Turns out in Brutal doom kicking a zombie marine doesn't out right kill them! I learned this after kicking a shotgunner to focus on a cacodemon just for him to stand back up and shoot and kill me from behind!

Have you ever tried kicking the space marines who are tied up to poles? For all I know this isn't a Brutal Doom thing, but I had never tried it before and was pleasantly surprised by the results.

You can kick them? I was sorta annoyed that I had to switch to my fists to do their thing.

So, just a quick interest check on something related:

There's a sort of critical mass problem with a lot of "dead" multiplayer games and especially mods where servers stay depopulated because everyone looks at the server browser and there are no populated servers so they quit.

I'm considering starting a thread (or using this one?) to fire up some retro multiplayer game/mod nights so some old-but-still-fun stuff can see daylight again, basically by just guaranteeing that a decent population will be on at the same time. Would there be any interest in this?

I would be down for old half life mods and the like. I have fond memories of playing the old WON Rocket crowbar.

I'm about two hours into Cry of Fear now. If you ever wanted a first person Silent Hill this is probably it. It has the bad combat, clunky inventory system (go into your inventory, click use/equip, then click on the key to try it), really disturbing enemies (dead children wrapped in garbage bags and the baby from Eraserhead), and it even has the endlessly trying locked apartment doors straight out of SH2. I have to admit it's gotten some jumps out of me. This is a lights off, headphones on type of game. I also like the dual wielding. Basically if you have you knife set to 1 and your flashlight set to 2, you can hit 1 and 2 at the same time to hold both. I'd also like to warn anyone who first starts playing it that it uses the realistic clips. Ammo won't transfer over to a new magazine so go easy on the reloading.

It also has inventory management. You can carry up to 6 things and a large weapon, like a shotgun. From one of the gameplay videos I saw a few months ago, you lose 3 inventory spaces at one point though. No storage box either, but syringes stack and bullets don't take up space.

Problem is, it was pointlessly bleak. It was Die Hard without any possible happy ending as far as I could find (and Google, too). Also I think part of the reason I found it fun was that even with the "realistic" mission statement (which I think is part of the reason for the bleakness... whatever) removing crosshairs and healing, I'd played so many HL1 mods that I didn't find myself really needing either.

The mod creator released a text file on his forums that had the good ending in it. You hop back through the vent the security guard boosted you through to get to the boss quicker, and have a huge gunfight between him and his henchmen. It was cut due to him wanting to release it on time I believe.

Yeah, I noticed that a few maps into Scythe 2. Also learned the hard way that DoomRL Arsenal doesn't really play well with the maps, seeing how it kills you to make you lose your weapons every now and again. That really bummed me out when I found a nano upgrade and only needed one more power to make my shotgun shoot nano shrapnel.

Even with the nerf to Scout, he's still extremely powerful once you get a tech and agility mod. It just takes 40 shots to kill a spider mastermind with a revolver instead of 20 now. :v:

DoomRPG is so fun in the mid-game but man, you quickly become an unstoppable beast and it loses its charm. Balancing that stuff is very difficult and the options are there to allow you to mess with it though. Right now Luck is absurdly overpowered, especially since it multiplies with the yellow aura. If you run that all the time during giant mob battles and continually pump Luck, it gets absurd with the fact that enemies can drop stat points so your power basically scales exponentially. I'm running around as a renegade with a Nano Super Shotgun and all augmentations upgraded and turned on and it's basically a shotgun machine gun shooting a wall of pellets in every direction forever. I think the only thing that comes close to surviving more than a second is the cyberdemon. My only foe is the lag from all the loot the enemies keep making GBS threads out :(

Edit: I'd probably advise to stay away from the arena in the UAC base is it levels you up way too fast.

The only thing I upgrade in DoomRPG is carry capacity. You still get a slight damage boost every level, but it doesn't become the situation where you are killing nightmare cyberdemons in 6 shots with a revolver as the scout. Also not using augments because they are ridiculously over powered.
