Game/IC Thread Over Here It has been one thousand years since the last of the golden tyrants was slain. One thousand years of pain and bloodshed as the chosen of the elements turned upon each other, seeking to claim the crowns of their fallen masters. One thousand years of brother feuding against brother, in an endless struggle to command all the peoples and treasures of the world. An age of warlords. An Age of blood. An age that is now only a memory. If only you could return there, draw one sweet breath of life as it was then. But time is not so kind. Today, it is the age of sorrow. The age of madness. It is the age of death. ![]() Without warning, and without mercy the contagion swept the world. Nine in ten are dead. No class, no creed, no cult or kingdom was safe. It could not be cured, it could not be contained, it could scarcely be understood. As the bodies piled high empires crumbled, nations vanished - the gods themselves fell silent to the world's cries for mercy. Then the cries fell silent, for there was no hope. And you, exalt, with all your holy might could do little more than survive. And indeed, you are still alive. The sun still rises and falls, the earth stands firm beneath your feet... ...and the winds carry cries of people who need heroes. The plague is over. The Shogunate is over. Mankind isn't. In this new age where violence and chaos reign, the world waits for salvation. ![]() So then, this is a recruitment thread for a Post-Apocalyptic Adventure campaign, using Exalted 2e and all applicable errata. It will take place in the central south, which like most of the world has descended into chaos. You are terrestrial exalts who grew up and lived in some part of the first great Dragon Blooded civilization. The contagion destroyed that life, and left you adrift in the aftermath. You are alive, you are powerful, you are the only hope for the future. Contrary to the title, you are not required to be a martial artist and I am not demanding a complete elemental set. There may not even be five of you! However, given the setting you'd best know at least one way to harm things (either you knew it before, or you drat well learned fast) and diversity is always nice. If interested, build an Outcaste Dragon Blooded, with the following changes - Breeding does not cost extra. The contagion didn't give a square gently caress who your mother's uncle's brother's stepdad was. Even the finest vintage of noble blood can be left wandering when their nation vanishes out from under them. Artifact behaves as though you were a dynast. At a time less removed from the wonders of the first age, all manner of magical trinkets are still common around the world. Furthermore, dead men need no jade. Even if you weren't that well off before everything went to hell, the ratio of loot to looters has tipped sharply in your favour. You can learn Celestial Martial Arts as though you were an immaculate monk, but using the Shogunate awakening charms, or by investing in the appropriate backgrounds to find a teacher of first age styles. The Temple itself does not yet exist, so the styles they invented are off limits. Everything else is fair game. Finally, you will start with 25 experience. Recruitment over, OOC thread begin! New houserule - Willpower and virtues cost 4xp per dot to raise, flat price. Bookmarks: Then they pissed off the Paladin... - The dawn of the longest day. Uncivilized Engineering - Spelunking starts here. A robot destroyed. - And promptly forgotten. Request hint, receive hint, ignore hint. - And dive headlong into the underworld. Fivepoles.txt - Ghosts defeated. Crunch - Some consequences drop in. Shoot the river. - How Sal says hello. Morning after dumb - An expertly executed waste of time. Valliant Submission - Much Ado about nothing. It's all very technical... - Infiltration begins. Jerah arrives. Teahouse - Let's talk more! Going for a learned sorceror with a martial bent, proud scion of a great house now fallen into ruin, who is aware of the thousands of wonders of the First Age and Shogunate that are now unguarded and might fall into the wrong hands (i.e. Not his own).

