Fighting games are cool, flat-top buzzcuts are radical, punching five heads off one guy is gnarly, rainbow ninjas are bodacious. If you want to talk about the sickest, most extreme one-on-one ![]() Mortal Kombat (or Mortal Kombat 9, or Mortal Kombat 2011, whatever you prefer) is a 2.5D versus fighting game, developed by Netherrealm Studios (formerly Midway Chicago) and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It is a reboot of the Mortal Kombat series, featuring classic characters, stages and fatalities alongside a revamped 2D fighting system, complete with 2v2 tag fights and online play. Since its release in April it has received numerous glowing reviews, featured prominently at several high-profile fighting game/esports events and sold in excess of three million copies. Most importantly, it doesn't suck. The game has been refused classification in Australia. Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition is a compilation re-release containing the original game, the four DLC characters and all the DLC costumes/fatalities. Additionally, the NA version comes with a digital redemption code for the Mortal Kombat: Inspired By The Warriors soundtrack and the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie (the cool one), available via Playstation Store/Xbox Live Zune. It'll be released in North America on February 28 and in Europe on March 2. Need some reasons to pick this game up? Here ya go!
Wanna play online? You'll need a Kombat Pass! The Kombat Pass is a one-time redemption code that allows you to play online. It comes free with every new copy of the game; if you rent or buy second-hand you'll get a free online trial period of a few days but once it expires you'll have to buy a Kombat Pass for the one-time fee of $10. Sucks, but that's the way of the future, I guess. Aussies, do you wanna import MK9? Go ahead! Order from your international retailer of choice, it aint a big deal - worst case scenario, it's stopped at customs (extremely unlikely) and you get a $200 fine. A word of warning - PS3 users will need to create a second PSN account that matches the region of their disc if they want to buy/redeem DLC. It's an easy process, you can find detailed instructions here. Download the compatibility packs! Every time Netherrealm makes a new DLC character available in the store they also release a free compatibility update pack that allows people who haven't bought the new characters to fight against them online. Unfortunately these updates are completely optional, and matches between someone with all the compatibility packs and someone without all the compatibility packs are prone to regular desync/disconnect issues which are a complete pain in the arse. For your own sake and the sake of those around you, download all the compatibility packs! They even come with free costumes! (All of this stuff is included on the Komplete Edition disc, so if you buy that version you won't need to worry.) DLC RUNDOWN
![]() Mortal Kombat is also getting a Playstation Vita port, due sometime this April. It contains all the content from the PS3 Komplete Edition console release (that is, the vanilla game, Kratos and all the DLC) as well as some exclusive extras:
(Online play is now limited to 1v1 random and friend matches - no online 2v2, no KOTH. Wi-Fi only, no 3G.) Hands-on with Hector Sanchez! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0dITEtG1Ik ![]() Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection is a digital release by Other Ocean Software (ex-Backbone guys, they did the UMK DS port) and Netherrealm Studios that contains the first three arcade games (Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3) in all their original arcade-perfect* glory, complete with online play, voice chat, leaderboards and trophies/achievements. The Kollection is available on XBLA and PSN for 800 Points / $10, and is also available on PC (Steam GFWL) for $9.99. It used to suck, but then they patched it, and now it's definitely not entirely terrible! (*This is not the HD remake collection rumoured/leaked earlier in the year; that project was cancelled due to technical issues, so we're getting this instead.) Quick features list:

I'm still working on the OP, there's more to come, I just wanted to get the thread up ASAP so people could post about the Arcade Kollection. If there's anything obvious you think needs to be in there, post it now while I'm paying attention.

When you say that the moves are accessible in-game, do you mean that if you pause, it will tell you all of the finishers, even like babalities and friendships and stuff, or do you have to unlock those?
|

It'll tell you all the finishers right from the beginning, and you can pause to look up the moves list during the fatality window too.

I just saw the ad for the MK Kollection but forgot my PSN password and their systems are down, can't retrieve anything. ![]() Also probably going to buy the new MK for the hell of it at the end of the week, I suck monkey dicks but love the series.

