Hahahahaha, I just got there last night. I'm rolling a good sword you can get early on (not spoiling it) or a Divine Winged Spear +5 that I farmed like two hours for and one-shotting enemies... and then I get there and it's like, every enemy takes 4 hits. And some of them just don't give a gently caress and knock you right the gently caress off. Just when you think you've got a handle on poo poo... well, real Dark Souls starts now.

I think the biggest difference between Dark and Demon Souls is that in Demon Souls, a lot of the good stuff is accessible early on if you know what you're doing. In Dark Souls, you still have to travel to find all kinds of dudes and there's a lot of sequential progression to get them, and even when you do everything costs a zillion loving souls. I think I have been able to afford only 3 or 4 spells so far.

EDIT: And just as a kicker, farming the blobs that drop the green titanite shards for the Divine reinforcements doesn't give you any souls. What a bitch.

PS1 games on the PSP use regular old fake memory cards, they just automatically give you two memory cards dedicated specifically to that game(and if memory serves you can change which memory cards are loaded while playing the game if you so desire, which would make sense when playing something like Suikoden II if you could do so legitmately or when playing MGS with a card full of Konami saves). It's how you can move saves back and forth between a PS3 and PSP.

This is how they work for the PS2 hardware emulation thingy saves, too. I also have a PS2-> USB adapter that I know works with the PS3, so I put my PS2 God Hand saves on to the PS3. I guess the heart of my question is "do they use virtual memory cards?"

Am I allowed to dislike Ico? Finished it today, and I really gotta say I didn't like it that much. I played and loved SotC on the PS2 but never tried Ico before this collection. The gameplay felt archaic and imprecise to the point of frustration at several points, the much-lauded art direction manifested itself as an empty castle made of legos bathing in insane levels of bloom, and Yorda is just retarded. I really can't see why she always gets a pass from being a terrible character to escort in every video game companion list ever, she's a pain in the rear end. As a whole I felt the game was alright, but fell short of the sublime masterpiece it's been advertised as. Well, for me, at least.

Ico actually made me briefly question if Shadow of the Colossus was truly as amazing as in my memories (it is)

They haven't updated the ps2 games that are on psn right? I figured they wouldn't have new textures or anything, but are they reformatted for widescreen tvs or higher resolutions? If they output to 480i like many ps2 games then they'll look pretty bad on most newer tvs.

This may not be a HD re-issue for Odin Sphere, but it might as well be one. The load times are almost non-existence now and slowdowns are ultra rare now. I haven't fought her yet, but people who fought Odette said there was no slowdowns.

A lot of it may have been the time it came out. Put simply, there just wasn't anything else out at the time like ICO. It came out super early during the PS2's lifetime, as I recall, so everybody was blown away by the fact that it was coming out so soon after the PSX's life cycle.

My impression of the God Hand port is that it's pretty close to the original version, with the exception of some cutscene weirdness where things sometimes become pixelated, maybe to do with the smoothing method the PS3 uses.

My main problem with the story is that the game starts with a scene, then goes to flashback but when you get back to the starting scene ITS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

I went with the temple knight on my Demon's Souls reroll in the end. She had the lowest magic stat, which meant more points towards the stats that enhance stabby death. The magic is just an emergency heal? I can live with that. Turns out the annoying blue glow on my royal character was from the magic wand, not the general soul glow, and the temple knight has a more restrained golden glow coming from her talisman. Visually it's much less distracting, which is another bonus.

Wasn't too crazy on the halberd, but in just a few minutes I got back as far as I had in my first 3 hours of play thanks to being a bit more durable and hard-hitting and I bought myself some new weapons. Now I'm torn between the spear and longsword. Both of them are so much fun to use. The longsword is currently my favourite (slightly) as I like the slash attack for carving up a bunch of enemies, and its strong attack thrusting the sword into the face of a single foe is total boss.

This is a drat fine game. drat fine.