I'm in: Wood-aspected Outcaste, taught by a construct he accidentally awakened. A mender of people and things. A maker. Seeks to save lives to make up for those that died for him. --- It was said in my village that the ruins nearby were cursed, and to venture near them would invite terrible misfortune on all who did so. I do not know if that is so, but my life thus far has certainly been marked by greater extremes of fortune than I could possibly have expected. When I was five, famine came for my mother. She was never particularly robust, and she gave a great deal of her food to my elder brother and myself. When I not much older, disease came for my father. I do not know by what miracle my brother and I survived, but he was by then old enough and strong enough to continue my father's work, and provided for me in addition to himself. I was always small and weak, and young besides, so I could not do much beyond keeping the house in order for him, which took little enough of my time. I took to exploring the ruins near my house- stories regarding treasure guarded by the curse filled my head, and I grieved enough for my parents that it seemed to me that the curse could not take much from me save my life. In return, I thought, I might find treasure with which to thank my brother, the way I could no longer thank my mother, my father, for all they gave, for- Excuse me. While I was small and weak, I have always been quick and nimble and clever also, and I soon discovered that such dangers as the ruins presented was solely due to their age, rather than any evident curse. One day, around the time I turned eleven, I found something to reward my efforts: a shard of jade, left behind when the previous occupants took their leave, so long ago. Not large, you understand- perhaps not even massing the same as an obol- but for those such as us, a treasure indeed. I returned home, showed my brother, and the look on his face and in his eyes when he saw it was worth far more than the jade. We traded the jade for probably less than it was worth, but it made us rich, by the standards of our village. We should have been more careful who we told about our access to such treasure. Somebody talked about it. We never told them not to, fools that we were. It was not long before my brother accompanied me on some of my forays, or at least followed when I found new accessways (as far as he could, as he was too large for some of the tunnels). One day, I found something that exceeded my wildest fevered imaginings- a statue of something roughly the shape of a man, seemingly carved of jade, fully ten feet tall. I had crawled through many dark and narrow places to find it, and ran home to tell my brother as fast as possible. He followed me back, with wild plans filling our heads about how we might go about converting this colossal find into fortune. When we returned, the cracks I had crawled through were gone; someone had widened them into passages, however tight, for large men. My brother and I followed the path to its destination, a large room holding the statue in an alcove. Many men, armed and equipped, stood there, ready to steal our prize from us. They said they would spare us if we left immediately, and my brother wanted to do so. I was young and foolish; I was not thinking. I shouted defiance at the thieves, called them vultures and worse, and for my troubles, would have received an arrow in the chest had my brother not taken delivery of it in my place. I watched my only family die, and faced my own death, without any help to be had anymore, struck immobile by shock. The men mistook my inaction for surrender, and took my knife and food, but left me alive. I cannot say what happened next. Next I recall, I was trying to staunch the flow of blood from my brother's chest with my shirt, my hands, with sheer force of will. When I realized he was dead, I wept, thinking I was truly alone in the world. I thought wrong. Something extraordinary had happened to me as I strove to save my brother's life, and what I had dismissed as a statue was much more, waiting for an Exalted master to serve. The creature of jade opened its eyes as I looked up at it, and watched me weep over the body of what had been, until then, my only remaining family. After it had watched me a while, it did something I could not have expected. It spoke. "Young master, why do you cry?" I explained, as best I could through my tears, my purpose there and what had happened, and that I did not understand why such a mighty creature called me master. (I did not yet understand, you see, what had happened to me, and that the period I could not remember coincided with my drawing of the Second Breath.) The creature told me that it was intended to teach and protect those such as myself, but that it had forgotten much, for it felt it was part of a much larger whole. I did not understand fully, but as the creature was now the only living being that showed itself to care about my existance, I spent time with it. It had forgotten much, about who made it, and why exactly, and most of its history besides. I named it Shard, as it was part of something larger. While he had forgotten much, Shard remembered many things also, and taught me how to wield the Essence that flowed through me, and all that I needed to make the best use of it. It taught me to heal the sick, and mend what was broken. It taught me to wield sorcerous powers, and how to bind my powers into objects, that others might use them. I spent many years learning these things in that place, and when I emerged, the world had changed. The village I was born in was empty, the townspeople all dead of the great disease that ravaged the land. I saw that the people were sick. I saw that the land was sick. I saw that the world was broken. I saw that the gods had sculpted me into a healer and a mender, and that they had done so that I might save the world I saw before me. I called Shard to follow, and set off to fulfill my destiny. vdate fucked around with this message at Aug 21, 2011 around 05:41 |

That will stay solar-style. It is very hard to claim and hold control over one dead man's house, let alone several. It will be assumed that whatever amount of manse you purchase is reasonably safe from tampering. So you won't have to be paranoid about guarding said house.

Two quick questions. Has the Scarlet Empress done her thing with the Imperial Manse where she appeared all across Creation and gave her victory speech? Any paticular type of character you're looking for thematically: Are we going for Big drat Dragonblooded Heroes who might occasionally go a bit crazy from Limit Break or the more selfish and corrupt dynast-a-likes who've been thrown into this post apocalyptic world and expected to lead?

There's been no such activity on the isle, and you have no reason to expect any future historic events to occur as they did or when they did. As a player and a character you need only be concerned with the wasteland. Thematic wise you can swing either way, ideally avoiding either extreme. It's a harsh enough time that even selfish motivations can still push you to form a team and go punch bad dudes. Your first meeting will occur ingame, so have put some options in for me to hook you with. You're someone who's lost a lot, probably even the last of something, and their something you'd like to preserve or restore. Could be as simple as your own life and comfort, or as far-reaching as the very substance of the world. And I may as well note now - currency isn't quite back in action yet on a large scale. Large enough settlements and fledgling warlords may have their own tokens of exchange in place, but we're a ways off from standardized coin and paper. So resources will represent less cash, more useful/tradeable goods. What exactly they are will be kept abstract for simplicity's sake, just putting it out there for flavour.