I am dumb and can't figure out how to view a character's ending after you've finished the ladder with them in MK9. I've poked around in the Nekropolis but can't seem to find the option.

Really eager to hear how well the MK arcade collection plays online. I didn't grab UMK3 from XBLA until it had been out for awhile. I'll probably end up trying to get a PSN share group going for it before long.

Welp, http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2011/08...layable-online/ "If you’re looking to buy the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection for its online mode, you might want to reconsider your options. This compilation has what is by far the worst netcode out of any fighting game I’ve ever played. It’s somehow worse than The King of Fighters XII’s notoriously awful netcode. I don’t even know where to begin. The biggest problem is that the game runs at about half the speed no matter what. I played Mortal Kombat II and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 online and the results were exactly the same. You can’t play it like you normally would for that fact alone. Inputs get dropped and it’s nearly impossible to do moves on reaction. There were moments when I tried jumping and kicking and the jump wouldn’t even register. It’s completely unplayable. You can only host 1-on-1 lobbies, there is no support for spectating, no replays, or anything like that. You can’t even see the name of your opponent during a match. How is any of this even acceptable? It’s not." Bummer, I had a feeling this would be a slap-dash port, that's a real shame, the full article also has footage of the game in action. I doubt it but perhaps I'll be lucky and this is a ps3 only issue. Edit: Anyone got a good link to a list of revision changes in MK arcade machines? While messing around with mk 1 last night on mame I noticed combos were a bit rough to do and then found tidbits explaining the "floaty-ness" was turned down in later revisions but can't seem to find a good resource for more complete info. Just played a couple of matches. Unbelievable. I payed money for this. It didn't even occur to me that netcode this bad existed anymore. You can't even input codes at the versus screen in UMK3? What the gently caress is this trash? Cyra fucked around with this message at Aug 31, 2011 around 01:49 |

Pretty sure MK 1 is missing some sound effects (like when blood splatters on the ground or people get knocked down), including the satisfying smacking noise when you uppercut somebody, and shao khan's throne room in UMK3 has a messed up background. If it was like that in the original arcade version, feel free to correct me, but there's visible empty black square spaces as you move around it. It's very jarring. I don't understand. How do MK 1-3 not perform properly on a PS3? How is this even excusable? I'd have thought this would have been treated with a modicum of respect following something like MK 9. Geez, even all the trophies have the exact same icon. How much less effort could they have put into this? edit: hahaha the music in MK 1 just cut out. Haha, my plan from the start was to completely avoid MK Arcade Kollection unless I heard it had the best netcode ever included with a console fighting game, and well I guess that isn't quite the case! Hey as long as I'm getting in on the ground floor here, the way you beat Shao Kahn in MK9 is by blocking everything he does until he throws a hammer, then jump over it and combo him. You heard it here first! Now don't ask about it! (Turns out you can also punish his up shoulder move, I could have sworn Liu said that was unpunishable but I was playing ladder the other day and I totally punished it, for reals).

Scorpion's "Get Over Here" is cutting off after the "Get" in UMK3. I'll have to compare using MAME to be sure, but different audio clips seem to be all over the place volume-wise. Haven't bothered with online yet, but apparently it's not good. Disappointed in this, especially after Street Fighter III Online Edition.

MKII is somehow worse than the 2007 PSN release. Some sound effects are either missing entirely or sound wrong (like Sub-Zero's ice freeze).

Because I'm a big sucker for MK I was willing to buy it when I got home despite the bad netcode, now that I hear it is also full of emulation errors I'll have to say no. Where/when did the hd collection info come out, seems last 2 days are the first I'd heard of the issues and always just figured it was something that showed up in game store pos's but wasn't a real thing. Surgeon General posted:Any chance they had a deadline to meet and plan on fixing it? From what I read they decided to scrap it because they couldn't preserve the original gameplay because of the clash between the original hitboxes and the new actors they were making the sprites from. Even if they do decide to pick it back up I can't see it working out unless they can find a way to have the new actors' sprites not change the gameplay.
