Oh wow that was you? I remember that call, you wrote a book called Flotilla right? Side question, is there anywhere I can get the book in .epub? I went and looked it up after hearing it on the show, but I have a Nook and BN.com has a listing for it that is screwed up or something: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/061...word=061556254X

Yup - that was me. Being on the ACS made my traffic and sales jump so never underestimate the power of podcasts or Ace, himself.

The Nook version was taken offline so I could do Amazon Select. I think I'm out of that period so I'll re-offer it on Nook and let you know when it's up.

http://www.flotillaonline.com is the URL - I didn't give it out on the air but it was amazing how many people went out of their way to find it and buy it just based on the podcast.

Thanks!

The rush is on.

Just finished the second book, and I have to say I was surprised at the writing: it was far better than the first book, which I could barely read. This one -- though I'd heard all the stories before -- I read cover to cover. It's still not great writing, but it's nowhere near as choppy. I'd never recommend his first book to anyone, whereas this one I think would interest people. It makes the assumption that you know the story of his rise to success, so that part I can see being confusing for people, but overall it's a compelling success story and all the tales are funny. His humor is much better conveyed this time, too.

That's good to hear, I may pick this one up. I really liked the two audiobook chapters they put up for the show earlier this week. I'd heard most of the stories but to hear them fine tuned and told in order was still really entertaining.

I had to find the Wendy Williams interview after hearing them talk about it on today's show. It's about 16 minutes in: edit: ugh gently caress that site, if you don't have an adblocker it pops up all kinds of poo poo. Maybe someone will put it up on youtube at some point.

If you watch some of the beginning though, keep an eye out for the whitest guy in the world in the middle of the audience who is literally jumping up and down during most of the crowd shots.

I'm nearly finished it too and I've really enjoyed it so far. I wouldn't have thought that there were Adam stories that he's never told but they're in there. Even the stories we've all heard a million times are pretty funny to read. This one is miles better than In Fifty Years We'll All Be Chicks.

Are you guys reading it or talking about the audiobook? I was going to get the book but I feel like the audio version would be more interesting.

I got the audiobook.
I didn't notice anything that sounded like a big detour in the first hour.

I'm sure the book is fine but reading a transcript seems odd after listening to Adam for ~4000 hours.

I'm reading it and really liking the print version. I got the audio book of In Fifty Years... and Adam's riffing got really annoying. If I want to hear him make it up as he goes along I'll listen to the podcast but I paid for an edited, honed piece of writing so that's what I wanted. Plus the pictures are awesome.

Yeah I think the book is worth it for the pictures alone. I'm sure the first picture of his family has been on the website but it really helps put in perspective just how screwed up his family is.

As an old howard fan, I really do enjoy artie sounding like he's a whole lot better. Also that dude is really good in front of a crowd. Adam really needs a good comedian sidekick to take this thing to the next level. A person who can really yes and not only but.

I just finished the NTBM audiobook and it was great. The riffing is pretty entertaining, and much more restrained on the whole. He brings in Ray and Dr. Drew in different parts of the book to just bullshit with and it's great.

Agreed, Artie was great today. I caught some of his first public appearances when he resurfaced (WTF podcast, Letterman) and he was so reserved and visibly nervous, it's nice to hear him so loose and quick and back to his old self (in the good way). Also, I have no idea what your last sentence means.

Took me a minute - he means someone who improvs well - instead of "Yes, and", a "yes, and not only, but..." guy.

It's that improv "rule", don't block/deny what your partner says, say "yes and not only that but..."

(Adam overgeneralizes it a little into not "making GBS threads on his point" even when it's less an improv thing and more a didactic thing but whatever.)

Veskit

I wrote it awkwardly, but I rephrased what I meant.

They key thing Artie does that makes him far better at improv than most is that yes and doesn't always mean play along with everything someone says. Artie seems to do it when Adam goes into racists rants. This is what infuriates me about Alison mostly is that she doesn't understand that you can yes and while disagreeing with Adam, as long as you stick to it. Tina Fey had a good snip it about this in her book.