I wish we could get Dragon Armor, we're early enough in the timeline that we might still be able to find High First Age models.Mostly though, I think Dragon Armor looks really cool, but I couldn't really count on it given the setting. I can adjust my concept BTW if anyone wants, Dove can fit as an Air Aspect without too much tweaking, I just thought the reference was closer to Earth Aspect appearancewise.

Shucks, didn't see that. What if we can actually maintain it on our own?![]() Kesowa is an unassuming, grizzled veteran who has devoted his entire life to one goal: restoring what order and infrastructure he could. He has been around the entirety of the South as a one-man construction crew, rebuilding roads in disrepair, digging wells and building aqueducts and houses. In the process many towns and villages have given him gifts, such that he now has amassed a small fortune--not by seeking it, but simply by doing good. Some of it is simple technophilia--it gives him an excellent way to see new pieces of technology and repair them. Some of it is altruism, but he thinks more about communities and systems than individuals. Supreme Zarcus, Guardian of the Wastes ![]() War. War never changes. The Shogunate was a confederacy of dunces. One did not need to be a learned man to determine that much. For the first time in history, the Dragon-Bloods were given power beyond imagination, and what was done with it? It was the same as a world with no ruler; A war of all against all. The Terrestrials amassed power and then used it to war against each other. It was better to cast power aside rather than use it for such pathetic undertakings. Whether this is true or not is not important, because it is how Storm of Absolution, Air Exalted, Weapons Engineer of the First Age saw the world. It is why he retreated into the mountains and fathered a child, Zarcus, with her mortal beloved. It is also why he taught Zarcus nothing of war; He learned only languages, poetry, calligraphy, agriculture, and perhaps a tiny bit of physics. Even if he had, though, it would have made little difference. Eventually, a daimyo discovered Storm of Absolution's whereabouts and dispatched invisible assassins. They captured Zarcus and his mother. They would kill them if Absolution did not return to war, to repair the massive and depreciated weapons of the First Age. He said no twice, and they killed his wife. He did not say no a third time, for Zarcus's sake. Wishing to spare him the horrors of war, Zarcus's father forbid him from coming with him, and told him to wait until he could return. Zarcus Exalted alone on that mountain farm. He waited for his father to return. Before he could, he was discovered by the Infernal Declension Dirge. She whispered sweet half-truths in his ears, telling him she sought to bring down the Shogunate, and naive and trusting Zarcus listened to her. Little by little, she enticed him to more and more violent acts, and he became expert in the arts of war and subterfuge. They gathered an army and made siege on one of the last great strongholds of the Shogunate. Zarcus led the charge, cleaving through the gate itself with his scythe. Inside there were valuable first age treasures, but there were almost no warriors. The fortress had been converted to a hospital for plague victims. Zarcus stood, stunned and silent, as he heard Declension Dirge give the order to kill them all. As they rushed in, a lone warstrider emerged, the type that can no longer be constructed. Waves and waves of mortal men broke and died crashing against the thing. It cut entire swathes out of battalions. Dirge ordered Zarcus to kill the pilot. The Exalt leapt atop the warstrider and sheared open the cockpit. Seeing the back of the pilot, he was astounded; The plague looked to have nearly run its course in this man. Storm of Absolution turned around and looked Zarcus in the eye and told him, Please remember me. The memories of his father dispelled the charms of the Infernal, and as Storm of Absolution passed out from exhaustion, the last thing he saw was Zarcus fighting back against what was once his warband. Most of them fled; A few stayed and died. Only Declension Dirge knew what had truly transpired, and eventually, only she and he remained. Amongst the dust and corpses they stood several paces from one another, simply staring each other down. She spoke gently to him. "Zarcus, our enemies have cast an illusion upon you. That was not your father, just sorcery." Her power was great, and Zarcus was not powerful enough to defeat her enchantment. She truly convinced him that his father had not just spoken to him, and that it was a phantom. But it was not enough. The memories of his childhood were not illusions, nor were the memories of atrocities he committed. "Your evil is no illusion. I cannot tolerate it." Dirge was trapped; She could weave no more charms binding his mind without removing the one that made him disbelieve the sight of his father. Beaten by a dying old man, she sighed. "Then Zarcus, I suppose our relationship is at an end." She walked out past the threshold and into the wastes. Supreme Zarcus was torn for only an instant before he reached his decision. No, Demon! You are at an End! And that is how Supreme Zarcus came to wander the wastes, seeking to build a safe and civilized place for those wanting no part in neither violence nor evil. pre:Name: Supreme Zarcus

A_Raving_Loon posted:^ That is a good question. How shall it be answered? I wasn't seeing particularly much of a problem--it's not like, say, First Pulse style was invented yet either. A lot of the Terrestrial styles were invented Post-Contagion, in fact. I was just going to go with Kesowa developing those beginnings of a style himself to defend himself without seriously hurting people. As an alternative, a bunch of disillusioned looters during the Contagion could've developed a style based around killing with the detritus of the old world, specifically power lines.

