So, Warren Ellis opened his mouth about the sales.

"So DC Comics' media-blitzed massive relaunch of its entire line in September got them this: A half-point lead in dollar share over Marvel Comics (who had one high-profile launch in the September frame). A five-point lead in units sold over Marvel Comics. But all those units DC sold are returnable. Thank god all those DC execs told everyone they weren't interested in market share. Otherwise someone might have come away with the notion that DC really intended to give Marvel a fight in the marketplace and make Marvel sort their own poo poo out. What a stroke of luck for everybody."

Are all issues of All Star going to be $3.99? I thought that issue was just more expensive because of its page length.

I imagine it's just because it has the words "Justice League" in the title, sort of like how anything with "Bat" in the title tends to do okay. Curious that it did slightly better than Justice League International, though.

Yeah beating JLI was strange, as not-so-hot as JLI was. It also beat Nightwing (by a hair), Catwoman (surprising and not) and Batwing ("Bat" in the title but not too surprised the demographic isn't going to give the "Batman of Africa" a chance, regardless of how amazing it looks).

Rand alPaul posted:

It could be that it's a Justice League title, it could also be that its cover art was pretty cool. For some reason it always stood out when I looked at it in the previews.

Green Arrow is baffling. It was terrible for the reasons you mentioned and its cover wasn't even cool looking.

The Justice League Dark cover was beautiful, too bad the interior was puke. I might've kept buying it if the colors looked like what was on the cover. It looked like what the rest of the issue should have. The faux-CGI bright-and-shiny aesthetic really works against the rest of the art.

I figure Green Arrow must have devoted fans that buoyed it. But this take is nothing like the GA I'm (somewhat) familiar with.

Also gonna go sulk about OMAC, Men of War, Static Shock, Grifter and Resurrection Man selling less than Hawk and Dove.

Edit for clarity

I thought the reason the percentage lead wasn't as high was BECAUSE the stock sold was returnable, but it sounds like Ellis is saying that the slight edge we're seeing could still be reduced due to returnability? Which is right?

Superman is not supposed to be someone who's "down-on-his-luck".....that's not the reason why I read Superman comics. If I wanted that, I'd go read a Spider-Man comic. Barnes and Noble is pulling all trades that DC made exclusive to the Amazon Kindle from their stores. How do you guys think this is going to effect DC?

Those are literally the only DC comics anyone ever buys where I work. This situation will slightly bruise B&N, but it will absolutely hurt DC. You have to realize, nobody goes to B&N to specifically buy a DC book unless there's a movie coming out. Nobody comes in to get Green Lantern: Agent Orange. They simply see the book, find it interesting and pick it up. To add to that, Christmas retail is crazy in that people will buy anything sitting there. Parents will buy comic trades without knowing a thing about them. If this was about comics in general, then B&N would be in trouble. The fact that they have an extensive Marvel library and third party stuff in there means that DC is getting the rawest deal in this.

They'll still stock DC titles, but all that will be left are the outdated trades of stuff that nobody was buying, hence the reboot.

All-Star Western has become one of my top five of the relaunch and is replacing Red Lanterns on my pull list. And I LOVE those rainbow jerks, but after two issues of Atrocitus monologuing to his dead enemy about his past I'm bored. Yes, I do care about character background, it's interesting Atrocitus was a psychologist and clearly loved his family, but these first two issues could have been told in one with potentially his 'lieutenant' or whatever selected by page 22.

I keep considering Animal Man after all the praise it's gotten here - I was planning to just pick it up in trade (much like OMAC, which I just can't get into) but after the sales news I don't want to see it cancelled!

Well, then you can go and not read Action Comics? Nobody's trying to Marvelize Superman; if you'd paid attention to the hype about Action, it was specifically about going back to the roots of the character, which Morrison seems to be doing quite well...

