it's the final over-extension of imperialism to use mercenary armies in foreign wars of imperialist aggression. we never had to use these merc armies, but now they won't go away. because of pay, the military elite quit the military to join them!!

then you have like Halliburton and Lockheed which have always been there, but these guys just have giant bloated contracts that build lots of worthless stuff and it's a big game of pay the republican party more money. It's shady politics that result in over-sized contracts and it's white collar crimes, but it's bound to imperialism as well. making profit on a politics of war

Oh, don't get me wrong, there is a lot of dating, relationships, and sex down here but nothing you wouldn't find in a college dorm. I think most of the stories pop up because in a search for privacy, some couples will do it in survival shelters, saunas, laundry rooms, and such. Also the whole jello wrestling thing which go blown outa proportion. As to why some people leave, its a bunch of reasons. I'm not military , nor have I been to Iraq/Afghanistan but apparently in addition to more money you get more personal perks. One of the girls in my supply department did not like the conditions, saying she liked it better in Iraq and left. I think she had her own room and internet there, while here she had 3 room mates and a public kiosk. Internet here is censored, you are technically not allowed to stream any media and you can't get the net in your room. There is wireless, but only scientists get it. ANYTHING that uses p2p sharing will get you a red flag from IT, legit or no. Scientists don't have to follow the rules contractors do. Fresh goods like fruit are extremely limited and only come in when the C-17s can make it. People apparently freak out if they cant have a banana. Housing wise you can have anywhere from 2 to 4 room mates but I would think contractors from the war zone contracts would be used to this. No over time. I also think a lot of it boils down to lower pay and bullshit overload. Like safety is supposedly priority one down here but only the easily fixed problems are delt with while the complex ones are ignored. Its all personal preference I guess, but after hearing about stuff people got in the war zones, I kinda want to snag an Iraq or Afghanistan contract now just so I can compare. Fun Fact: Many of the people who failed the psych exam for the winter season this year went to Afghanistan. If you want some pay/hours base lines. Basic IT is around 8-900 a week Supply (my job) is around 550 start with seniors around 750 start a week Firefighters 1060 a week I'm sure there is higher pay in places like satcom and what not, but these are what I know. we work 6 days a week, 9 hours a day, and get 2 days off for new years, Christmas, and Thanksgiving.

Yup, Antarctica is basically a normal stateside job but on another planet. Maybe if they find Al Queda down here I can get a pay raise. Still, sitting in my office watching penquins run by is pretty cool. Myself and some other supply peeps heard DynCorp is on a massive hiring spree for pretty much everything. I might try my luck there since I leave the ice in 2 weeks.

Meaning do you get any hardship differential or anything? Tax breaks? There has to be some type of benefit besides penguins. On a side note, my company is sponsoring a University of Georgia (UGA) research trip to Antarctica this summer. 10 days or so of college kids running around. Not sure what station they are going to.

The more skilled you are labor wise the more you get. Booze is cheap and there are a lot of fun parties. People tend to like the small town feel. There is a 20% completion bonus and a nice travel package when you leave. Lots of time for snow sports on the weekend and outdoor stuff. A lot of people here will come down for the summer (6-7 months), pull in about 20-30k (more if they are skilled labor), and then fly home to other seasonal contracts in the states (mostly Alaska). Others will take the pay and go on travel sprees until they return. Winter contracts get you your own room, wireless, less oversight, and more days off. If you work here 30 years the NSF names and Island after you. Also from talking to the former military/contractors, a lot of them like to de-compress here. Pay is all over the board here really, so depending on who contracted you, and what your skill set is you might find it ok. We do have a pretty high employee retention rate so a lot of people find something here they like. Dunno what those kids are going to do in 10 days, a bad storm can last that long here. deadly potato fucked around with this message at Sep 28, 2011 around 04:31 |

Square Pair posted:Read my PM - if you have a funding source and 'supportive' contracting officer - it's pretty quick and easy if you stay below certain thresholds. As a small company you want to fly under the radar from the big fish. There is no way you can compete unless it is a small business set-aside (and even then the fuckers find small businesses to front for them). They'll literally buy the contract taking a loss just to hire your people and watch you fold. I may be an idiot who has stayed on past my initial obligation, but if this PM has information about setting up a start up I would be curious to see it if you don't mind. I don't have PM's but my email is manmythlegend20 at yahoo.

Anyone have any insight as to what the overseas deployed field is like for IT people? About six years ago I got pinged for a sort of combo sys/net admin / field engineer / programmer position in Baghdad but I wasn't really in a place to go (had just started a new full time job, was working on finishing my BSc); I've always sort of wondered about what might have been I suppose. These days I'm more into development than admin, not sure how common that is for stations abroad though. This more an idle curiosity post than anything else. v
