I bought an Obscura hoodie when I saw them last week and the zipper is already broken  The way I see it buying band merch is as much about giving the band you like money as getting something to wear, buying it at a show is the best way to make sure they get the money from it.

going back to the metal shirts discussion, the best shirts are Sonata Arctica shirts. They're literally just wolf shirts with the Sonata Arctica logo pasted on front.