Some guy in my LCBS started talking to me about the new 52. He told me he could only pick up four comics and he was going to grab Green Arrow, Firestorm, Detective Comics and some equally lovely comic. All I could ask him was "...why?" When I tried to force Animal man down his throat he said "Yea but I don't really know Animal Man." Isn't that the point of the reboot? I hate this man.

Andy Kubert will be drawing issues 5 and 6 of Action Comics.

quote:

Fresh off of his bestselling FLASHPOINT miniseries, industry legend Andy Kubert will be joining critically acclaimed writer Grant Morrison for a special, two-issue arc of ACTION COMICS in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. Issues #5 and #6 will guest star the Legion of Super-Heroes, while also laying groundwork for things to come much, much later in Superman’s story. And keep an eye out for Krypto!
...
After Kubert’s two-issue take on ACTION COMICS, Rags Morales will return as the series’ regular artist.
It's unclear if this is to give Rags time to catch up (if he is indeed falling behind schedule) or if this was planned from the beginning, but in either case this is spectacular.

Pre-reboot Superman consisted of years of terrible, terrible comics. No imagination; just regurgitation of boring, broken concepts. At least Morrison is trying something new.

Not quite, I think that it enhances Superman. Getting a job at a newspaper in this day and age is supremely difficult. Some people want you to intern and work for free for months. Some internships even say they won't let you intern without previous internships, "we will not let you work for us for free unless you have worked for someone else for free first and already have the skills we want".
But Clark Kent has something special, so he works for a newspaper, even if it may have been hard to get there, and even if it's going to be harder in the future. Superman has it. And so does Lois Lane. And Jimmy Olsen. No-one knows what it is, but it is it.

That chart isn't terribly accurate. And while DC's status quo until recently was a solid argument for a reboot/revamp, their specific method of doing so isn't helping things at all.

Take that chart, smoosh it into five years*, and then cross out random things and put question marks next to other. Voila! The New 52.

I've gotten every #1 except Animal Man and only because I haven't been able to find that fucker everywhere.

I'm almost entirely new to DC comics here, having always been a Marvel dude when I bought a comic. I understand plenty about the big names, etc, but the way the universe works, the major events, etc I'm badly out of the loop.

Anyways so far I'm adding the following to my pull list:

Red Lanterns - loving loved this book but I'm a sucker for righteous wrath. Favorite out of the ones I've read so far and it isn't even close.

Swamp Thing - Some pretty cool concepts, didn't blow me away or anything.

Batwoman - Never read a book with a female main but I really liked this one.

All the Green Lanterns because it seems like the only title that involves anything in space and I'm a sucker for space-based comics.

Dead Man - Enjoyed it even if the concept is a knock off of Quantum Leap. The only thing I don't like about this character is that hideous outfit with the stupid capital D on it. I mean I get that it's probably something from his circus outfit but man seriously, you're dead but your fashion sense doesn't have to be.

Resurrection Man - Really liked the concept as long as his new powers every resurrection aren't a deus ex machina. It'll be cool if his new powers are a drawback.
Blue Beetle - Seemed interesting enough to keep going a few more.

Ones I'm going to get a few more of:

Suicide Squad - I guess I'm supposed to hate this but I didn't. I liked the intro and the Shark charater is so stupidly over the top that I like him and want a figure.

Captain Atom - Not terrible but didn't exactly grab me.

Death Stroke - Same as above.

Demon Knights - I felt like I needed more exposition because I was lost but I do like the idea of a comic based in some medieval/fantasy timeline.

Ones I'm seriously probably done with:

Action Comics. I read this with as open a mind as I could possibly bring to the table considering it is Superman. Superman has always seemed like a really boring concept to me and this did very little to change that. I keep reading everyone's comments about how great it was and my LCBS guys were saying it was a great one to start with but it just bored the poo poo out of me. Superman is too perfect, too noble, I really enjoy characters with more flaws or vulnerabilities.

Teen Titans. Just not for me I guess.
