So apparently the guys who made Payday The Heist are teaming up with Valve to make a brand new Coop shooter. Given how Valve let Portal 2 have cross platform play, I gather that this will probably be goal as well. PTH was a great effort, and hopefully with Valve applying the polish on whatever they come up with, it could turn out to be real good.

I'm conflicted about Rock of Ages. The art design, cutscenes and humor are all pretty great(even if the joke are a little dated) but I just don't find the gameplay all that fun. At least I got it free with PS+

But it is one of the games I am excited for later this year. I haven't seen any mention of a map editor this time, though, which is a bit of a shame. Making maps was fun, and you could do some pretty impressive things if you put in the effort. That said, hardly anyone ever played any of mine - people most seemed to prefer lovely sniper-fests like the one where the teams line up along ledges on each side of a perfectly straight canyon and plink away at each other. The respawn delay in FC2's multiplayer was frustrating as hell, too. Dying should be punishment enough in itself - why do I then have to wait as much as 15 seconds to get back into the game?

I actually gave Rock of Ages another try after complaining about it and semi-warmed up to the whole concept. You eventually learn that the entire tower defense concept can be cheesed to hell and make the feature pretty trivial so all that's left is to make sure you've got the money to keep building and enjoy the rolling part. I beat the game last night but it took like 3/4 sittings because the whole game does not lend itself very well to extended play, especially when stage settings begin repeating. Anyway, the tower defense segment is kind of a joke because 9/10ths of it is just making sure they're going slow for the last stretch. So you just load up the last building squares with your towers and such to slow them down. So like you make a blockade of towers, then put air blowers behind them and then you put your catapults/arbalests in range of these towers so while they're fumbling to get over the tower/past the air they get shot by the catapults. And then you put Elephants to batter them around and knock them off the stage/into walls/hold them down. In the very last regular stage, I just made so many arbalests at one really awkward part in the middle of the course that the AI couldn't get past it and died every time it entered there. But most of your work is usually at the end.

Yeah as someone who lived near the shore for ten years I can tell you right now that part of the game is 100% how it is. Though Hoboken in real life is hardly rundown. I'm surprised, given the general direction of Rockstar's stories that they didn't choose Patterson or Asbury Park instead. The former is the only city in the US to have an adult curfew due. The latter, up until maybe five years ago you could literally go there on a Saturday night and film an episode of Manhunt and no one would even notice, you'd get volunteers. I actually thought Manhunt was based on it when the game came out.

...! posted:Well, I'm about five chapters into Max Payne 3 and I'm hoping the gameplay gets better because so far it's not great. The cover mechanic is completely out of place and it makes it almost never worthwhile to use bullet time or shootdodges so the feel of the game is completely off. In the first two games you pretty much have to use it all the time but here you almost never do except for the moments where it plops you down completely in the open against 5+ enemies, any one of which can completely drain your health in under a second. ... and I don't know what you're doing differently, but I didn't even realize the NPCs you fight with could die, and I use bullet time constantly in Max Payne 3. Taking cover, especially in the later levels, just makes you a target for flanking or grenades - you spend a good half the game flying in slow-mo between different covers, or running dramatically across a line of fire with bullet-time engaged. (There's a particularly cool shootout in an office near the halfway point where paper's flying everywhere, cubicles are exploding, etc) With the NPCs dying, are you certain that wasn't just one of the time-out events that hits if you wait too long? Those are freaking irritating to be sure, but I don't think I've ever seen an NPC I'm fighting with / escorting actually die in anything but a scripted sequence. There's absolutely plenty to be irritated by, though. I dig the gameplay, but the story just... doesn't go anywhere. It's like they knew how to write Max for the first few hours, but couldn't figure out how to evolve the character or story beyond that, so it's just that first few hours worth of character stretched over the entire game. Gameplay evolves fine, but the story's static. They even pull a kill-the-girl-you're-trying-to-rescue... and instantly replace her with a carbon copy of the girl for you to run after again! Go on Max, your princess is in another castle!. Still digging it overall, but they certainly front-loaded the more charming bits. Kinda reminds me of LA Noire in that sense - it seems like it stretches on way past where it should have. Unless the end really wows me, I think I would have left with a much more positive impression if they'd just ended it at the 1-disc mark. It really turns into Uncharted: The Max Payne Stories after about the halfway point. It couldve been any nameless protagonist. I still dig the game though a lot Only real problem I had is (concerning the end game) I thought I was paying attention but Who the gently caress is Becker and why do I hate him so much???

Particularly because the most visually interesting party of the game is over in less than an hour, and then it's just bad writing with a retarded ending, and the browniest environment that ever did brown. The characters were all terrible and it lacked all the great VA work and weird characters of HS. Can you elaborate on this please? I was thinking of picking up a cheap used copy of Enslaved purely for the eyecandy and having a quick run through it. Your post seems to imply however that everything they showed of the game (all the green foilage, blue skies, colour etc) is actually a very small part of the game? Does it quickly nosedive into brown for 90% of the game or something?

Asbury Park was like a literal ghost town with the occasional drunk prostitute or drugged out crazy guy stumbling around just within line of sight. Any time there at night was hard to discern from watching the early parts of Escape from New York or playing Condemned 1. Geographically though yeah it takes place in "not Newark." MUFFINS: The foliage colorful portions of Enslaved are great. A lot of the game though takes place in robotic machinery like the ship you escape from in the demo. Lots of mechanical corridors and such. The difficulty also never really rises due how simple and restricted the combat and platforming are. Personally I didn't hate it but I wouldn't spend more than like $10 on it.

I'm interested to hear what your opinion is once you've finished the game. I really feel like that point is when the story changes gears into something much more interesting. I really liked the way the first half of the game builds up the events of the second half. I feel like the split to two discs for xbox would have a cool affect on that transition, actually.

On the one hand, XBL has a broader user base, more centralized integration (voice chat ftw), and a stronger cohesive direction. On the other hand, that central control can also be frustrating to developers used to the flexibility of a self-run PC market or the Steam platform. XBL makes Microsoft a metric shitload of money every year though, so I'm not sure how much motivation they would have to change their policies.

Up until today I had no idea there was a Ratchet and Clank HD collection coming out. Having seen the screenshots, I want it, despite already owning all three games in the pack on PS2. Granted, I already owned all the games in the MGS collection but at least that has the draw of being able to see what you're doing in Snake Eater. I'm not the only one who buys these HD packs of games they already have, am I?

I'd say like half the HD Classics I've bought on PS3 are for games I already owned on PS2. Usually the prospect of getting a trilogy/series I liked in HD with Trophies and improved performance is worth the $40 or so.
