I thought 'old gods' usually referred to the Asgards or Greeks and such. Initially I thought Cthulhu-esque gods, but those are "Old Ones". Semantics! VVVV Basically. It's their game, they get to do whatever the hell they want with it. Malachite_Dragon fucked around with this message at Aug 31, 2011 around 01:44 |

Granted, there are some interesting things to be had here and there because of it, but there is no consistency even within the games. I think I brought this up earlier, but Myrmecolion's entire existence makes the plot and setting essentially impossible. EDIT: His quote makes a whole lot of sense if you take it as a sarcastic indictment of society and the way people live their lives. We rarely have the luxury of thinking through the choices before us. Much of what we do is based on style over substance; selfish actions get taken because the people espousing them are personally nice to us, we surrender our wills to others because it is convenient and beneficial in the short run, and when we try to break out of the pre-determined paths we are on, we face storms of opposition and in the end it doesn't turn out to be all that much better anyways. I think that Japanese artists would find this a lot truer as well. We might as well pick based on the flashy stuff after all. Dammit Kaneko, go back to talking about how gay Jun and Tatsuya are. The Schwarzwelt has to exist without the presence of humans for the plot to work, but it is dependent on demons to exist. If demons can be and are generated by humans, then a) how do they exist without humanity and b) this renders the moral judgments of humankind by the supernatural jokes because we created it all in the first place! Sure, we could propose some kind of tiering that allows gods to exist without humans, but that introduces a lot of speculation into the mix. Pureauthor posted:I'm pretty sure the most meaningful choice I would make if I were in the Scwarzwelt would be to lock myself up in my room. In the sense of trying to encourage, say, picking the path in any given SMT game that you personally think is best (rather than gaming the system to pick the path with the most content or better loot), I can appreciate the notion. And it seems fairly clear that such is the intent, in that the paths in general are not reallllly of the good end/bad end type. Obviously it's a two way street, since as long as there are gamey advantages to picking one path over the other, players will do so, but they've been taking steps in recent designs to mitigate it quite a bit.

I hope that few other people working on this thing are half as pretentious. The problem, as one of my girlfriends has said, is that SMT is a japanese game. Therefore it has japanese ideals. To us, or at least, to my friend and I, the games paths are too culturally different for us to enjoy. I dunno. In usual western RPGs, when you have a choice of "law" or "chaos" it's mostly this: "Law": You're a paladin. Or other powerful loyal knight, or powerful mage. You can probably also heal. You're extremely loyal to your god, who is all-knowing. You never see your god, or if you do he's a ball of light/something magical. Your god grants you powers. You fight for the forces of good, and have a happy ending where you save the world. "Chaos": You're a "black knight". Or a barbarian, or a berserker. Or a powerful dark mage. Your magics are all attack magics. You aren't loyal to your god, you follow whatever benefits you most. You usually see your god, who is a demon or generally a scary guy. Your god grants you powers. You fight for the forces of evil, or at least the forces that benefit you, and have a "bad" ending where your god/you take over the world and delve it into hellish anarchy. "Neutral": You're a goddamn druid, aren't you? Or an archer, or a fairy. You can heal. You're loyal to nature. You don't have a god, or if you do it's a tree or something. Your god grants you powers, or you get them from nature. You fight for the forces of..uh. Well, not pure good or pure evil. You have a boring ending where you live in a hut the rest of your days with your overweight dwarven wife. In SMT: Law: God god god god god. All god all the time. Nothing but god. Serve god. Give god your life. Hopefully get some hot angel chicks in your party, that's all to look forward to. Chaos: Kill kill kill kill destroy EVERYTHING. Even yourself. And the planet. Who cares we're cHaOTiC man! Demon pussy is so much better than human pussy anyway! Neutral: Sit there and play with your organ. You have nothing better to do. You'd play Agnus Dei on it but that's just too Law for you.

