Macca Beam is considered non-elemental in attribute so there's no way to mitigate its harmful money-eating effect except defeating the user. So like it or not if you see a Preta, shot to kill immediately! edit: beaten

I still keep the save around and can test it-- A single hit of either Macca or Wastrel beam reduces me to either 50,000 or 0 or 1 Macca, with no regularity as to which. When I first started the game, my friend 'sharked (Well, Action Replay, but still) that file to give it max-9s Macca, because that style of grinding is bad game design no matter what, and I'll have no truck with it. Having spent as much as I have, it still starts with 98. And it's not an anti-cheating measure either, because I made it through the whole game normally-- The Macca change code bypasses that one.

Can demons use Macca Beam even when they're still unknown? I don't think it ever happened to me, but a Macca Beam out of nowhere seems like the kind of trick this game would love.

I guess they couldn't be bothered to program in a version of it that would work on CPU-controlled demons. Or they figured it would be too hard to make it worth using and not overpowered. The only good thing about Macca Beam is that you can't run into anything that has it unless you specifically go looking for them (well, except Pretas). Which is great, unless you want the items/forma that those demons drop. And you probably do, so you're still screwed.

Update 30![]() Well, that is... what? Someone encased in carbonite? I don't understand. ![]() Crew: "Better keep a low profile, or there's no telling what they'll do to you..." ![]() Oh my, it is a she, and she gets a portrait! As in, OFFICIAL portrait! That means she is important! ![]() And that we had seen her before. ![]() zelening_A"Is the Red Sprite intact!? Then at least one of our ships can still move! The Elve, unfortunately, was shipwrecked. We were attacked by demons. Before I knew it... I was caught and brought here. I tried sending a distress signal, in the hopes that survivors on the Elve could send help, but... " ![]() Otherwise the mission would not invlve rescuing the hypothetical survivor. ![]() "Still, it was very noble of you, barging into a demon's lair..."![]() Success? I guess Zelenin's life has been confirmed, but there is no way to return, as both are trapped. ![]() ![]() "Oh... How awful! The demons here are monstrous! They've been torturing the other crewmen to death."![]() To be fair, York has not encountered demonic torturers. Only crazy demon assholes. And unhelpful ones. And aggressive ones. But not torture people. ![]() ![]() "You're right. We won't find a way back to Earth without relying on demons... It makes perfect sense, logically. But emotionally, it's... less simple. Anyway, let's put our heads together and think of a way out of our situation. What can we do with what we have?"![]() So far? Nothing. The door is not unlockable with the current things. ![]() "What else...?"![]() Conveniently, there is a hidden door! ![]() Excellent! Escape! ![]() Orrr... Not. ![]() Demon: "But I haven't been given the order to experiment on you yet! Wait in your own cell!" ![]() And then he kicks York back to the cell. ![]() Zelenin stays there. But there is something new! ![]() A new event! ![]() ![]() That does not sound pleasant. ![]() ![]() Could it be Norris inside? ![]() ![]() ![]() So, he killed the voice inside? ![]() Or... Is getting killed by it? ![]() ![]() Or maybe he became the Joker. ![]() "We're at the mercy of the demons. There's nothing we can do to fight back. "![]() "Me? Use the Demon Summoning Program!? Ridiculous! I could never! You may say I might not need to use it, but it's better to have for an emergency... But I tell you if that emergency happens, I'd sooner die! "![]() "I'm sory for snapping at you. It's the stress talking. You're right, of course. There's no telling what might happen. All right. I'll take it... In case of emergency. Though I hold out hope that I won't have to use it. "![]() It seems that this bunch does not instantly slaughter. That is good news, there might be some more survivors that can be saved, unlike what happened with Jimenez. ![]() ![]() Well, that was conveniently timed just after Zelenin is given the tool that might allow her to defend herself. On the other hand, how can she SEE the demons? I was under the impression that the demons were only visible through the program. And Arthur certainly was not near enough to the other ships to distribute it there. Jimenez somehow managed to shoot invisible things well enough to not die while the rest of his crew did. Zelenin seems to be able to detect them. Strange. ![]() Oh my, the door is opened! ![]() Demon: "Hey, new guy! Master Mitra be calling you! Hope ya ready to die!" ![]() ![]() Damnit. ![]() ![]() Demon: "If ya wanna live to tomorrow, if ya wanna make the pain stop, don't ya think of doin' nothin'! Now walk! Get movin'!" ![]() ![]() Well, poo poo. ![]() Huh, something is detected there. ![]() That must be Mitra. ![]() ![]() The decor is once again changed. Update 31![]() Nothing ventured, nothing gained. So let's see what is behind the golden door. ![]() A bunch of hanging... Crucified... People? ![]() Well, screw you, Bifrons. RUDENESS SHALL HAPPEN! ![]() ![]() The screen rumbles for a second or two, and then the big honcho himself appears. ![]() ![]() Ayup. That is Mitra. Notice the zodiac symbols on his... stone? ![]() "A good omen before our attack... Tell me, human, what is your name?"![]() Yeah. Being rude. ![]() ![]() 20 HP damage. Could have been worse, I guess. ![]() "Why don't you give in now and identify yourself?"![]() Defiance is the only choice! Or not. ![]() ![]() Maybe? ![]() But no, York's identity is made clear by someone else. Who did it? No one knows. Maybe Norris? He did advance first. ![]() "...Who was the one that opened his mouth without my leave? It seems he needs to be disciplined further."![]() Curiosity killed the cat, but it seems that in this case, it killed the crew member. ![]() "Such oddities... You promise love greater than the stars, but when rejected, you curse their name. It is as if fate itself compels you to kill those you love. Simply putting such mysterious creatures to death would be a terrible waste."![]() ![]() So, according to Mitra, the demons come BEFORE man? That seems to be a bit at odds with how they are portrayed elsewhere in the series, being formed by human emotion. Or something. I forget. Does not matter. "And now you have grown in number succifient to eat the planet into ruin, as though you owned it. What has driven you that far? If you know, I'm very eager to learn."![]() Let's go with this one. Sounds like it is a passable answer, seems to me like the ability to acquire and transmit knowledge is a good explanation. ![]() "Did you mean intelligence...? Surely not! That power alone cannot eradicate a species so brutally! "![]() Seems it was not a satisfying answer. ![]() "But at this rate our war will... No. It cannot be stopped any longer. We will change it! It will change! We will rise forth! The world will change... Isn't that so, men!?"![]() ![]() "That is why we extended our protection to the humans. Why were those days lost? The humans, the planet... All belonged to us and us alone!"![]() ![]() "York? Do you fear us, our shape? Because you needn't worry. I can be fearsome when angered, but I am a patient demon by nature. Why, depending on your attitude, I may well recruit you. As I did with these men..."![]() ![]() Well that is more than moderately creepy. Maybe they are all dead? ![]() "I put that question to all of you on board that wondrous ship. "![]() Uh, clearly not. Maybe he wants to know all. Does he know what can change the nature of a man? ![]() "Those are the choices. Discuss amongst yourselves and return with your answer. If you join me, realize that you won't be treated badly. In fact..."![]() Well, that is a better offer than being experimented on On the other hand, being experimented on probably is part of the deal. ![]() "And remember, return to me when you have an answer!"![]() Demon: "Ring this when you want to come back here and we'll come for you!" ![]() ![]() ![]() Oh boy! It is voting time! ![]() ![]() What are York's priorities?

