Well, what can I say? It is time to start this one. ![]() What is Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey? Well, it is the last mainline SMT title, it is also a pretty drat good dungeon crawler for the DS. It does not really follow any plot points from the previous entries in the series (and all things considered, neither did Nocturne, really). Still, it is the latest, it is one of the few SMT titles that DON'T take place in Japan, and, well, we'll see. Table of Contents Update 1: Plotdumps! Actually reserving this post for cast and details. Commander Gore: American, leader of the mission. Apparently well liked by the crew. Pretty drat optimistic about the mission. ![]() First Lieutenant Zelenin: Russian. Stationed on the Elve, Science officer of some sort. Technobabble ahoy! ![]() Main Character:American. He is the main character. Thus, like all traditional SMT main characters, a mute. ![]() ![]() Jimenez: Hot headed, American. Doesn't seem to care much about respect or authority, but will do what is asked of him as long as he gets paid.

No kidding. This game abuses it's player, and I have Stockholm syndrome for it.

Couldn't get into this game at all. Old-school JRPGs simply don't do it for me anymore. The premise of the story was great, though, so I'll be bookmarking this thread.

Oh good, at least someone's doing this. Tried playing it some but got tired of endless demon juggling and indecisiveness about which ones I should stick with and which ones to fuse, especially since now there's aligments thrown into the mix as well. I guess Persona is a bad starting point in that regard since there's a lot less choice overall, especially in 3 and 4. Didn't bother me as much in Devil Survivor though, probably because of easier character customization and the fact that you only need to plan out for a single battle at a time. Not that it'd matter since I would've quit out of frustration in latter dungeons anyway based on what I've heard of them.

I still haven't beaten it. I am at the final boss and realize I am in need of some heavy grinding or else some great strategy that eludes me. There's no loving way I'm replaying this game until I beat it the first time, but grinding is sooooo loving slow--there's no handy exp bags for me to exploit, so far as I know.

Ah, Strange Journey. The first game of it's kind I'd ever played (first person dungeon crawler), it sure is... something. Generally not as hard as it gets credit for, though there are some bullshit segments we have to look forward to! Game's a lot of fun and this should be fun to follow. Already can't wait to see some fusing and recruiting.

Oh, this is such a good game. I had so much fun the entire time through. I just really, really dug the Jules Verne with demons thing it had going. Awesome to see you doing this.

Love this game. Too bad Atlus sucks and just churns out more awful date sim Persona games instead of stuff like this.

You brave soul, I love this game so much. Will there be a chance to donate some demons/codes to you, or are you going to only make your own monsters?

They'd be expensive, but if you really want to see the ending, nothing helps curb stomp an end boss like a few Jihads.

There are two different final bosses. I didn't have too many problems with the one you're more likely to meet, a few retries were needed though.

I began this one just after SMT Devil Survivor (only one I have finished), but quickly lost interest in dungeon crawling. Great premise and sense of exploration, though, so I'll be following.

Azure_Horizon posted:I am interested to see how this SMT spinoff unfolds. There is middle ground in this debate. Let's get one thing clear: Strange Journey was originally conceived as SMT4. So what happened? Basically, Atlus Japan, due to the success of Atlus USA, realized that there is an international market for SMT. Thus, Kaneko changed the name and the setting away from Tokyo. The SMT games only get a number if they are set in Tokyo. No really. That's the entire reason it's not SMT4 on the box: it's not set in Tokyo, in order to give the game more international appeal. So, if for some reason you're one of those people who think SMT cannot be mainline because it's not set in Tokyo, then it's not SMT4. Sort of kind of, kind of like how this game was envisioned as sort of kind of SMT4. --- ...So what is my point? Less of this Persona dating sim bullshit, more of Strange Journey. Enemy Search in Sector H works pretty well actually if you're feeling weak. There are blips that spawn in the general vicinity of the last boss. The real trick to the last boss is to not be shy about using items and things like that. This is the best game by the way, and Law is the best path. You're free to disagree if you'd like to be wrong but this time the Law people in the story just kinda own. Tallgeese posted:...So what is my point? A bunch of people do not like the Law ending, but their objections are pretty short-sighted and fail to consider it in an objective manner. Plus the head Law guy is just awesome all the time (except in the Chaos path where they ruin his character in two sentences, but we can safely ignore that bit of bullshit). The Chaos guys are steadfast but simply not well-developed, and the Neutral started cool but gets really stupid really fast after a certain point, regardless of path. Well, those people would be wrong, but hey, what can I do? I would have provided a laundry list of reasoning to back the opinion, but I am trying not to spoil the game. If you want me to I will gladly oblige and show why exactly Law is superior in this game. Keep in mind that I am mainly referring to this game, Law is pretty badly presented in 2. The presentation in SJ is much improved, barring certain wrinkles once you hit endgame. Also, please edit the quote to cover the spoiler.

Oh hey this game. I like this game. Sometimes it's just bullcrap unfun and unfair, but other than that it's pretty enjoyable. On the topic of alignment chat, I've never really given that much thought to the alignments in this series, it's usually a question of who I like best. And I've never really liked the Law characters in this game. Or the Chaos characters. But Neutral has Anthony, who is totally rad.

I think this is probably my least-favourite game in the Megaten canon (bar IMAGINE). Which still puts it ahead of most other games out there. I think I stopped playing mainly because I hate grinding for enemy drops to make items and weapons. Any game that has that eventually ends up trying my patience before long. Which probably explains why I hate MMOs now that I think about it.Feinne posted:It certainly would be nice if the next Persona game was a hybrid of what was great about the recent entries' gameplay but back to being a bit more like the earlier entries. I just wish Shoji Meguro would get back to the outstanding soundtracks we heard in Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga. I liked some of the stuff from P3&4, but on the whole, I loved the earlier games' OSTs. There's some great stuff in P3&4, like Backside Of The TV or The Snow Queen, but the J-Pop gets a little wearing after a while, y'know?