Docahedron posted:The problem, as one of my girlfriends has said, is that SMT is a japanese game. In Japan as a whole (ignoring the SMT trappings for a sec), it's more: Law: Give of yourself to the group, do your duty and all will be well Chaos: Live for yourself, take what you can, if anyone can stop you, they deserve it Neutral: Live for balance, strive for balance, balance brings peace to all For example, I remember reading an interview with one of the localization managers at Atlus who spoke about some of the alignment choices in Raidou Kuzunoah and King Abbadon. He mentioned that the Law path meant sending a girl to do her duty to her family (being a sacrifice) while Chaos meant telling her to run. In the West, for many people, that wasn't too much of a choice at all, while in Japan, it's a much harder choice overall, since they think more of working for the whole than forging ahead by yourself, a concept arguably more accepted in the West, where rugged individualism is more of a cultural norm.

Update 18![]() We can't make ANYTHING with Onmoraki at the moment, everything being extra levels. That'll take a while. ![]() And of course, treasure. ![]() Another convenience is that by pressing a button, we can see just what staus ailments, buffs or DEBUFFS apply to everyone, even enemies. ![]() And in a single random encounter, both Hua Po and Kaso get identified. We'll see. ![]() Knocker provides his source. Good thing. Now we can get rid of him. ![]() Let's see what Hua Po's got to say. ![]() Hua Po: "Um... I guess it won't hurt to say a few words... right? Hey... Why are you standing so far away? Don't tell me you're scared of me... That's not it, is it?" ![]() Many times, that is a trap. That leads to enemies attacking one for one's gullibility. That is not fun. ![]() Hua Po: "Humans have been researching demons for a long time now, right? " ![]() Hua Po: "That-s right. Demons are reeeeeeal scary. We're far more advanced than humans, after all." ![]() She liked that York would not fall for such a trap/was eing careful about all that. ![]() ![]() Of course, we want that. Just that. ![]() Hua Po: "Okay! With you, I'm sure this'll be fun! I'm Jurae Hua Po! Nice to meet you!" ![]() Success! ![]() Weak against ice and wind, but strong against Fire. Our first multi-target spell as well! Maragi will be quite useful for a while. ![]() Hey, she was speaking just fine! That bio is wrong! ![]() "service. It is said to appear before monks who neglect their duties." ![]() And here is a little thing. S-Source indicates if the source has been acquired for that particular demon. Hua Po's is not flashing, or even filled, so we don't have it. ![]() Meanwhile, Pixie's D-Source indicator is filled and flashing, along with a completely dilled Analyze bar. ![]() ![]() ![]() York is not a businessman, maybe a hero, yes, but right now he is a stranger. Kaso's got the childish personality type. York is clearly a stranger to Kaso. ![]() Kaso: "But it makes you sound really cool! Like an outlaw! Hey... I have a question for you. It's kind of a guy thing. " ![]() Of course! York does like the ladies, after all. ![]() Kaso: "I guess I thought soldiers wouldn't be interested in women, but it looks like I was wrong. Hey, you're pretty good at making small talk. You must be used ot dealing with kids. Umm, I mean, not that I'm really a kid anymore! " ![]() Once again, I wanted a bead, goddamnit. ![]() Well, let's try that again. ![]() ![]() Excellent. ![]() ![]() "suitors to obtain a robe made from the fur." ![]() It's a ball of fire with rat limbs. It actually looks kind of creepy, doesn't it? It is pretty weak, in any case. ![]() And with it, we can make A FUSED DEMON! Fusion! Also on Viddler ![]() ![]() Fused like that the Tengu would get one new skill, Bufu. ![]() But if we take the Pixie source, let's see what we could get. ![]() Bufu, Media, and Agi as bonus skills! That is very convenient! It is a Law thing, so that would prevent neutral York from doing followup attacks when hitting another thing's weak spot. Still, convenient! ![]() And so, let's fire it up. ![]() First the first part gets atomized. ![]() Then the second. ![]() Third part is the Source. ![]() Then they are thrown to the forthing, bubbly pot, and thus the mixture is done. ![]() ![]() And a new thingie is processed! ![]() Koppa Tengu: "Name's Yoma Koppa Tengu. Nice meetin' ya." ![]() Of course, Koppa Tengu can be fused again, just not at the moment. Those are too high-level for York so far. Particularly the lady form of a Brazilian football/soccer superstar. Or whatever. ![]() Strangely, no bufu. I might have messed up something there. Doesn't matter, though. ![]() ![]() And then we simply buy the rat back from the archives. It is pretty expensive, though. Almost as much as Tengu himself, as seen there. ![]() Almost. Also, just 2% of the Compendium has been filled. ![]() Strike Team: "The Schwarzwelt's a real pain... The deeper we go, the stronger the demons get. Let's be careful, okay? Oh, yeah, have you tried out Demon Fusion yet? I can explain it if you need me to." ![]() Yeah, no thanks. If it is needed, it shall be asked in the future. ![]() ![]() And another Terminal right here. That may indicate that there's something dangerous down the road. ![]() And here it is a very dangerous Unknown. HARD hitting, resistant to many things, and in general, just a nasty customer. It killed several of the minions, with a nasty physical attack that hits multiple times per round, so if in the end it was just York with no summoned things, it wuld KILL HIM, since it would hit him two or three times guaranteed. ![]() Eventually, it ran out of mp, so it could not cast it anymore. Probably would've been better if it had been cast from HP instead, making the fight SLIGHTLY less long/dangerous. ![]() And we see it was a goddamn Oni. That thing is nasty, let me tell you. The gremlins went down fast, but the Oni managed to kill things. ![]() Afterwards, considering all things that happened, it was wise to return to the base and see if new equipment was available. Which it was. A new gun! ![]() A new gun which made York's Gun Attack shoot up to 29, when it was around 14 previously. Hell yes. Definitely a worthwhile purchase. ![]() And an item that will not be acquired yet since it only provides like 20 HP, or something. In any case, since York is level seven, submissions for passwords for demons from levels one to seven are acceptable. And so on and so forth. Because that functionality will be shown in the next update. Luisfe fucked around with this message at Sep 1, 2011 around 02:39 |