Selfishness is a terrible sin, and so obviously one cannot choose to value only oneself. The question then is whether one can truly value both oneself and one's friends equally. I would suggest this is impossible and indeed not at all necessary. In truth valuing one's friends above yourself creates an environment in which they in turn value you above themselves, making the whole stronger than the sum of its parts. Also saying My Friends will both piss off Mitra for not being what he wants to hear while also not being a dumb non-answer like both is that he will RIGHTLY mock as such if I recall. In fact if you like neutral choices like let's be real that obviously is get ready to choke down a lot of mockery, because while the demons may have a lot of scorn for Law they've also got even more insults ready for not making a choice at all.

A plea: If you're wanting to be contrarian and not get the obviously correct and proper path through this game, at least pick Neutral so you get to remember the game semi-fondly instead of suffering through the consequences of Atlus realizing they needed a third path the week before shipping and whipping one together out of spare assets, duct tape, and sub-Demikids storytelling. The Neutral ending might be dumb but it's worlds better than the gameplay and story choices they made with the Chaos path, where Atlus takes a giant poo poo on your head and leaves you wondering why everyone who picked Neutral or Law liked the game. Our York is a professional, kickass soldier and that includes being willing to take point or jump on a grenade to save the squad and the mission; My Friends (I daresay there'd be no argument on this choice if the option had been written as My Comrades or My Team) is the only reasonable answer. He's doing so because the crew and survivors are the only slice of humanity who CAN speak to them, and he specifically is the only one who can speak to Mitra.
