Man I love OWB but for the first time in over 1800 hours playing the game I'm forced to use drugs. I cannot survive the indoor Nightstalker battles in the X-8: High School Horror! final student record retrieval test. I've got the Hunting Shotgun and Shotgun Surgeon plus And Stay Back but four of those fuckers is too much.

When I heard OWB was "wacky" I was worried but the writing and voice acting is SO good. Dr. Borous made me laugh more than I have in a game since Grim Fandango or Monkey Island 3.

Did you do the "Verify integrity of game cache" thing in Steam? I had this happen when I installed Dead Money and that fixed it.

My only real problem with LR is being forced to launch the missile that creates the Courier's Mile, The game does such a great job of letting the player choose a path everywhere else, but there you must perform that action in order to continue. And there's no information given about what pushing that button will do. Just felt wrong - why can't my character choose not to do it?

Maybe I missed another option?

I've been playing again after some time away from the game and forgot how painful Old World Blues is in terms of stability. It gets worse as you go further through the game. I'd remembered to not try fast traveling from the Sink balcony so I hadn't been doing that but now I get a crash to desktop at least 50% of the time when I try to fast travel anywhere. I wouldn't mind walking from place to place but of course that means dealing with the packs of enemies that repeatedly spawn out of nowhere.

Too bad because its otherwise such a fun place - I just want to get it over with because of the hassle.

I've played through OWB several times and like others have said the proton axe (and inversal axe) is your pal when dealing with robotic enemies. Sometimes you just have to run and hide though - enemies respawn in the outside areas so often that you'll go nuts and run out of ammo if you try to kill them all. You can run away from most enemies and they will "forget" about you so you can fast travel, or sneak away.

Plenty of .308 ammo of all types and backup armor are good things to bring when you start OWB. The ammo is scarce and enemies pack firepower that shreds combat armor.

I have almost 2600 hours put into this game (according to Steam). I've never been able to solve the freezes and CTDs, but they usually happen when trying to fast travel in the DLCs. I find walking away a bit from a fast travel destination when trying to fast travel away cuts down on problems. For example, I can fast travel TO the Sink Balcony in OWB just fine but if I try to fast travel from there I get crashes. If I walk outside on the ground level away from the entrance and then fast travel I'm OK.

Is there a decent place to find a scoped rifle early in the game? I fancy being a sneaky jerk and this Cowboy Repeater isn't quite cutting it.

I always pick up Ratslayer ASAP because I love sniping and 5.56 ammo is much more plentiful than .308. I hoard .308 for use later in the game. That said, I don't go into that place (Broc Flower Cave?) without having Boone and ED-E to help out. It's tough so let the enemies come to you rather than rush in.

Dead Money is so awesome in terms of story but man is it infuriating at times. I've played through it at least ten times but I still die repeatedly when I go through the very last sections. By then I just want it over with so I can get back to the Mojave wasteland with my loot and awesome holorifle.

Weird! Playing tonight I had finished Dead Money's quests but went to get the Snowglobe in Salida Del Sol before going back to the Mojave Wasteland. On arriving back in the Villa Boone decided to show up and ask me "Is it time?". Sure dude!

Never had a companion from the base game show up in DLC before.

Yeah, you start each DLC all on your own. Also, be careful to make sure you're only targeting enemies in ranged combat for a little while at the very beginning!

Edit: The Slow Minded mod lets you complete all quests and finish all the DLCs without getting to level 50 - an alternative to the Logan's Loophole perk for players who want to do everything

I just checked the Nexus site and looks like this mod is gone! I have slowminded.esp in my load order. There is a mod by the same author called "Slower Experience Gains" on the Nexus site which looks like it does the same thing, basically at the start of a new game you can choose a negative percentage of XP gained. I usually pick -30 or -40 percent. I like doing everything possible in the game so this isn't for everybody

CASM is the only mod I think is essential. Seriously, get CASM first. Having to start over deep into the game because your save files have become corrupted is no fun. Nevada Skies is great, though its just graphical enhancements.

I watched the movie Kalifornia and the last 30 minutes or so are in New Vegas areas. Like, they drive by a saloon that looks like Goodsprings and then end up at a place that looks just like Quarry Junction.

I've played this game to the end 25-30 times and I've never done an unarmed run. I just envision chasing multiple enemies all over the place to finish an encounter. That's the way it was is FO 1&2, anyway.

I guess with ED-E and Boone they would help out with the ranged combat and you can concentrate on the punchin'.

Man sneaking around clearing out Nelson at night and sniping all the Legion dudes with Ratslayer and freeing the NCR captives without being detected is so drat satisfying. Plus no Legion reputation hit.

I send Boone and ED-E home and sneak around sniping the dudes outside, free the captives, then go back to Forlorn Hope and talk to Polati or whoever to start the quest. Then I meet up with the NCR guys to do the raid. I lay a few mines on the barracks steps, pop in, run out and around the barracks and let the mines + NCR dudes finish up. No rep hit!

Edit: vvvv Ah - I assumed because I got no notification I was avoiding the rep hit.

