well but was great at the time. You should really try the sequel, they improved a lot of stuff from the first game.Keiya posted:Ricochet could have been great if they'd gone through with their plan to improve on it continuously, like they later did TF2. I like Ricochet. It's not that good as a serious game, but if you want a quick way to kill an hour, it's fine.

As for SBARINFO, there's the LATCHCFG lump that lets you rearrange the status bar readouts but you can't remove score or lives yet.

I am convinced Software mode actually looks better than OpenGL for Half-Life. I wonder what kind of effects are in Software mode that aren't in OpenGL/D3D. So far I've found that there's a "blur" effect (really the game's just rendered at half-resolution and stretched to fill the screen) that is triggered by scripted events (for example, walking through a teleporter, or watching the rocket blast off in On A Rail) or when swimming in water. In addition water surfaces are rendered differently, they have a texture animation of sorts that resembles Source engine's water surface rendering; you can see ripples in the water bounce off of each other. Hardware mode doesn't have the blur effect and the water surfaces look more similar to Quake's.

I remember reading about a souped up GoldSrc engine mod that someone made that added advanced shader effects and the like.

I linked a video, it's basically identical to Wolf4SDL except in a 32x ROM. The 32x has a higher color palette than the Genesis, so it uses the full color DOS sprites.