Edit: Just met and beat Phalanx. My word that was a fun and very satisfying boss fight. Returned to the Nexus with a bunch of stuff and upgraded my longsword to +1 and my spear to +2. Now I'm really ready to get some serious killing done.

I can definitely see where a lot of the criticism for Ico comes from. For the opposite point of view, though, I'm also one of those that had a PSX and PS2 the day the were released, and somehow missed both Ico and SotC until the HD re-release.

I played through Ico in one sitting and thought it was fantastic. The graphics may not be much to look at by today's standards, and the combat is a little wonky at times, but overall I am going to count myself in the camp that thinks this game is a bit of a masterpiece.

There's a level of emotion in the minimalist storytelling that hasn't been captured by too many other games. Yorda may have pissed me off when I was dragging her and she got stuck on a stray polygon and sucked into Hell, but damned if I didn't hit continue so I could make sure she got to that next couch OK.

I would say next up is Shadow of the Colossus, but I'm already down to 3 hours of sleep a night and I'm going to get fired from work. loving Blight Town.

Actually Faith is for miracles (white magic) and Magic is for black magic, as a temple knight you have decent faith so you can use miracles no problem. If you never bother there's at least one really good miracle called evacuate that lets you escape to the nexus with all your souls in case you have a feeling you are going to die and want to cash out.

Keep more than one weapon on hand, some are better for different situations.

Been playing Dark Souls for a while. Its a fun game, but my biggest nitpick with it is that earlier I got stuck on a boss and must have died at least 9 times, having to go through the same tedious enemies all over again. Its crazy fun when you're actually making progress though.

I feel like I was discouraged in buying Demon's Souls because of the difficulty, but I decided because of all the hype I would rent Dark Souls and see what I was missing. Dark Souls is a great game but I was pretty bad at it. In fact, I felt like I had reached a point where I wouldn't be able to progress any further but I also felt that there was something about the game that was really addicting.

I decided after a couple days to return Dark Souls and just buy Demon's Souls for $20. I heard it may be easier and $20 isn't really a huge investment. What a great decision. I am sure at some point I will be frustrated, but after about 20 hours, I have to say the game play is even more addicting than Dark Souls, and the game is just plain easier. I really like the Nexus more than the camp fire element, and the game in general feels a bit more, I am not sure how to say it, but approachable. I also like all the worlds a lot more so far in Demon's more than what I played of Dark.

Well, gameplay-wise Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was pretty similar, with more of an emphasis on athletics and a less minimal story, but both featured puzzle solving involving running around neat architecture while escorting a girl and pushing boxes and switching on mechanical devices punctuated by bad or mediocre combat sequences.

Really, the game play is unique enough for this generation, that I have little choice but to play Dark next. I still think about the strategy of how to get through where I was stuck. It's funny that when I went from Dark to Demon's I almost felt like a Veteran as I was able to get through 1-1 and the tutorial without dying. That changed pretty quick though.

Yeah dark souls is great but definitely feels like it's made for veterans of the first. You're right that the nexus makes the game more approachable - you have a friendly base to return to, you can easily get from place to place and it feels like you have a useful supporting cast that sticks with you. This wasn't bleak enough so in dark souls you are constantly on the run in weird new areas and everyone hates you.

Firelink Temple is basically the Nexus, it connects to every major hub in some way and you can get to most locations pretty fast from the shortcuts once you unlock them. You got your magic guy, the depressed dude, the chick who lights the fire, the big raven, and half a dozen guys you unlock over time.

It's also like the Nexus in that everyone you rescue hangs out there, except in Dark Souls' case they're all either murderous assholes or completely apathetic losers.

This was my reasoning for picking up Demon's Souls now as well. With the servers being renewed this month, it means I have a year to enjoy the online elements of the game. I love seeing the messages and bloodstains, it really would be a different game without all of that. As much as I'd enjoy getting straight into Dark Souls, I figured it was now or never to enjoy the real Demon's Souls.