Yes because the fact that exploring a fictional world and getting to know it's inhabitants appeals to me clearly means I have no friends. Thanks for that. I'm not sure why you are so against the idea of games that explore the concept of something strange and unusual intruding onto semi-normal life, but you are going to have to deal with that at some point what with it being one of the major settings for, well any kind of fantasy at all. I always thought Kaso was a sort of lion guy, not a rat. I guess I never used one in the end apart from filling out the compendium, as it's pretty clearly a rat in close-up. An Oni is a nasty thing to fight early on. I think most sectors end up with one or two demons that just make you think 'oh dear' every time you see them. Well, once you've got enough analysis to actually see what's kicking your head in.

There's nothing at all wrong with the Social LInks structure in P3 or 4, and the concern that this is going to become some sort of "new face" of the series or that it will even affect other games beyond the Persona line is silly. As for comparing P1 and 2 to 3 and 4, it's just a matter of aesthetics. P3 and 4 have much better mechanics and are a lot easier to get into and play than P2, but P2 has one of the most interesting stories I've read in a game, especially Innocent Sin, which really actively explores the psychological themes of the series. I imagine the future games will be a happy medium of the two concepts, perhaps Social Links outside of high school? Balancing an adult work life, social life, personal issues and demon-hunting career could be just as engaging, if not moreso, than sticking to the high school formula. There's a LOT of directions they could take the concept and the engine it's built upon, so I wouldn't worry that they'll get lazy with it and start churning out self-same games.

