Quick gif-making question: Is there a way to create gifs from DVDs without having to rip the entire file off the disc first? I want to make some gifs from the UK NOAH shows but ripping DVDs takes forever

Well, you could play the file in VLC (or whatever other player), set the speed to slow and take a screencap of every frame. That's how I made my first gif, before I found Jerusalem's guide.

Otherwise, if you know whereabouts the segment is on the video, you can extract out particular vob files with DVD Decrypter and then open those with virtualdubmpeg (or virtualdub with appropriate plugins). Another option is to just record the sequence as it plays via Fraps if you own a copy of that, then open the avi file with Virtualdub
