Yep, mafia 2 pisses me off big time. It could have been a drat good game, but it was so glaringly obvious they cut out tons of content on purpose to sell as DLC later. The big, detailed world with nothing to do, and NPCs that are obvious side quest starters that tell you to come talk to them every now and then, but when you do they never actually give you a sidequest, because they hamfistedly took those out of the base game. The game was an infuriating gently caress up and one of the prime examples of DLC going shady.

I've got a few friends bugging me to pick up BF3 but I'm really picky about FPS games and I've never played a battlefield game before. I really like counterstrike and MAG, and really dislike COD and COD clones.

Things that I like:
-MAG's skill point system, I liked all the different types of builds you could do.
-Being able to live for a good length of time with smart, cautious play, and by cautious I don't mean camping in the same spot.
-The overall feel of the game engine in MAG - I felt like my shots went where I aimed, I rarely felt like I died because of "bullshit", the pacing of the movement was fast but not too fast

Things that I hate:
-Airstrikes/artillery/killstreaks/other things that vaporize huge sections of the map and kill you unavoidably
-Grenade spam
-Dudes respawning behind you after you kill them
-Map design where snipers can lock down all the paths on the map and generally can't be flanked
-Map design and game mechanics (chaining killstreaks, dudes respawning behind you) that encourage camping

Would I like BF3 at all? I'd be getting it for PC but I figured I'd ask the PS3 thread because I made several comparisons to MAG. I don't really know what to make of it and my friends can't answer any of my questions they just keep saying "dude it's so awesome."

2. Having a plan in Dark Souls is more than just "ok how do I kill this giant vaginadragon" its actually understanding how to get places in the gameworld and what you should be prepared for doing. The game is *huge*, and everywhere is physically linked except for Anor Londo and a few other small areas.

To add on to this, when you die you respawn at the last bonfire you camped at, and all the enemies respawn. If you're used to most games that have a checkpoint right outside a boss's area and the thought of having to make your way past all the enemies again sounds completely foreign, well you have been warned. But if you're willing to learn from your mistakes and figure it out, it is extremely rewarding and you'll end up wondering how you ever had trouble before.

Yeah, give the "run and gun more" strategy a spin in Uncharted1 and see if it helps make the game less frustrating. It seemed to be the general consensus around here, but don't drive yourself crazy - every time I tried it I just ended up dying even faster so it isn't a slam dunk. Uncharted2 and 3 are a billion times better though, so don't let the first game turn you off from the sequels.

Prototype2 was a pretty fun romp, but not $60 fun. The game was way, way too loving easy. The most threatening enemy in that game is the camera. I wouldn't quite mind the lack of difficulty if you could escalate the action to the point where it was completely bonkers, but that just doesn't happen in prototype 2. You're so powerful that even if you hop into a military base and start loving around, you'll kill everything surprisingly fast and the alert goes away and the action stops. I don't ever remember that happening in the first game, poo poo would just keep coming.

There used to be a guy from Volition who would post here, I remember he said once that Guerilla basically taxed console hardware as much as it could. If they tried to add any more buildings to the game than they had, the game would just completely break down and stop working correctly. It's a real shame, Guerilla is one of my favorite PS3 games and I'd love to see that kind of destructible building action on better hardware.

The multiplayer was really awesome too, the destructible buildings made the match play differently as it went on and poo poo got blown up.

The most dangerous enemy in prototype 2 is the camera. I really wouldn't worry too much about screwing yourself over, it's MUCH easier than the first game, even on hard mode. Way too easy actually in my opinion. That being said I would skip the stealth oriented powers to begin with, there aren't that many virus detectors you have to worry about and even when you do they aren't that big of a deal. You really can't go wrong with the defensive and movement upgrades.

I definitely agree with just skipping AC1 - youtube it or something if you really want, but I didn't and just hopped right into AC2 and didn't regret it. I will say though that while I really enjoyed AC2 and AC:B, I'm not sure I would have been able to play them back to back. I think I would have been burned out by the formula doing that. I tried to play revelations and just couldn't, I was too tired of the formula. I can't imagine trying to do an AC marathon of all 4 of the games back to back, that'd be crazy.

A lot of the gripes people had about the game on launch have been fixed in the last couple of patches, including some of the ones already mentioned in this thread. Unpopular opinion alert - I liked diablo3 a lot. It was certainly very flawed on release, but they've done a lot to make it better since then. I feel like the game continues to get a really bad rap on SA from people who haven't played the game much if any since then, since most of their gripes with the game aren't really applicable anymore. If anyone skipped it on PC but was interested in the console version, I'd say give it a try with an open mind and don't be discouraged by internet bitching about the game.

Once things became clearer everyone realized that the stat system is actually super basic and then all of a sudden even Inferno became very easy, even without all of the balance changes Blizzard made to it. Once you understood that Blizzard designed it at first so you have to gear up a very specific way, it got very easy.

The stat system IS super basic, but understanding of the stat system isn't what gave people so much trouble in inferno 1.0. The trouble with inferno 1.0 came from 2 major things - the monsters did more damage than they do on monster power 10 (ie, the highest setting possible) of today, and the gear drop/itemization system was shitloads worse. Items have an "item level", so for example a warlord plate was 60, and archon armor was 63, the highest possible. But the best mods only rolled on the higher item level stuff, and those items only dropped in the later acts. So in act 1 inferno you could only get lower item level stuff, AND the possible rolls were really lovely. And stuff lower than item level 60 dropped very frequently, and was 100% guaranteed to be useless. The idea, in principle, was to progress slowly from act to act gearing up in each one with higher item level stuff, but the numbers and balance were completely hosed all to hell.

Since then they scrapped most of that, you can get the highest possible items in any act, and you can roll good mods on lower item level stuff as well, and they buffed the drop rate of rares as well. Then you have the monster power difficulty slider to scale the damage/health/droprates of the monsters to whatever you want. It's actually playable now and you don't need to hit up the auction house at all if you don't want to.

Haven't played it myself but from what I've read the console version rains insanely good loot from the sky and most of it is biased towards whatever character class you're playing. I've been looking at screenshots of the loot people are getting on the console version and those items beat the poo poo out of even the very best loot on the PC version. It's so good I'm actually skeptical of the long term appeal of the console version since the character stats I've seen being posted look like something that you'd generate using a character editor or other type of hack. Normally I don't move around much at all when listening to the phone calls since I don't want to risk loving it up and missing the dialogue. While I was standing there the guy in the car behind me that I couldn't see decided he'd had enough of my poo poo and got out and punched me in the back of the head, interrupting the call. Naturally I turn around and we start fighting, I punch that guy out right about the same time as 2 random guys on the sidewalk decided they had to get in on the action, so I'm fighting with them. Then all of a sudden I get shot dead by yet another random guy who had stopped his car on the other side of the street and got out to shoot me. Vigilante justice?? Who knows?

Lowering the price on death was a start, but I find that I have started running very low on patience for grindy games which it seems that they are intent on turning it into. Some of the missions are really fun, but even the fun ones become a drag once you realize that you just jumped through a bunch of hoops for a measly 4k. It also doesn't get at the problem that half of the content isn't there yet, yet people get angry at you for judging it by what is there instead of what they are planning to do.

Also, I want my scuba gear dammit. I think it would be loving awesome to explore underwater with some other people.

I skipped GTA online because of all the initial connectivity problems it was having, I told myself I'd wait until they fixed those. By the time those were (reportedly) fixed, they'd made some of the grindy nerfs you mentioned, which sounded like the exact opposite of fun. So now I'm waiting until they add heists and more content in general to possibly give it a try, but by the time that happens I quite possibly won't care enough to even try it.
