....seriously? I come back to the computer and see there's 214 unread posts on this thread and they're all about NERD DRAMA? Christ, I thought something interesting might have come up in the game that we hadn't seen before, or there was a serious bug that eats computers, or an announcement or clarification of the vague screwedness non-alpha adopters are going to get when new content rolls out... Nope. Nerds yellin' about nerds who yell at video games. gently caress. e: 219. Still, point stands. Allen Wren fucked around with this message at Nov 21, 2011 around 21:16 |

Regardless of who is right or wrong, this is a completely inappropriate forum to air these grievances. I know the whole 'indie cred' thing stems from Notch's easy availability via Twitter, but this kind of unfiltered ranting is only serving to undermine the community more. He's fracturing an already shaky, drama-laden internet community with he-said she-said, and quite frankly, is the kind of behavior that proves the whole "a bunch of nerds who don't know how to run a company," comment. This whole thing screams of growing pains from taking a small indie company into the big time. Hosting a conference of this size is a huge undertaking, and being unprepared can mean huge logistical nightmares. It sounds like there are a lot of little details that fell through the cracks- reviewing content before presentation, media coaching/preparation and fully setting everyone's expectations for conference behavior and rules and party logistics. Maybe the YOGS guys are primadonnas or dicks, maybe they were unprepared for the con and having to be personable and live on stage, and maybe they are being man-babies about the whole thing. (In seeing them post on SA, they seem pretty drat chill so i'm not sure I buy it) Regardless, Notch shouldn't be slamming them on social media sites with such vitriol, it is just going to serve to further alienate the fanbase between two camps. A ton of people did get started playing this game because of the Yogscast. Not to further clutter this post with marketing speak, but it seems like he's trying to castrate his biggest brand advocates.

To be fair though, it's nice that this explosion in content is something that you can take or skip over (once it's done). I've loved keeping up with this thread in all of its incarnations, but I absolutely love the recent slow down as compared to months ago. I remember when being busy for a few days meant I'd come back to find 60 new pages and knowing, even though skipping them means skipping screenshots of someone's awesome rainbow penis fountain buried deep within, it was just too much. Don't like drama skip drama (later) and enjoy piston penis erection machine when posted.

PS: "nobody else got paid" is pithy and all, but is probably not the phrase you'd want to weaponize when your company is seeing an enormous spike in sales thanks in some small part to the event and its attractions. Wow, I normally have no opinion on this poo poo but that crossed my "rear end in a top hat manchild" threshold. gently caress him. There is zero reason he couldn't have contacted yogscast in private and aired grievances about how he interpreted their behaviour instead of blowing up on twitter. What an egotistical prick.

I think their side is going to be "We were asked to make something to show for the con so we asked if we were going to get paid" which isn't unreasonable to ask when they are acting as live entertainers for a conference that is taking $450,000 in ticket sales. Maybe they were prima donnas and dicks about it but asking about getting paid to promote someone elses business doesnt make you an rear end in a top hat.

For a couple of guys (and gal) who just run a YouTube channel and website rather than a multi-millions dollar company, their response to the whole thing is a hell of a lot more savvy on the PR and social media marketing front. Put out a response promising further explanation, stay quiet until the initial vitriol and drama calms down, and (in theory) prepare a diplomatic response addressing Notch's comments and community backlash.

I'm sure they contributed their share, but you can't jump in while the game is starting to spike and then say everything that came after was thanks to you in equal share.

Anyways, I don't think its unreasonable to expect to get paid to go to a convention and run a panel. There was no mention of extortion, so I assuming that wasn't the case and that they just wanted a reasonable fee for their time and services. Notch was probably just upset that they had the audacity to not go along with the others and make him money for free. Also, I'm very curious about the age of the kid that they dropped the F-bomb at. I'm going to laugh when it turns out that the kid was like 15. My bet is that the nerds running a company thing came about when they realized how obviously unprofessional the convention was being run. -edit I know this stuff is inane, but it's still fun to discuss.