Yes, it's just poorly described in the book. You still get 7 starting Charms, it's just that if you're a Celestial Martial Artist at the start of the game, you must have 2 already. I'm still debating if Dove should ever learn a Celestial Martial Art, but none of the canonical ones really resonate a whole lot with the kind of style I have going on in my head with her.

Alectai posted:Yes, it's just poorly described in the book. You still get 7 starting Charms, it's just that if you're a Celestial Martial Artist at the start of the game, you must have 2 already. Don't feel pressured to dive for the stars. Still plenty of fun to be had with a diverse line of worldly abilities. Take whatever path suits your fancy.

Alectai posted:Hey Zarcus, you do realize that "Five Charms" doesn't include your two Initiation Charms? This is false. John Chambers was quoted once as saying you got seven total, but this was confirmed as false more recently by Holden. I can find the quote of Holden saying that you only got five total, but that might take a while. CMA charms are more powerful than normal charms(so are the Enlightenment charms, for that matter). They take more XP to learn for a reason. John Chambers was quoted once as saying you got seven total, but this was confirmed as false more recently by Holden.

Fair enough then, I guess that counts in "Latest Errata" as well. So, our group's going to have transportation at the least, anywhere along the coast and up all but the tiniest rivers, Whirligigs are awesome like that (The lack of maintenence is a nice bonus). Now it's just a matter of getting awesome Dragon Armor for everyone, and we'll have an impressive five-man-band working for us in our efforts to SAVE CREATION!

Just an FYI, latest errata gives Dragon-Blooded 4 Favored Abilities, not 3.
|
| # ? Aug 21, 2011 13:13 |

Could I get a source on that? There is errata that says 4 free specialties for skills, seen nothing about favoured picks.

Whoops, my fault. Totally misread that. Yeah, 4 specialties, not 4 Favored Abilities.

Waking up to find men dragging him roughly from the remains of his family's house, demanding he tell them where the Artifacts and jade were safeguarded. He was a boy, youngest son of Grave Phoenix, and the only survivor of the household after the Contagion swept through the town his noble family administered for the daimyo. The chains around his wrists, legs and neck chafed, and galled his pride. The oppressive heat of the desert on the slave caravan, the sun beating down like a club. He bears it. His blood was that of Fire, after all. The heat should be nothing to him. He would make these dogs pay once his blood told true. A massive thing, tearing through the slavers, fire bursting from its hands as its feet crushed the bodies of the men like eggshells. Fire that stirred his own blood. Fire that wanted to burn. To consume. To be. Red-hot chains exploding away as he came into his own. The monster suddenly becoming a man, silver-haired and smirking. Finding his mother's bracers, and his father's weapons and armor. The hearthstone of the family Manse. All in the pile of loot the slavers had stolen from his home. A burning fury, coursing through him still. "Teach me. Teach me to fight like that." "Pfah. You're just a lizard. You can't fight like I do." "I don't care about that. Even my father couldn't shoot the way you do. Teach me how to do that." A strange gleam in the man's eye. "Perhaps... Perhaps you could learn that. It will be hard. And I will not be kind." A defiant jut to Salamander's jaw. "I don't care. I need to learn to use my father's repeaters to end the slave trade. It's not right." Silvermane, laughing. "So, the little lizard understands! Not so easy under the lash, is it, boy?" Salamander awoke, staring at the ceiling. al-Padin always told him that dreams had meaning. Now he dreamt of the beginning. He sighed. Change was coming. Something new. He went downstairs to check if there had been any messages in the night. He was starting to run low on supplies, and that last job had taken far more ammunition than he'd anticipated. He squinted at the sun, smiling slightly. It was going to be another hot one. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ pre:Shopping List Thing Learned XP Cost Training Time MadcapViking fucked around with this message at Mar 27, 2013 around 18:55 |

Cloud of Ebon Devils seems...not so useful if you're using Plasma Tongue Repeaters. You'd only have to reload once every ten shots(and if a combat is lasting even ten shots we're doing something horribly wrong). You'd be way better served by getting the First Martial Arts Excellency. The hearthstone bracers are kinda nice if you want to keep the Speed 3 shots--you lowered the speed on your punches twice though.

I got that statblock from another character who had the Bracers. The Repeater is normally Speed 5, though, so I already accounted for the bonus the Bracers give me, there. And as for Cloud of Ebon Devils, no it's not useful with repeaters, but it is necessary for Righteous Devil Form. First MA Excellency was kind of a crucial oversight, though. Thanks!

I wish we could get Dragon Armor, we're early enough in the timeline that we might still be able to find High First Age models.
