Funny thing is that if it is like its DS counterpart, then the book will come with every version of the game, simply because it's part of the gameplay. The game itself is going to tell you to look up a certain page, or spell, or something, knowing that you'll have the book right next to you.

If someone released a strategy guide that looked like that for other games, I'd pay many dollars for it. It's just a gorgeous thing, cover to cover.

IMO, DS2 is way better than the first. It loses steam at the end but the highlights of that game are incredible. To me it was almost an Uncharted 1 to Uncharted 2 like difference. Not quite that great but man is it good. It also has one of my favorite/least favorite enemies in any game. They're so loving annoying but any scene with them is awesome.

I prefer the mechanics of DS2, but I enjoy the story and the atmosphere, general horror stuff, of DS1 better. They're both well-made games though, worth a play through at least.

Cliff's notes on story and gameplay style? And does it have anything that will make my fiancee raise an eyebrow at me?

First, no, the game is fairly free of anime nonsense (though some of the characters are a little strange in the fashion department). Oh and the queen of the underworld has really big breasts, but that's besides it.

The game is a sidescrolling action-RPG. You fight enemies, progress chapters, and level up as five different characters in intermingling fighting styles, each with distinct fighting styles. The levels are basically divided in circles (or spheres, I suppose). Experience is in the form of Phozon (I think?), a substance that your weapon can absorb to raise its strength experience. If, however, you plant seeds, you can grow plants that can be eaten or cooked then eaten to raise your health experience.

The game's biggest drawback was its framerate issues, though there is also the problem with repetitiveness, as you'll find yourself fighting the same bosses a few times, with different characters each time.

I keep hearing so many conflicting things about Dark Souls difficulty. A lot of people have told me that Dark Souls is actually much easier than Demon's Souls. That they toned down the difficulty to much.

I really need to just buy that game already.

Depends. The non-linearity of Dark Souls means that you can find yourself way out of your depth much easier than Demon's Souls. For example, in the starting area, the closest thing the game has to a hub, you can simply walk fifty feet and meet skeletons that will completely wreck your poo poo. You go another way, down a path, and you'll find yourself in a derelict town with ghosts you literally can't even hurt without a special item or weapon. Or in a valley filled with drakes that will kill you in one hit. If you go the right way, every time, the difficulty isn't very hard. But it's very, very easy (and sometimes preferable, loot-wise), to go off the path and find areas you shouldn't be in.

Yeah, has info on those? Or maybe he means specific info. For example, in the Caestus listing, there are stats for all the kinds of upgrades, including Fire Caestus, Fire Caestus +5, and Fire Caestus +10. Likewise with lightning weapons. This includes the parameter bonuses.

Edit: Not to turn this into a Dark Souls guide derail or anything. I've also been playing that new Spyro game, which has literally nothing to do with him except that it has him as one of thirty-two characters. Also the fact that you have to pay to simply explore everything in this game you have purchased is a little more than insulting. Still, the tech is really good and it's well-put-together.
