Studying the art of terrorists

Based almost solely on recommendations from this thread, I decided to try Sports Night for the first time, since both seasons are on Netflix. And holy poo poo it's good. Like, really good. Characters are great, chemistry is spot on, and the writing is exactly the Sorkin fix I need. (Newsroom is good, but once a week, so not enough.) I'm kind of mad at myself for not watching this when it was on.

The laugh track though. drat is this bad. So out of place. But what's funny is that you can tell they're slowly phasing it out. Each episode it's used less and less, and when it's used the volume on it is slowly going down. Hell, there's one or two episodes when it's not used at all, but is back one episode later. Also, am I wrong, or is there a MASH type thing where, when they're actually broadcasting, there's never a laugh track? Or have I just not noticed it? Anyway, the way they use laugh track is weird, is what I'm trying to say.

But it's a great show, I love it. I'm only sad it's not going to take me much time to work through all 45 half hour episodes.

Also, Robert Guillaume is amazing.

On the other side of the spectrum, I had forgotten entirely about this line, but damned if this isn't the best threat I've ever heard. It's not over the top, it's not ooh aren't I edgy, it's just perfect. I am so saying this to someone one day.

Toby: I'm told that on my sunniest days I'm not that fun to be around. I wonder what's gonna happen when you make my children a part of your life.

On the funny side, from that episode:

Will: Who rides a bike to work when there's going to be a foot and a half of snow?
Toby: These are all good questions.

Well, Sorkin didn't want the laugh track and ABC insisted. That's why you can hear it slowly fading away as season 1 goes on. It goes away completely at the start of the season 2.

Also, Ainsley's ERA argument makes me roll my eyes so hard I actually think I've had a stroke. Though Mulready's affirmative action argument (however briefly articulated) is a really good point that never, ever gets brought up in actual discussions of policy. Basically the actual politics of the show are all over the place in terms of cohesion.

All of Ainsley's arguments are stupid. Even though most of them are worded/delivered to make her look like she was right or 'holding her own' it's all superficial horse poo poo and I can only think Sorkin did it on purpose.

Her ERA logic is only more hilarious when judged by today's republican attitude towards women.

Stupid exchanges.

Joe Quincy didn't sign his security questionaire. This exchange resulted.

JOSH Why haven't you signed the questionnaire?

JOE Because I can't.

JOSH [realizing] You lied on it?

JOE Yeah.

JOSH Which question?

JOE Number 75, "Have you ever done anything that would reflect poorly on the President?"

JOSH What'd you do?

JOE I didn't vote for him.

---

Oh my god, how stupid is that? If we're going to treat him like a real person, then you have to assume he didn't sign it because he thought having a noble and classy moment like that would give him a leg up in the interview, otherwise why would you possibly think that that is worthy of not signing a simple questionnaire? Joe Quincy, shut the gently caress up.

Also, Ainsley's ERA argument is perfectly fine and we should probably start enforcing the 14th amendment.

The 14th says all people shall have equal protection of the law. The ERA says you shall not discriminate on the basis of gender. They're two sides of the same coin.

Her 'point' is ideological bullshit. "I'm already a full citizen and don't need government regulation to tell me I am" is her main crux and considering the blatant disregard for which women were treated during the ERA's birth and still are today having a final document specifically pointing out that women shall not be treated as second class citizens would have been and likely still would be infinitely helpful to the cause of women's rights, if not only for the extra clause to challenge virtually every court ruling on.

It's also a subtle way for white republican women to differentiate themselves from minorities, because "oh *I'm* a white woman and don't need constitutional protection leave that to all the inferior blacks".

If you want a modern equivalent to Ainsley you only need to look as far as Ann Coulter. She eats up every republican talking point and spouts it back out facts be damned, including supporting the repeal of the Equal Pay Act which is something Ainsley also all but says she supports in the exact same argument with Sam.

edit: Forgot to mention that Ainsley actually uses the exact same argument as Coulter does for the EPA. Women aren't paid less because they're women, it's because they choose to be paid less so they can have children.

Considering that Paul Ryan (of "kill Medicare" fame, currently rumored to be Romney's VP pick) was serving his first term when the West Wing premiered, I'm not sure that bears out as much as you think. The GOP of the 1990s was well on the way to being the GOP of today, there were just fewer Hispanics to kick around.

Also, not to pile on, but the problem with Ainsley's facile "I don't need white men to tell me I have rights" argument is that the ERA came up because the Fourteenth Amendment wasn't getting it done. It's in keeping with the West Wing's fundamental naivete, but the unquestioned assumption that the government's isn't still in the business of loving over people who aren't white men makes a lot of these arguments ring hollow.

There's also a huge difference between "equal protection of the law" and "shall not discriminate," to say nothing of actually correcting imbalances, assuming (as the ERA's draft text had) a Section 5 analogue.

Yeah, the current political climate was first sown in 90 when the gang of five were elected, the one of which still in office is Boehner. They hated the idea of actually working with democrats on anything and started partisan screaming matches almost immediately. "I wrote the book on Willpower"

I'm doing a rewatch, and I'll be damned if the basketball pre-credit scene isn't one of the best

(can't find the video)

Josh Lyman: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Who's this?
President Josiah Bartlet: I'm making a substitution.
Toby Ziegler: Who is this guy?
President Josiah Bartlet: Mr. Grant's a new member of my team.
Toby Ziegler: A ringer, perhaps?
President Josiah Bartlet: Mr. Grant is a federal employee.
[Mr. Grant is played by real-life NBA forward Juwan Howard]
Toby Ziegler: You know the thing about you, Mr. President? It isn't so much that you cheat. It's how brazenly bad you are at it.
President Josiah Bartlet: I beg your pardon?
Josh Lyman: Toby's got a point there, sir.
President Josiah Bartlet: When have I ever cheated?
Toby Ziegler: Up in Florida, playing mixed doubles with me and C.J. You tried to tell us that your partner worked at the American consulate in Vienna.
President Josiah Bartlet: And she did.
Toby Ziegler: It was Steffi Graf, sir.
President Josiah Bartlet: Well, I will admit that the woman bore a striking resemblance...
Toby Ziegler: It was Steffi Graf, you crazy lunatic! You think I'm not going to recognize Steffi Graf when she's serving a tennis ball at me?

also cements Toby as the best character and makes me laugh a lot

Schiff's delivery of "It was Steffi Graf, you crazy lunatic!" is perfect

Being honest, I've never liked that scene.

1) Why did he have Mr. Grant sitting out the entire game only to sub him in for the last play? Bad team management.

2) Most importantly, Toby's yelling at the President the entire time about the better angels and blah blah who actually loving speaks to the President like that. At least when they had the argument about the President's father and about MS, they were alone, this is just Toby screaming at the President infront of everyone.

One of the best parts of WW to me is how the various characters interact with the President on most occasions, and then on more rare occasions they interact with Josiah Bartlet the human. The interplay between those types of dialogue was very well-executed, but Toby's was the best-written relationship, obviously.

Edit: Wonder why I picked "Josiah" instead of "Jed" when I wrote that.

Part of it was Toby's personality, to be sure, but a good part of it was that Toby was the only one besides Leo to be on the campaign from the start, when Bartlet was just a future also-ran. That begets a certain level of familiarity that I always found pretty earned.
