Zatanna's dad was a magician, so she became one. Also, she's know Batman since she was 4 and he was 9. That's pretty much all you need to know.

Quick question.

do I get a little kiss?

Dropped Teen Titans because gently caress Scott Lobdell and his 'if you don't like it's YOU who are sexist' bullshit. The book itself is ok but he's got no subtlety at all. 'I could FALL IN LOVE with THIS WOMAN'. OK yeah thanks for the setup. I'm gonna guess it's 3 issues til they take care of Tim Drake's pesky virginity, if he's bothered to leave it in place at all. Also, sock-tits everywhere.

Dropped JLD because I just wasn't feeling it. Art was pretty though. Dropped New Guardians from my pull but may keep picking it up at random. I love Kyle Rayner Hard to break away.

Flash is beautiful and Manapul did a great job executing Barry's new think-fast abilities. Too many words, but other than that, a great book thus far.

The first one tells a new reader everything they need to know about the character to get started - it's fun, it's sexy, it's a little absurd and it immediately identifies her as a magician of some sort. The second could belong to any random goth girl circa 1998. Pointless.

I was thinking about Zatanna's portrayal and why I don't really like her and what it comes down to is that I love stage magic. And Zatanna doesn't seem like stage magician to me (and, I assume based on the fact that she's a DC character where everybody is a "world class" whatever they do for their day job, she's supposed to be a really good one). She's never written as having any charisma or flair and doesn't get to demonstrate any of the interesting side talents that a quality stage magician would have; she doesn't get to do any sleight of hand or lock picking or escape artistry even. She's often written as being very serious and grave and I can't for the life of me think of a successful stage magician who frowns that much. I try to piece together what a Zatanna show might look like in my head and I just get this awful image of her striding out on stage and makes some grave pronouncement and then gestures with a serious expression on her face and some magical effect takes place.

(This problem sidesteps the perhaps important question of whether anybody in a world with honest-to-goodness metahumans and magic would want to go see a stage magician's show. I imagine that they would but that to be successful you'd end up with more of a Penn & Teller attitude in general where they're directly telling the audience 'now we are going to fool you without using any special powers'.)

Well, in a world full of actual magicians, it might make magic shows more interesting. Every time you go to one, there's an off-chance that it IS real magic!

I think it's only a small percentage of the populace that has magical abilities, though. That might've changed with the reboot, but I thought the premise of magic in DC was that even though it's real, people who could do it were very rare, and people who could do it on Zatanna's level were exceptional. I also think Zatanna's whole shtick was that she used her stage magic skills to enhance her real magic and vice versa.

I figured they changed the costume as a gently caress you to Dini. Why would they want to do that to Dini, I have no idea, but at least his wife no longer looks like Zatana.

I assure you, Dini is crying right now because of this.
I expect it'll be all of four weeks before her costume returns to the classic look.

Not DC, but The Incredible Herc over at Marvel. His current series isn't as good, mostly because it keeps getting dragged into crossovers.

Other than Green Arrow, JLI and Firestorm you're actually likely to reach in and pick up a fun comic just based on what looks interesting.
I'm following over 30 decent titles. It's a little bit incredible.

Gonna read Stormwatch #2 today to see if I want to replace JLI on my pull list. I liked JLI #1, JLI #2 lost me for some reason. Mainly I think I want them to get past the retarded 'WHO IS THE LEADER' subplot or whatever and just get the gently caress on with the story.

What's the consensus on Booster Gold - ironically awesome or Deadpool levels of done to death?

Booster's first few issues were written by Johns and were really quite fun. After Johns left Jurgens took over and while not painstakingly bad, the run was fairly mediocre.

Stormwatch is only getting one more chance from me, though; if issue #3 is as stilted and exposition-heavy as the first two, I'm done with it.

Booster's pretty awesome when done right, but he's really easy to do wrong. It's definitely one of those things where it depends on how funny the writer is.

Not sure what that has to do with DC, but we actually got this in Spider-man a while back, where he went by "The Trapster", dressed in a bunch of rags, and was suffocating people by sticking their heads to lampposts, and the cops were retarded and thought Spider-man'd done it. Then he teamed up with Spidey in his Dusk identity to go murder Norman Osborn.