Update 19![]() First things first, let us see what this "password" thingamajig is all about. ![]() The password was set. ![]() And it was wrong, but this one is right. ![]() And thus it is set. Let's see what was provided. ![]() Oooh, a Slime! Useful. Good fusion fodder. Good set of skills. ![]() And then we have to pay to summon it, as a regular compendium entry. ![]() It seems that the Slime is a Kabbalistic entity this time ![]() ![]() Let's fuse it with Hua Po. The Goblin might be a good choice. ![]() Though it can be fused with Koppa Tengu for a Sandman. Eh, I think I would rather have the Goblin. ![]() And of course, York has a new gun now. It can shoot lightning. That'll be useful, as it will be seen in the near future. ![]() ![]() Also, more and more sources. ![]() Let's see what is down coming this way. ![]() Oh, no biggie. Just a Strike Team member taking a nap. ![]() Oh. Well, poo poo. Anyways, nothing we can do about it at the moment, let's let him lie there, York only carries corpses when accompanied by someone else, it seems. ![]() And a first class II forma. We'll see what that can make later. ![]() Down there it is still a wartorn field. Must be pretty high in the caves to allow for those airplanes. Unless again, those are just illusions. ![]() Poltergeist: "No thanks. I'm a Dark demon, after all. Everyone knows you can't talk to Dark demons." And he is an rear end in a top hat. ![]() That clearly led to nowhere in particular, so let's go down this other way, being near a save terminal must indicate that there IS something of interest in this particular side. ![]() And so there is. No corpse on that fork, anyways. ![]() Chickenghost provides yet another thing. ![]() And Hua Po does as well, so they can be safely made fusion fodder. ![]() Oh my, a fork in the road. We'll see where they both lead, but first, NEW CONVERSATIONS. ![]() Angel: "When I catch sight of the full moon, my heart is bound in some inexplicable, profound emotion..." ![]() Angel: "I find myself in agreement." ![]() Goddamn worthless. ![]() Well, poo poo. It's miniboss time! Also on Viddler ![]() Demon: "When the time comes, we'll storm the earth and massacre the humans!" ![]() And after that rather brief conversation, he attacks. It's not a particularly easy fight, but considering York's new gun, it is actually easier than the very first Oni encounter. ![]() Hell yes, Electric Shock. Onis are weak against electricity. I guess it's due to their iron clubs, but I am not sure. In any case, the Oni is screwed now. Though, they can still beat the poo poo out of someone. ![]() But in the mean time, hitting the Oni in his weak spot is satisfying. ![]() Slime levels up a couple of times, and then it changes the ice spell for something slightly less useful for coop attacks, but it doesn't matter. ![]() Slime's source is appreciated, though. ![]() ![]() And then it dies. Thankfully. ![]() ![]() Strike Team: "The demons are getting stronger... Plus, it seems like some of them are working together. We can't let our guard down. Oh yeah... I found some forma lying around. You can have a few. " ![]() Strike Team: "Listen, if it gets too much for you, go back to Irving and have him tune up your equipment. That's what the forma are there for... Might as well use 'em. " Well that was rather succesful. Even if a demon died. ![]() Archangel: "Hm... Well, what's the harm in having a little chat? Though to be perfectly honest, I don't expect that we'll get on very well... Hrmmm... I've had the strangest feeling ever since you and I met." ![]() Archangel: "Mmm... I'll grant that the old nerves have been singing ever since I came to this world. Thanks for that. I feel much calmer now. Humans don't seem to have ceased quarreling amonsts each other since days of old. Even now, when they would be best served acting as one, some of them refuse to abandon their conflicts." ![]() Seems like the options there are law, chaos and neutral. Logically, the Archangel would like the lawful option. ![]() Archangel: "I'd hope a day will come when everyone could get on with one another as equals. Ah, so you wish to negotiate with me. Very well!" ![]() Unfortunately, it is slightly higher level than York, so item it is. ![]() ![]() So... It ripped its own wings off? What? That must not have been pleasant. ![]() And after a bunch of grinding, it is FUSION TIME. Once again. ![]() ![]() Goblin: "Name's Fairy Goblin. Nice meetin' ya." ![]() Maybe if the Slime had been not allowed to change Bufu to Heat Wave, then he Goblin would probably have a decent spell. Instead of just physical skills. Oh well. And Tarukaja, as well. Eh. ![]() Sandman: "Only good manners for me to introduce myself, eh? My name's Sandman. You'll know me by my big sack. Say, sonny, can you do me a favor? Hm... I've heard my share about humans, but you're a friendly one. All righty, let's get right down to business. It's like I told ya before, this here bag is us Sandmen's signature. It's more important than you can prob'ly imagine, sonny. Me, I you can never be too careful, so I carry a buncha spares. But ya se... A pal o'mine got a hole in his bag... I let him borrow my spare for now. But it doesn't like that son of a gun plans to return it... I'm not keen on reminding him, and anyway I don't know where he's got to. " ![]() ![]() Note: That means "find him in a random encounter". In my first playthrough I meant that meant "find another map-standing Sandman". ![]() And then, if you talk to him without the bag, he has this to say. ![]() Sandman: "Fate and karma are all tangled up in this world. If ya see a Sandman and talk to him... Odds are that'll be the Sandman I lent my bag to. Don't look for a giftwrapped solution, sonny. You get out what you put in." And yet another new one, Angel! And not in a full moon this time! Let's see what it's got to say. ![]() Angel: "Oh, I'll play along. But I expect that you'll not let me down. I'll get to the heart of things and ask your first impression of me. Hm... How best to ask...?" ![]() Well poo poo, none of the options looks pleasant. Hell it does NOT like any of the options. I checked. ![]() Angel: "Harumph! You'll soon emit a stronger and more pungent odor than a durian's!" ![]() ![]() Yes, it is! A tomato is DEFINITELY a fruit. ![]() ![]() Gallagher fan, it seems. And it attacks. In the next turn the other angel is approached, maybe it didn't hear the previous conversation. Or not get insulted by being compared to a tomato. ![]() Angel: "It's all well and good to meet a human, but quite another to have him engage you in conversation." ![]() Angel: "Are you being modest or did you genuinely want to have a chat with me? Ahahah... Well, why didn't you say so in the first place? Now you have my full attention..." ![]() Angel: "I do not shy from battle, as you can see, and I have no intentions of losing to a man. " ![]() ![]() Smooth, York. Smooth. (Note, none of the options pleased the angel). ![]() ![]() And of course, battle ensues. Oh well. No angelic companions for York yet. ![]() ![]() Next: going back to the ship AND then going through that door there. And hopefully recruiting more goddamn creatures.

