What's the thoughts on Corpse Party? It seems like being a digital only PSP title is probably hurting it in terms of finding an audience, but as a game it seems pretty interesting. I've kept from spoiling myself on the plot too much, but the one thing I'm really liking is that it seems by all account to be a genuinely scary game.

I understand it was something of a hit in Japan, so I know one of you played it.

I have no idea whether it is a fun game (sounds like it is) but "Corpse Party" is a terrible title, it sounds like a fake game from one of those bad dsytopian cyberpunk short story collections I used to read way to much of.

It's an XSEED title which from what I understand was just barely ported over to the states and Corpse Party is a literal translation of the Japanese title.

For complete contrast I took Skyrim out of my PS3 for the first time since it came out and started playing Rune Factory on a whim.

All I can think right now is "Man, I really hope no one catches me playing Rune Factory!" Kind of like how I used to spend all night playing Harvest Moon back in the day and denying that fact to anyone who accused me of it. Sometimes a dude just wants to grow his crops, you know?

Man, that's a dangerous question to ask me. It's basically Harvest Moon. It's super cheesy and girly. A good amount of the game is spent growing crops and interacting with the locals. You make friends, get married, and life on the island continues. There's combat in there, sure, but it's secondary to everything else. If you liked Harvest Moon games in the past, you'll like this. If you didn't, you won't. It might sound like a cop out, but at this point you'll know before you play it if you'll like it or not, unless you've never played a Natsume game before.

Three PS3 games I want in the next three months:

Never Dead: You're immortal. Also a Dick. I think it's the apocalypse. Your body parts come off and you can attach your arms to your head and shoot demons. Holy poo poo.

Binary Domain: Robots evolve to a point where they believe they are every bit as alive as humans. Sounds like Blade Runner! Maybe it will feature a philosophical quandary about what constitutes being alive! Nah, it looks like you're part of a crew of humans that blasts those stupid robots to a hell they never qualified to go to. I think the guy who created Yakuza is behind this.

Yakuza of the Dead: It's Yakuza but with zombies. Buy this!

Well that and a really bad control scheme, unless they do intend to fix it for the foreign versions.

Also it's just weird and wrong being Kiryu but unable to punch anyone (outside of one specific scripted encounter it seems).

Buy this so they keep porting Yakuza games to the US!

It may be the first Yakuza game I buy, depending.

I'm confused how they're going to make brawling with zombies satisfying, though. Zombies aren't usually known for combos and counters or intelligently wielding weapons.

Don't buy this as your first Yakuza game. I say this because it's a wonderful series and this game as your first will give you the worst impression of the series.

Yakuza of the Dead is a stupid zombie game for fans of the series and at worst fans of zombies. It's not even a brawler.

Here's my suggestion to you: Buy Yakuza 4. There's a thing in there that does a truly great job of catching you up on the previous games. Watch all of that then play through 4. Once you've done that and you're now a fan, then get Yakuza of the Dead.

Seriously, Yakuza 4 is an incredible game.

Yes!

Yakuza 1 doesn't hold up gameplay wise, but the story is important. Yakuza 2 is one of the very best PS2 games ever made. Absolutely worth playing, though kind of rare. Yakuza 2 is notable for how insanely over the top the badassness gets.

Yakuza 3 scratched an itch, but Yakuza 4 is just so much better in every regard that I just suggest people skip it and go from 2 to 4.

But yes, 2 is such an incredible game that if it's possible you MUST play it. Preferably as your first Yakuza game.

Today I made the vultures at Gamestop very happy with my pre-orders of Devil Survivor 2, Binary Effect, Never Dead, and Yakuza of the Dead which for some reason has the stupid loving title Yakuza: Dead Souls.

Not surprising, the people there had literally no idea what any of those games were.

Cross posting this from the games thread, but short answer is I was wrong. Maybe.

Okay, so this is a VERY early review, but it's just kind of my initial impressions.

For everything right the game does, it does at least one thing to gently caress it up.

As an example, the whole being immortal thing is pretty cool. No health bars is an interesting concept. Except that a lot of the game is an escort mission and you need to revive Arcadia constantly. Which actually isn't that bad. The real problem comes from the fact that literally every enemy in game can dismember you with a single attack, which takes you out of the action constantly since you need to dive onto your body parts to get them back. But since the enemies never stop attacking you'll get a body part back only to instantly lose it again.

