The best thing about Ricky Gervais calling in is the week after when Jonathan is angry that no one mentioned it on their message boards. He clearly thought the boards were going to blow up and then it literally got like one mention. An odd connection, a friend they mention who's filming the show for them was Gervais' co-writer on 'This Side Of The Truth', so I'll assume that's how he's heard the show.

nemoulette posted:That movie title was changed to The invention of lying and I think they know Matt Robinson one way or the other. Weird, I totally forgot it was renamed. But yeah what I meant is I assume Robinson introduced Gervais to the show. I just listened to a random episode that had Seth riffing on old school hip-hop and inexplicable laughter at the end of a line that had me cracking up. So, how truthful do you think Seth is? He claims ignorance to a lot of things which I assumed was him playing a character of sorts, but at the same time he's such a weird dude that some things wouldn't surprise me. About the argument. Doesn't the crutch of it become about adoption Vs actual parenting? I can see both sides of their argument. Seth's was that the greatest thing about raising a child is creating it, while Jonathan argued that it was bullshit. But saying that it's been a while since I've listened to it.

That's a brilliant episode, though any time his father appears is great (Like the very sweet moment they call him to wish him happy birthday). It's a shame that they don't fulfil Jonathan's promise of getting his dad on one day because as he said "No matter how crazy my stories are, my dad's are crazier". Also, how can Seth be nervous in front of the camera when he's a loving actor? He's clearly all over the place when they do the 100th episode as a video podcast, but it just seems odd to me that someone who performs in front of others for a living is so afraid of well...performing in front of other's for a living.

redz posted:Maybe that's why Seth was never fully a performer for a living? Right but from what we know of Seth he did try acting full time right? I assume he moved from Boston to LA to pursue it. I just always guessed that he wasn't very good.

After Episode 135 I just want to refer to Jonathan as Jizzface from now on.

Drewsky posted:Ohh yeah I forgot, didn't they advertise Entourage once or twice? I wonder what happened with that. What's funny is a long time later I remember them talking poo poo about the show. They must've had something with HBO since they also advertised Summer Heights High for about 4 episodes.

One thing I always found odd was when Jonathan had a recent rant about people calling him Jah, how it's disrespectful etc so I was a little surprised when I dipped back into older episodes and he refers to himself a few times as Jah. It seems a bit odd he would get so annoyed over something he essentially started.

The thing is they could absolutely monetise the podcast if they wanted to. Never Not Funny is basically subscription based, and would anyone really begrudge paying like 50 cents an episode or something? I don't think it'll harm the integrity of the show but it did make it sound like they're only just able to get by as things are right now. For the show to survive they either have to sell the gently caress out of some T-Shirts, start doing some pay only episodes or do what a lot of podcasts do now and make the backlog of episodes to order in a boxset. As for the episode I thought it got a little weird every time Jonathan talked for Seth. I think part of it was just covering for Seth because he knows how nervous he gets but there were a few times when Maron would ask a question of Seth and Jonathan would step in or where Jonathan just straight up talks over him. It occasionally got obtrusive but I don't think there was anything malicious there, and Seth clearly gets shy when he's talking with other people. Anyway, it was good to hear that they're going to be doing merchandise again. Hopefully they put Seth in charge.

I'd love to be able to see them on a larger screen somewhere. Just have them on my TV every now and then. They seem like something someone would play on the screen in a dystopian nightclub.