Vykk.Draygo

I assumed correctly that I would be the only person that hated Artie. Of course, I don't have much exposure to him, but I felt that most of his jokes were terrible and he was angry about really stupid things. I got a few laughs from him but I would have preferred just about anybody else. Hopefully DAG will be on tomorrow.

There seems to be an Adam backlash in the making. I've seen some relatively high-profile female comedians tweeting and posting about him saying "chicks aren't as funny as dudes" in some recent interview. I wonder how this will effect his booking of guests, though he definitely has a point about Sherri Shepherd and Joy Behar.

This is different, though. Paul F. Tompkins, his wife, Mo Collins, and Jen Kirkman are all people who are part of "the biz" who presumably can spread it around that Adam thinks women aren't funny or whatever it is they took it as, which then makes it less likely they'll come on the podcast. I'm not saying a sure thing, I'm saying I wonder if it'll end up affecting bookings.

I really have a hard time believing that anyone can take him seriously. I mean for christ sake this is the guy who had a show featuring barely legals jumping on trampolines. The blowhard comment is right on, this is nothing new from him, he's said way worse over the years, what I hope comes of it is an epic Adam vs Chick comedian podcast like the one he did with Kevin Smith. Could be interesting.

Yeah, Adam is basically obsessed with race and it would be a nice surprise if he eased into it a little every once in awhile, or backed off if the mood wasn't right. I mean if he has something important or hilarious or new to say then fine, strike bold, but it's not a great subject to drop lame turds about or pursue out of habit if, say, the guy is bristling because his dad is dead (would have been nice for the show if Wyatt opened up a little anyway but I understand why he didn't). On a semi-related note, I was pretty surprised when someone (Bryan?) asked Adam if his stereotyping had ever led him astray and he said "no". I know comedy and ambiguity aren't great friends but come on dude you're right plenty but you're wrong plenty, too.

That said, my major complaint is just that the live shows usually are not great to listen to, mostly for reasons Adam has already covered.

SlaveToTheGrinds, I totally disagree with you, I mean I have to, no way I would listen to someone as much as I've listened to Adam if I didn't think he had things to say and I'd take him over a person of your choosing if it didn't mean we'd have to essentially have a console war style discussion. That said, yeah I think he's past his prime a little and (as I've said previously) in danger of falling into the conservative blowhard racket.

The Kevin Smith podcast was horrible though.

Part of his schtick is attacking people in the business. While the podcast format is great and void of censorship, you do sometimes wonder if he needs a little filter for his commentary. That was Drew's best quality working with Adam and even Teresa could sort of save him at times. Alison is a horrible fit and Bryan tends to stay out of the social commentary stuff.

I mentioned it before but it feels at times like he's slowly morphing into a right-wing radio personality. While I don't think his views have changed much, the content seems to be centered more and more around the same rants. We're getting less rants on light-hearted topics like iced tea and more on blacks, women, and poor people. I understand the complaints about LA and other social topics from time to time, but it does feel like it's getting awfully political.

I'm getting closer and closer to dumping the podcast. For every reason mentioned above and more. I turned it off today right after he started giving Game of Thrones poo poo just for being a "period piece" and apparently he sees that as being devoid of creativity. First it's not even a period piece, it's a made up fantasy world, it's a great show with tons of critical acclaim, and it's clear he's never even seen it because he claims people shouldn't be interested in this an should be looking at tits, which GoT is loaded with. I'm not even a huge fan of the show, I'm just getting sick of Adam talking poo poo about things he knows nothing about and everyone just sits there and nods for fear of "making GBS threads on Adam's point".

This plus the fact that he still brings up old, tired, unfunny topics such as Drive, "bootstraps" talk, and passion fruit iced tea, he has interesting people on the show and won't let them talk for more than 10 minutes and for many other reasons I just don't look forward to the show every morning any more.
