My brother as an ex harley mechanic wanted to do this for my engine. He says he has a couple CV carbs. Also, STOP MAKING PROGRESS, you're making me look bad. It's too god damned cold to work on mine.

The car just needs an anti-gravity-filter.

Alright. The way the manifold fit next to the generator made one side much longer than the other and was also interfering with the distributor, so...

Up and over. It looks like a long way, but it is actually a shorter distance than the stock piece. It will fit right in the center, just above the generator.

IndieCar 2013: You Probably Haven't Heard Of It

Part of me was hoping you were going to go insane and mount the carbs on an obscenely long intake, like roof-level or up on the hood or some poo poo. Of course I'm pretty sure you'd have massive fuel pooling issues and it'd just never run for poo poo, so probably a good idea not to.

I'm finding it hard to believe that these pictures are taken with an iPhone and not a 10 year old Nokia.

How long until you get it to run?

Also, what the fuel pump situation with those carbs? I had a old Honda CB motorcycle and I'm pretty sure the fuel was gravity fed. How is that gonna work?

I welded then up today. I need to remount the ignition coil, generator, spark plug wires and fan housing. Maybe this week. It is indeed, gravity fed, but the gas tank is on higher ground so I just need to shorten the fuel line. Probably.

Painted wheels. I still have to do the back. I used some left-over Acrylic Polyurethane Enamel from work. I painted the side with real-deal olive drab paint, so it looks less whack than before.

Tires are brand new. The fronts have like single digit miles on them.

I was more concerned with age than mileage. I've got a 47-year old spare tire that I'm pretty sure never came out of the tub until I removed it last year to replace the gas tank. I'm certainly not gonna use it.

There was an article a few years back about Carrol Shelby pulling the original AC/Shelby Cobra out of the garage. Had a picture of the old man with the steering wheel at full opposite lock, back tires smoking, and the writer commented that none of the four tires matched, and were probably last off the car when JFK was president...

They are probably brand new from Coker tire.

That's my main concern about today's trip. Although the vehicle has been driven no worries all over the place, the company that made the tyres that are on it shut down in '97. You can bet I'll be taking it easy.

Yup. Exactly right. I have been using a stand for some lights to hold the hood up, but today I made a holder, hinge thingy from an old ladder. I didn't bother to take a picture.

Work in progress.

Hopefully something like this.

Bump for a question:

I gave up on the motorcycle carbs and put the old carb back on. I am having an issue with the idle. On start-up, it idles fine, but if I give it some gas, it wants to stall. I can keep the engine running if I keep on the gas pedal, but it won't idle on it's own. I tried speeding up the idle adjustment and it doesn't seem to help. If I keep the choke most of the way closed, it helps too. Too little fuel? Timing off? Any ideas, goon friends?

Is it getting that extra squirt of fuel when you "give it some gas?" Secondary jets could be clogged.

If you let it stall from idle, does the exhaust smell like exhaust, or fuel?

I had this issue on m Ghia, if the carb is old/ original then you may have wear around where the butterfly axis goes through the carb. It'll idle and drive but after giving some gas it wont idle and you have to have fun with 3 pedals and 2 feet

Of would do this no matter how high I set the idle or what I did with anything related to the carb. Its because there's an air leak and its bringing in air the carb doesn't know about.

The only remedy is a new bolex/solex carb, or maybe taking it apart filling the hole and redrilling it. Sadly cabs are like tripled in price in 5-7 years.

I'm guessing an air leak as well. Not familiar with acvw at all but is everything post carbs in order like gaskets and such?

Ok guys in order of response:

Godholio, the secondary are clean, and it seems to be getting enough fuel.

MrYenko, the exhaust smell like fuel.

Tater_salad, that sounds like what I am dealing with. A friend of a friend has a shelf full of Solex carbs, I may try to bum one from him.

Holdbrooks, I just checked the gaskets and tightened everything down.

If the exhaust smells like fuel, it might be flooding out, instead of going lean from an unintentional air bleed. I'm not familiar with those carbs, but maybe a leaky accelerator pump, or a missized/damaged idle fuel jet/needle?

I don't know dick about this carbs (and only slightly more about carbs in general) but be careful about overtightening. Aluminum bends and will break. And getting it fixed is expensive.
