Manchild King posted:I see far more similarities than differences. I would say the key difference is that CWC represents what to many people is a fairly disturbing concept: a sexually aggressive child. He has all the self-absorbed grandiosity and limited mentality of a small child, but this is combined with a fairly creepy adult sexuality that seems only barely limited by his limited socialization. In part, the desire to mock him may be in order to try and shame him into changing his socially unacceptable behavior, out of fear of what he would do if his efforts were unchecked. Of course, this is completely the wrong way to go about such a thing, and the guy clearly has some mental deficiencies, but still. I also agree that the degree to which internet people have meticulously cataloged his life is kind of creepy and sad on its own. I also (playing internet doctor) doubt he's autistic - he's probably just mildly retarded. It seems like an autistic person would not have an obsession with personal approval. And spending that much time making fun of a retarded person seems kind of... unsporting. The mentally retarded are normally sort of treated like and thought of as children, but they are also adults. Thus, the combination of a child's mind and adult sexuality is strange and off-putting and not one which people enjoy thinking about, let alone watching. In CWC's case, when he starts having the desires of an adult, we start holding him up to the standards of an adult, which is probably why people are being so uncharitable to what in the end is a mildly retarded person flailing about and suffering on the internet. Uli, on the other hand, has a sort of innocence about him which, combined with his obsessive fascination or abject confusion with everyday things and generally sweet disposition, instead evokes a far more positive child-like image. Here, he represents a combination of the sometimes odd priorities and obsessions of a child with the more developed intellect and abilities of an adult. This is a far more interesting and tolerable combination of adult and childlike characteristics. Cream_Filling fucked around with this message at Jul 24, 2011 around 14:19 |

Arthe Xavier posted:Indeed, and that is exactly why I have fallen in love with Platform Masters already, and why I can't wait to throw a bit of money his way once he releases it. He basically made his own dream-game ( as he seems to love great heights and velocities ), and even though the foreground-objects really seem like placeholders, I am seriously impressed by the parallax-scrolling backgrounds. That man actually has some tangible talent. The movement does have this sort of floating, dream-like quality, too. Basically it's like he's trying to replicate one of those flying dreams. Also, when he goes like 10,000 feet up or whatever, it's actually genuinely interesting and even beautiful in a way. I wish there was a way to introduce him to libraries and better programming practices so he could be more productive, actually. It's really quite interesting to get a look into his head like this.

ConanTheLibrarian posted:He is making a bad game that will not be fun to play unless, like him, you are loving obsessed with parallax and simplified equations of motion. There's lots of detail because he spends hours every day thinking about this stuff. That level of focus leads to an overly narrow perspective which is why he's not a good artist, writer or even programmer. You're a dick, bro. Are you mad because nobody called you a genius or something?

BlastYouVileWoman posted:What is being a dickish about that? It's a lot shittier to misrepresent and overblow the guy's capabilities or to look for something that isn't there. I just don't get where the dude's anger is from. Angrily pointing out the obvious is one way of being a dick. It's pretty clear people don't think he's performing at a superior genius level at anything (besides at being himself), so getting mad about people throwing the term "genius" around and pointing out the obvious problems of a troubled kid on the internet just seems either petty as hell or just plain dense. That said, his game is legitimately fascinating as a piece of outsider art, particularly as video games are typically not a medium available to most outsider artists. Also, despite its horrifying name, apparently the "meat trick" just had to do with finding succulent cuts of meat at the supermarket by looking at how much fat you could see in the meat, which he later retracted because someone (possibly his mom) told him fat is bad for you.

Maarek posted:This is quite funny because you and other people who have replied to Conan are the only ones who've shown actual hostility. Maybe because pointing out what everyone else already knows is dumb, humorless, and pointlessly mean spirited? We all know Uli's mental illnesses are not doing him any good. You and others are not pointing out something that Uli's fans do not already know and fully understand. It means that Conan and others are absolutely missing the point. If this were pro wrestling, he would be the one shouting "YOU KNOW IT'S ALL FAKE AND THEY ALL USE STEROIDS and when their career ends their life is often really pathetic and Hulk Hogan had some really lovely kids." No poo poo. That's not "bringing reality," that's just being a condescending rear end who assumes he knows more than anyone else and, upon failing to understand what's going on, assumes everyone else is the idiot. It's not like people here are somehow holding Uli back from getting treatment because he's such a delicate gifted snowflake or something. Honestly, nothing we do can really change his situation short of internet detectiving up his guardians and sending them a bunch of specialists and a boatload of cash. People find his strange thought processes fascinating. If you don't, then just ignore it and move on. We do not need to be enlightened.

You laugh, but this is actually where the Japanese games industry seems to be headed. Well, that and lolita animes.