The biggest offense though is that the game needs to have a game over screen somehow, so it introduces these monsters who exist solely for the purpose of eating your head. Again, this takes you out of the action pretty badly because you have to sit through a quick screen and hit a marker which pops up suddenly, something like a rhythm game. you get one try and if you gently caress up (and you WILL gently caress up) you go back to the check point to fight the monsters again.

Combat revolves around two classics: Dual guns and a big gently caress off sword. Again, these are battle tested choices, they're almost impossible to gently caress up. People like guns and swords. See: Dante, Deadpool, the other 1,500 gun and sword characters. The problem is that you run out of bullets constantly, so you need to resort to using the sword. No problem there, except instead of just pressing a button to swing the sword, you need to hold like L1 and then waggle the R stick, and it just doesn't work that well to begin with. to make matters worse, you need both arms and at least one leg to swing the sword, and if you were reading the part about losing limbs all the drat time, you get the picture.

Lastly, a cool part of the combat is the destruction of the property to around you. There must be about 500 oxygen tanks in the first area alone, which is great because they explode. The problem is that what you can destroy is highly inconsistent. Example: I can swing my sword and bust up a whole bunch of masonry, just bringing down entire structures on my head and my foes heads. Yet, I can't knock over a chain link fence. There's literally no way to learn if you can destroy something until you try.

The game seems so close to being really fun that I want to keep playing it to see if it gets better. The characters, story, dialogue, etc,; are absurdly hammy. And I just spent $65 on this game, so I'd really like to get past the first area before coming down too hard on it. Bottom line, if the combat issues get better, i.e. I can use my XP to buy abilities that don't make me explode every two seconds, I think the game will be a lot better. If not, the game will likely be unplayable. If you put a gun to my head right now though I'd tell you to skip it. We'll see.

Uncharted 3 (I recently finished Uncharted 2 and thought it was incredible)
Mad Max 3
Far Cry 2
Skyrim
Spec Ops 2: The Line
Whatever the newest Call of Duty game is, or the new Battlefield game. I have no idea, I just feel like I should jump on this bandwagon
Assassins Creed 2 (Havent played the first one, but I read in this thread that 2 is a good starting point)
Sleeping Dogs
Arkam Asylum or City

I feel as though I want something newer than Far Cry 2 or Assassins Creed 2, but I really don't know. I can't really gauge what kind of mood I'm in right know when it comes to this decision.

Get Skyrim. Seriously, it's one of my all time favorite games. It takes a lot of what was right about Morrowind and removes all of the bad from Oblivion. There's zero chance of you NOT liking this game and every chance in the world you're not going to be able to put it down until you're 53.

The last 4 or 5 games new I have bought at Gamestop were opened. I grabbed NFS Hot Pursuit recently and the guy could originally only find the disc and offered to sell it to me like that (new). I eventually found the case myself and not only was it beat up and covered in old browning stickers(they are still there. I never got them off) but the loving online code was still in the case. I may as well have grabbed a used copy and took the code since they don't do anything to protect them.

They really need to get into the habit of selling the last copy of a game as used or making dummy cases. I'm surprised it's even legal to sell items that are basically used as new.

That happened with me this weekend when I picked up Tales of Graces F on a while. All kinds of open. Everything was in good shape though, minus their super sticky sticker they seal the game with.

I genuinely liked Two Worlds 2, lore and story and all. It obviously ranks below Skyrim for me, but above Oblivion if that helps. The Archery is fun too, but eventually you get to a point where you're doing this:

Ironically, I have the PS Archives version of GodHand, I told myself THIS time I'm gonna get over the problems I had with it back when it was released and really get into it...but I can't. I hate the controls, I hate the poo poo out of them.

edit: I didn't play Splatterhouse and Dante's Inferno, I figured that Lords of Shadow would be better than them.

I've beat God Hand probably half a dozen times. At first I was infuriated with the controls, but I stuck with it because the atmosphere and characters were amazing. Much like Bayonetta, it teaches you to be good at fighting games. The experience you get from God Hand is what you put into it. Eventually the game is down right easy once you master it and it's a true gem of a game. Seriously, stick with God Hand. Yes, the game doesn't give a gently caress if it kills you in regular fights. Yes, it will feel outright unfair a lot of the time. But it's trying to teach you.

Also, Splatterhouse was poo poo and doesn't need to be played by anyone. I didn't play Dante's Inferno because the English Major in me won't stop screaming whenever I see the game and that gets a little distracting. Lords of Shadow at least had a fairly cool ending.
