Do people still think that escort missions are always bad, instead of frequently bad when handled by poor game design?

It was *completely fine* in RE4, for example, and that was with a character wholly incapable of defending herself.

It sounds like her too.

Anyways, Naughty Dog has not talked about the gameplay yet, that i'm aware of. I would be surprised if a 14 year old girl is killing people in a video game though. What I expect is that she'll be useful in other ways, helping you find items, or any other number of possibilities. There might even be co-op, Naughty Dog hasn't ruled that out yet.

Its been done correctly in games, but it's one of those things that can easily backfire, and if it does suck, it ruins the game.

Well it sounds like you're right, because on the last page; http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3435394&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=160#post400210420

It also mentions she stays out of your way. So I was right, she won't have a combat role, they have other plans for the character that make her useful. Reveal trailers and concept art on magazine covers are never representative of a game. They set the tone for the type of game its going to be, trying to glean hints of gameplay from one is pointless.

Whatever you say. On the other hand, I'm certain that drawing conclusive evidence from a paraphrased bullet point which in no certain terms confirms or denies whether she'll be armed is the way to go.

Have you never heard good AI behavior described as "staying out of your way"? As in not getting in your line of fire or otherwise annoying you regardless of whether they themselves shoot or not. It doesn't tell us anything about whether she carries a weapon or not.

There was a making of video somewhere and two Naughty Dog guys were talking about the Drake/Tenzin sequence in the ice cave and how they created a non-verbal relationship and how a lot of players quickly took to him, and The Last Of Us is born out of an extension of those ideas. Which is kind of why I was hoping you'd play as the girl and rely on the guy and become increasingly independant, and not the other way round where you seem to be stuck with most of the baggage.

Yeah. It's actually a better game (and a better CE) than FF13-2. Only thing is, FF13-2 has a bigger (and slightly better) soundtrack.

But holy poo poo, isn't it sad that the artbook for a fighting game kicks the poo poo out of an rpg's artbook?

I passed up on the FF13 CE because it didn't have anything I really wanted. Honestly, my main reason for getting SC5's CE was so that I'd get access to pretty dress-up parts and Dampierre, the best Soulcalibur character.

That's a really interesting way to approach a NPC character, similar to how you come to care about the Agro horse in Shadow of the Colossus or Yorda in Ico where spoken words aren't understandable.

However, in the Last Of Us' case it's reversed since the tension isn't between two characters that can't communicate through words but two characters with two different backgrounds and worldview coming to understand each other. Naughty Dog has done character chemistry really well for the Uncharted game and that's where the main draw for this game for me is :)

Also in terms of game mechanic talk (tm) I was hoping for a faster Character Tag Mechanic- similar to that of Resident Evil 0- where in combat and puzzle solving you can manually jump between the two characters, with the AI taking over the character you don't play as with preset actions.

Then that opens up gameplay where you can use one character to lure an enemy and another to flank them, or have one act as look out while you search rooms.

Sorry, guy.
So, I ask you all for your thoughts, because I was thinking about this on my drive in today. It's been (over?) a year. Do we pretty much consider Move 'dead'?

It started less than weak, but not really strong, and then almost instantly, was not supported at all with games. Sure, some games that have regular control schemes ALSO support it, but there is no real reason to own it.

I bought mine near day one, and sold it off a few months later when (to me) the writing was already on the wall.

Sony could just release new light gun games on PSN every week and I would just keep buying them. Time Crisis Razing Storm is the best $30 I've spent in a long time.

If this would happen, I totally would too, but one thing keeps me from getting a Move: The loving light ball at the top. Why the gently caress can't we have a GunCon that's compatible with Move games, or something? Words can't describe how uncomfortable/distracting playing a game of Razing Storm is with a teeny-tiny little toy gun shell with a huge lightbulb popping out of it is.

Even despite my love for Time Crisis, it just doesn't feel right at all.

I would pay full price for a GunCon, because aiming with a real world sight wouldn't make me violently sick when I try to play. I got through one level of Dead Space Extraction and threw up like 15 minutes later because I was trying to fight a shaky cam AND a jittery mouse pointer.

Just give me a real light gun, drat it Bandai Namco!

I'm starting to think that Sony doesn't actually check who they're sending automated messages on the PSN to. Just got one about "Starhawk Beta Now!" opening with "We see that you have played UNCHARTED 3". Well no Sony, I haven't bought or even played UC3 yet. In fact I already have the beta that you gave me for being a PS+ subscriber. They didn't even give me a code or anything, just "hey there's a voucher in your game if you bought it new, use it!"

Oh and speaking of Sony and weird messages. Sony Japan is telling their members that the PSN is being renamed to "SEN" (Sony Entertainment Network). Probably something to do with Music Unlimited/whatever the video store is called/Vita. Supposed to happen on Feb 8th (I think)

I've gotten a ton of fun out of that disc (it's effectively five games for the price of one, and you can get it way under $30 in the UK), which makes me very confused when I look at the reviews for it and see a lot of 30-40% ratings from major sites.

A lot of people really hated it. Usually marking it down for 'being accurate arcade ports', which is apparently a bad thing these days.

Think of it this way: it takes a lot of arcade plays to equal the cost of buying a video game. Is the game going to stay fun long enough to recover that cost? For most light gun games, for me anyway, it absolutely wouldn't.

edit: wait are we talking about full priced games here or $15 downloadable games? If its that then hell yeah it becomes worth it.

I've only played the Wii version, but I loved the poo poo out of Overkill. The plot is extra-retarded, even for a HOTD game and the dialog between the two mains is just the right level of cheese to be super funny. Plus it validated my purchace of two Perfect Shots for my Wii, which is a plus.

Fair warning, if you do end up buying the game don't buy the auto shotgun the first time through. It breaks the game in half and ends up not being nearly as much fun. The assault rifle deals a lot of damage as well but doesn't one-shot three mutants at a time.

Actually the Chain Gun is equally game breaking if you don't care for combos :ocelot:

And I also highly recommend HoTD:Overkill to anyone who wants a on the rails game that's hilarious to play through. It's got great style, great music and has some great quips if you're not worried about f-bombs. And there's two new extra missions! How can you resist?

Some new gameplay videos of Dragon's Dogma showing off the Fighter and Strider classes.

Combat looks really, really fun. I've never played Monster Hunter, so I can't compare to that, but these vids game me a real "Twilight Princess HD" feel (in a good way).

There's no HUD or NPC helpers in those clips though, so it's not 100% indicative of what gameplay will actually be like.
Personally I'm more of a solo player, so I hope there's an option to hold the NPCs back and take on monsters alone.

Capcom really do not know how to promote this game. I'm assuming those enemies have large health bars for demo purposes, but showing the player repeatedly do the same things is just not interesting. I really dislike the trend of pausing gameplay on hit also. It's possible Dragon's Dogma could be a game that I enjoy, but they are doing a very poor job of showing it off.

Why?

Why does the game freeze every time a swing connects?

Who the gently caress thinks this looks appealing in any sense of the word? Why yes, I would like my game to look like it is individually loading the sound effect for every swing off the disc each time I press "attack", which, by the looks of it, is quite often.

It's a Monster Hunter holdover. Capcom is really stupid sometimes and keeps really awful things from their older games like canned animations when taking damage (Lost Planet).
