A GPU is not needed for high resolution, dude. Sure, a plain VGA driver is not going to be able to go above 640x480, but a VESA driver could do better and work on 99% of PC graphics hardware.

You'd still be doing everything in software too, just how you like it.

It would be okay for low refresh rates or limited size rapid refreshes. The horsepower needed depends on how many pixels you are pushing around through rotations and stuff. They make GPUs for a reason. Modern Video games would be impossible without GPUs.

What I am saying is that your 2D GUI could very easily do more than 640x480x16 if you'd actually take the time to read up on VESA. No GPU required.
