I have been looking at the banner out of the corner of my eye all day and you finally got me.

Downloading a client

Probably going to play a mage unless there are way too many, that was my vanilla class.

edit: I'm in as Zap the mage

If anybody else is just starting out and wants to be leveling buddies let me know.

I guess this is a good opportunity to ask questions.

Were Shamans useful for raiding in vanilla? I had one and for the most part enjoyed it, but I only got him to 54 (god were those first 30 or 40 levels dull.) Everything I've been told so far is that they were useless and only served to pull aggro and wipe groups.

Also had a 60 rogue, but I never got to raid on him either, so same question as above I guess.

They were fine for healing, but not as useful as paladins to the raid, hence why you heard about it so much

Decursive (automatically highlights who has a defuff you can dispell, I'll move this to replace the vanilla guide when I have reached 60)
CT Viewport (allows you to resize the screen to make black bar at bottom of screen)
Simple Mini Map (allows you to move and change shape of minimap, lots of other options too)
Minimap Button Bag (takes all minimap buttons and puts them into one)
Monkey Quest (quest tracker that is awesome)
Vanilla Guide (easy to follow levelling guide 1 to 60)
X-Perl (unit frames mod that changes the default unit frames and allows them to be easily moved)
Bartender (helps move your hotkey bars and adjust the look of them)
Meta Map (+ mods, for the compass at top middle of screen that automatically appears when vanilla guide suggests co-ordinates)

NOT SHOWN

Advanced Trade Skill Window (shows what pots etc you are capable of making using mats in your bags and bank)
AH Mail Collect (auto collects successful AH sales from your mailbox - for lazy people)
Align (allows you to align bars when redesigning your ui)
Atlas (+ mods, simply a must have addon that gives you detailed info about dungeons and loot drops)
Auctioneer (great for helping save for mount cash)
Chat Mod (allows scrolling of chat with mousewheel)
CT Mastermod (for moving the casting bar)
ENH Tooltip
Equip Compare
EZ Dismount
GMail
Improved Error Frame (gets rid of any errors caused by multiple mods)
Mob Info 2

Otravi Skin (just because)
Scrolling Combat Text
Simple Combat Log

I noticed this same thing in the Tanaris hive... the bugs there spawn 2 mini bugs that can be 1-shotted and give full xp.

I don't think it was like that in vanilla though so I pretty much just did the quest and left... I'd really rather level at a normal rate so I actually have time to level skills, run instances, get the appropriate level of rep, etc. etc.

I am kind of OCD about actually finishing every quest in the zones I run. Power-leveling throws that off and makes it even more boring when you have to come back and grind rep or run the beginning steps of a chain, etc.

So why didn't they just ban the people they found exploiting this and then put a temporary freeze on character creation while they iron out the bugs?

Or just restrict script commands for all accounts that do not have at least one character over level X.

Would someone really be willing to level a character to, say, level 30, just to grief the server one time and have their account banned?

Would that work, or is there behind-the-scenes scripting that has to happen to make the game work? I don't really know how this stuff works

That is the page my version of the realm checker currently scrapes for the server population number, as mentioned before, every time the page is requested it has to query the database and game server which will become taxing if too many people use the application.

I am hoping for a similar page without any other mark up or frills that only updates its contents every few minutes or whatever freaky deems appropriate.

Ah I didn't realize that the page did an active query to the server every time you refresh it.

I guess I assumed that something pushes data out to the page or something (I don't know how this stuff works)

I would support just leaving it as a roll system until the roster stabilizes a little bit.

Yeah it sucks that someone might hit 60, get an epic, and then never log on again, but it seems like a lot of work to set up a DKP system this early, before a bunch of people have even hit 60.

I would let the bulk of the people currently leveling hit 60, and then at that point, if the first 4 or 5 MC bosses are working pretty well by then, maybe that's the time to implement a system.

lapse
Jun 27, 2004

I still say /roll is fine until the bulk of the levelers hit 60 and the raid team stabilizes a bit. There is a pretty big group of 45-55s that have been coming up through the levels as a mob. Plus there seems to be a ton of people who are gone currently, poopsocking their way through Skyrim instead of WoW. Give it 2-3 weeks and have this discussion again.

Personally I don't care what the system is after that. Lets review the 4 most common systems that have been discussed here.

1. Roll - Works fine for the place we're at right now, but long term it is tough to justify some dude who just hit 60 rolling in on his first raid and getting lucky on a roll for Thunderfury or something.

2. Loot council - Loot council seems to be used simultaneously by the best raid groups and the worst raid groups, and causes either no drama at all or total implosion depending on who sits on the council. With goons, I suspect it would not work.

3. Class leaders - Class leader system sounds fine the way it was just described, but I would add that you need class leaders that are willing to defer on the "best" items that everyone always wants. I have been in guilds where a class leader gets the idea that "I'll take all this other stuff after everybody else, but I'm the first guy that gets ________". That's fine if you're the main tank and the item matters for progression, but other than that, just breeds drama. The uber items should go first to non-class leaders whenever feasible.

4. DKP - DKP is fine but you need a clear explanation of exactly what "oversight" will take place and what "checks" it will have, or it will also breed drama when someone is forced to take a "upgrade" where they get an extra +2 spirit or something, and then the next boss drops what they actually needed. Exaggeration there, but everyone gets the point hopefully.