Also on the quest where you have to go find the missing NCR dudes who were going to Helios when I find the supplies I just run back to Helios without engaging the guys that spawn to avoid a rep hit.

The writing is really bad at times. But that was a different time - AAA Game of the Year level games came out from really small companies. Fallout 2 was developed from 1997-1998 and had a tiny dev team.

Half-Life 1 was amazing in terms of the writing and attention to detail compared with the status quo at the time.

I've played through Dead Money at least ten times and I still have to consult a guide to find the Snowglobe. The Villa is so drat confusing, but there's no sense of accomplishment - I'm always like "gently caress. Thank god that's over" when I get to the Sierra Madre.

If you do Dead Money first you'll be swimming in money. But I like doing OWB first because I always play as a sniper/repair/science guy and you walk out of there with tons of repair kits and also resistance bonuses against a number of enemies. Plus a cool home base.

It helps if you bring in a spare set of armor because the Lobotomites shred the gently caress out of your armor.

Yeah you end up with tons of parts to make into weapon repair kits at the bench in the sink. Any kind of crafting skill pays dividends. I always end up doing like 5+ round trips back to my Novac room with loot from OWB.

Also an SMG is good against Nightstalkers and a sniper-type rifle can help a lot but is not a guns-friendly experience.

You know, I enjoyed Fallout 3. I don't know that I'll play it again (I don't know if I even can because my copy is linked thru Games for Windows Live and my email address for authentication got compromised). But as a huge fan of the first two games Bethesda did manage to capture the tone of FO1 and FO2. Unfortunately the random wackiness and poor writing is harder to swallow in a giganto-budget release than coming from a small team like in FO1&2.

In Dead Money's ending I know about the trick where you pickpocket the gold on Elijah but every time I've played it by running as fast as I can retracing my route in I make it out with like 2-3 seconds left max. I mean even doing the trick I wouldn't have time to loot the corpse

Am I missing a quicker route or something?

Dead Money combines just too many hassles. There's the cloud that prevents really exploring, nowhere to rest (cool, gotta run all the way back to the police station again), the radios, the path finding, the respawning ghost people, the lack of ammo... You never get a chance to take a breath until you get to the casino. You aren't able to really enjoy the setting and look around the villa because you're always fighting new ghost people. It's just relentlessly frantic.

I haven't played New Vegas in a few months. Steam tells me I'm pushing 3000 hours of playing New Vegas. :stare:

After getting to Novac I always beeline to that cave to get Ratslayer. At the end I'm always carrying the holorifle and This Machine.

Something that only just occurred to me after an ungodly number of hours paying New Vegas and the DLCs is that syncing dialog with the face/mouth of NPCs must be a big expense.

So in the base game there's Mr House, who you only talk to as a static image on a terminal. Legate Lanius has a bigass helmet that covers his face. In Dead Money you have mute Christine and all your interactions with Elijah are over loudspeakers or a terminal. In Honest Hearts Joshua's face is covered in bandages. In OWB there isn't a single NPC that actually speaks to you in human form. In Lonesome Road the only person you talk to is Ulysses and he's got that rebreather mask.

Anyway, pretty cool that they managed to do this in a way that wasn't glaringly obvious (to me at least).

34 is, well, not fun, but the pressure to keep moving makes it a nice (?) change of pace. A couple of playthroughs ago I finally got to the armory and killed the ghouls inside with grenades. I raced around picking up loot as my RAD level was maxing out but couldn't find the All American (the main reason I went down there) so I booked it back out. Right after getting outside I ran into a group of geckos and found out Boone had decided the All American was boss and had picked it up.

I always drag as much stuff as I can out of Dead Money but the Holorifle is the only thing I ever use. I never even bother to go back to the bunker for the free chips at the terminal thing. I'm almost always carrying the Holorifle for the rest of the game though.

I never have used drugs in FO3 or New Vegas. I think because the penalties for doing so in Fallout 1&2 were so harsh. Same with melee. I've never played the newer games as a melee character because I have bad memories of battles in 1&2 taking forever because I had to chase enemies all over the place.

I should do a drug addicted melee run in New Vegas sometime to get over this.

Mines must have been a design challenge. I mean, by their nature you aren't supposed to see them. But you have to give the player feedback otherwise it's just dickish. I remember the first time I ran into a mine in FO3 and it was in grass or otherwise invisible so I couldn't figure out why I kept getting instakilled. I guess the beeping is the only way you can make it work in a gameplay sense.

That said, gently caress satchel charges in Lonesome Road.

I've only ever used mines when I'm replaying an encounter and know what's coming so I can lay an ambush. It feels like cheating but can be satisfying. The first time I met Lanius I got my rear end handed to me so I reloaded and left a long trail of mines he'd have to go through to chase after me.

I was doing the NCR mission from Forlorn Hope in a replay and thought, "Instead of wasting the Legion guys that spawn and getting bad Legion rep I'll just haul rear end to Helios and they'll chase me. Then I'll let the NCR at Helios take care of them." The Legion guys turned back at the highway rather than pursuing me further and running into the NCR dudes. I love the level of planning for scenarios that went into this game.
