Try asking in the BSS comicking thread? I think people were talking about publishing/printing just recently in there.

A friend of mine has published via createspace.com and he highly recommends it. They deal directly with Amazon (maybe actually owned by Amazon?) and have many sizes and binding types including e-books. I don't think it costs the author anything to publish, unless you need professional services like editing, layout, marketing, etc. They have free layout tools so you can format the book any way you like. They print on demand, usually ship within 24 hours, and pay you royalties for each book they sell for you. You set the list price and they base your royalties on that. If you order copies for yourself you only pay for the cost of printing the book, not the list price. And no, I don't work for them, I'm another author looking into alternate publication resources. Hope that helps!

This actually sounds like totally awesome news for you. Assuming you've never actually published anything before: you get to study how it's done, and watch how the demand and distribution works in Finland; and then you get to use that knowledge to produce it yourself elsewhere because you only gave up the rights to publish it in your home country. That's a loving awesome deal. I know you want to get it out to all of us, but I think you should wait a bit and watch first. This way you can make the best decision based on whether your book is a hit, moderate success, or a dud(shouldn't happen, but you can never tell); and know what to do with that information. You got the most amazing deal you could possibly get. My first thought upon reading your post was: "My God! Finland has companies willing to produce and distribute items into an untested market without demanding future profits on overseas sales?" If I ever have a product I want to put to market, I know where I'm starting. The Human Crouton fucked around with this message at May 23, 2012 around 09:58 |

I didn't want to post because I didn't want anyone to get wicked excited that it's an OP update. But I have been trying to get in to comics and such for the last year, it's so hard to find stuff I really fall in love with, but I really did with this. Thank you for sharing it with us goons for free (mostly) and I will definitely be buying when it is available.

Hey guys. Some good news. We just loaded the ipad app onto appstore! It'll be anything between a day and two weeks to get approval. Here's a short demo: http://youtu.be/aWNcVHG75yI We'll price it at $2,99. We'll also do a 65-page lite version that's free. If and when we get approval from Apple, I'll be posting some promo codes for grabs in this thread. My friend who coded the app also composed some ambient music for the reader. I was at first kind of skeptical of the idea of adding background music to a comic, but it actually works pretty nicely. In the meantime, I'm working to set up an indiegogo campaign to get an english version of the book going. After some research, I think my best bet is to print the book in Canada, and to use a service called Fulfillment by Amazon to handle the the distribution. Shouldn't cost too much altogether. This way I can skip the massive shipping costs from Europe to the States, too. The tip about the BSS comicking thread was good, a goon there had had experience with publishing overseas, and he gave me some very good tips via email. shipwrek posted:Seconding this. Whoa, really? Sure, be my guest. Also, heres the cover of the book:

Yeah, I can't wait for this to be the real deal so I can move it to GBS for more exposure. The music was a really nice touch (but also include an option to read without, okay?).

^^ Yeah, the music is easy enough to turn off, no biggie. Also, if you have small children that use your ipad, you will be able to set access in the ipad restriction options. The appstore has rated the app as 12+, but I think some of the scenes can be a little much for kids that age. We'll see about an android version for kindle fire. If the ios app does well enough, we might put one together. Oh, and if you don't have an ipad and want to know how the story ends, I'm including a .pdf of the entire comic as a reward in the indiegogo campaign for a donation of $5 or more. Many posters in this thread will be getting the pdf for free, though (or the app, if they have an ipad). You've been a great help and a real inspiration, guys.

Yay klaivu! It would be great to get a Kindle version, but I can understand if it's not possible. I don't have an iPad and I can at least jack someone's Kindle Fire to read it. I would love to see the ending of this. I've already started writing up a review on my tumblr to spread the word.

^^Working on it, it'll launch alongside the app. And we'll start working on the kindle version if the ipad app picks off. Here's the finnish cover: ![]() I didn't post the back of the english version, it's the same as in this one. The original name for the comic was "Portrait of a Jaybird", and the cover is based on this - it's a painting like the ones in jaybirds' house, only of little jaybird himself. (The white sticker on the back is for the isbn and the barcode). klaivu fucked around with this message at Jul 22, 2012 around 18:53 |

Gotta quick question about your painting style: when it's coming to your texturing, like on the Jaybird's sleeves there, are you painting each line individually or using a brush? It's got an almost wood-cut look to your work and I kinda want to replicate that at some point.

Awesome stuff. Will the iPad version be retina? Going to buy it either way, but hoping that it is
|
| # ? Jul 23, 2012 04:37 |

Yeah, the app is in retina resolution. Also, I've redone the speech balloons by hand - the font kinda sucked. Here are the brushes I've been using. I use the second brush here to work out the general shapes and values of objects, and then use the first brust to texture them. I'm painting each line individually. ![]() ![]() VVV: Yeah, we're going to post it sometime after the app launch. klaivu fucked around with this message at Jul 25, 2012 around 17:09 |

I'm sure I don't need to tell you this on top of everyone else, but this was fantastic. I was halfway through your first post and wondering why you were even bothering to put it up for critique. You mentioned that you based in on a short story your brother wrote. Would it be possible for you to post that? You've told the story in such a beautifully visual way that I'm finding it hard to imagine it being told in pure prose, and I'd be really interested to read it just from a technical point of view.

Unfortunately, the app got a rejection per these guidelines: quote:2.21: Apps that are simply a song or movie should be submitted to the iTunes store. Apps that are simply a book should be submitted to the iBookstore Apparently, they're pushing developers to publish content for iBooks, and aren't accepting apps that are readers. We're discussing what we can change about the app to make it a fit, adding more interactive features such as language versions. We would really rather publish this as an app rather than an iBook, but if there really is no other way, it'll be published as an iBook. So, it seems this'll take a couple more weeks. Sorry guys.

I'm not sure about how you'd work out the payment portion, but have you considered just releasing it as a web app? Platform-independent for wider exposure, no arbitrary interpretation of App Store rules.

Hi guys. The comic is now for sale on iBookstore as an iBook. Also, this thread will be moved to GBS soon (I think. Maybe. Possibly). Here's the cover for the iBook: ![]() Also, I've put up an Indiegogo campaign to fund a print run in the United States. So, If you have an ipad, you can buy the iBook right away. We had to strip the animations, but found workarounds to make the background music work. (You can still turn it off if you want to). If you want to have a hardcover version, you can help us by supporting the Indiegogo campaign. Here's the site we put together as a sort of platform for both the iBook and the Indiegogo campaign: http://www.jaybird-comic.com It has the first 65 pages of the comic, a link to the iBook and the campaign, and some basic share buttons. Here's the link to the iBook: http://itunes.apple.com/book/jaybir...&ign-mpt=uo%3D4 And here's a link to the Indiegogo campaign: http://www.indiegogo.com/jaybird-comic (The video features music Sauli composed for the iBook). Aand Little Jaybird has his own facebook page now: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Jayb...279734188810398 As before, everything is open to critique, so if you see something dumb anywhere on the sites I've posted, please let me know. Here are some promo codes for the iBook. They're valid for the next four weeks. P6YLY3HJPT4T PLYYFJAJLP7X Whew! Getting this thing out there really was a lot harder than I initially thought. And took a really long time. And I found that coding for browser compatibility is one of my least favorite things. I'll be sending PM's to people who have helped me by posting critique, you'll get either a promo code for the iBook, or a .pdf with the entire story. But now I think it's time for Cheers! klaivu fucked around with this message at Oct 6, 2012 around 09:41 |