About the Slime's compendium entry... It's not that the Slime is Kabbalistic. The game is implying that all demons are transferred from the higher-up, more spiritual world to the lower, material world. In Slime's case, it's incomplete, so it does not physically manifest properly. This whole thing, of course, has further implications. The games are very subtle about this, but I'll say it outright now: demons, be they Law, Chaos, Neutral, Dark, or Light, all emanate from the Great Will/YHVH/God. In SMT1, Lucifer alludes to this in the Chaos ending by stating that was part of YHVH that was deliberately cast off. Basically, SMT thus consists of YHVH playing a morality game with other parts of himself. This is why you can never win against the big man: the very things you use to beat him are literally other pieces of him, and he's kind of like some ultimate universal starfish. Are all angels this annoyingly particular, or just this bottomless bondage slave variety?

Funny enough, regarding the tomato, the angel was talking about it in terms of cooking. Hence the "not a fruit" comment being paired with "tasteless" (they are more like a vegetable than a fruit when it comes to cooking), and the discussion of how bad a durian smells. I have no idea why she would object to being called a watermelon though in a cooking context. She must not like the seeds!

A lot of Law and Chaos demons are prone to giving you choices like that where your'e screwed no matter what if you're not the same alignment as them.

What happens if they ask and you are the same alignment? I confess to not really bothering to memorize the patterns of these demon conversations.
