How often does TAL recycle material? I could have sworn that I heard the "we've dated a decade, let's see other people" story from a couple weeks ago, as well as the adopted felon story from this week. Was I the only person to notice those?

Last week the whole episode was a repeat wasn't it? That happens pretty often. But yeah every now and then there's one segment of a new episode that I'm sure has been repeated. I know I'd already heard the story from a few weeks ago about the guy falling off the pier, getting his shorts stuck on a nail and exposing his penis.

I really wish they'd tack on a "This is a repeat" on the podcast version. I do usually recognize the repeats immediately but sometimes it takes me 20 minutes and then I get annoyed.

Feminism is a socialist, anti-family, political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.
I usually delete podcast episode off my phone after a few days to make space because I listen to probably 2 dozen.

Yeah, they do repeat a lot. Ah well. They were asking for money last week. I should probably end some so they can branch out a bit more.

This week's episode, Surrogates, was chilling. It exists in that weird space between denial, abuse, love, change, and stasis.

I know the story about the "Caminata Nocturna" had a serious tone, but that pretend border crossing sounds fun as gently caress. 200 pesos is 15$, which is insanely cheap for the amount of production value the trek seemed to have.

AAHHHHHHH!!!!
^^^ well they did mention that none of the actors were getting paid, so 200 pesos is not really a fair price.

Just got around to listening to the latest episode, and it's one of my favorite shows they've done. The second story about the people from the US living in Mexico particularly resonated as I immigrated to the US as a 4 year old from China because my dad was going to graduate school here, and it would've sucked rear end if I had to move back after living here for a few years. But the story about Trouble was also unexpectedly deep.

As someone currently in discussions with my girlfriend about whether or not either of us wants to have kids (I kinda don't), this week's episode was fantastic for pushing my viewpoint. Jesus. And yeah, in addition to that kid being a horrible monster like a real life "We Need To Talk About Kevin", if he continues that way, I bet you the mother is going to get a whole lot of scrutiny from the community assuming it's just her terrible parenting skills that made him that way.

Yeeeah. I foresee a lot of therapy in the future for the other two kids. Assuming the psychopath kid doesn't end up killing one of them.

Edit: Also, on the mother's blog, she comes off a lot less sympathetic than she did on the show. Plus it's awfully designed.

I see no one has said anything about this weeks episode. I experienced it last night on a late drive back from Passover, and it was hands down one of the most insane episodes of TAL that I've listened to in a long time. I sort of want to listen to it again now that I'm not groggy and driving for a while so that I can process the whole thing.

Edit: I'm specifically referring to the final section of "Tarred and Feathered," but hearing that woman from the section about libel talk about how the guy was being "lusty" was such a bizarre thing to hear late at night.

Yes, that woman sounded like such an over-the-top caricature I couldn't believe it.

The pedophile story was definitely interesting. I talked to my wife, who's a counselor, because what that kid's first counselor did seemed incredibly unethical (telling his mom without consent), but apparently the legality of such an action differs from state to state. The rest of the story was very intriguing and heartbreaking. I think what the guy was doing is quite admirable.

That was my thought as well at first, but when they got into the murkiness of reporting laws I understood her position better. Also, given what that one support group guy said about the massive depression he was going through before he found the support group, I imagine Adam would have faced the same thing had his mother not been told.

It's amazing how rumors spread in a small town like that. Makes you feel really bad for that man, losing his fiancee' and then being shunned by the whole town when they should have been rallying around him. It makes me wonder if the rumor got legs because it's so much easier for people to comfortably hate someone then be uncomfortable in sharing their grief.

The mentality of "if it's written down, it must be true!" explains so much about how this country operates that I'm surprised I've never heard it stated outright like that until now.

And yes, that was a really really good episode and I'm not sure which segment struck me harder. Even the intro story about the Irish militia actually tarring & feathering a guy for encroaching on their drug turf was crazy!

"Call for Help" was one of the worst episodes I've heard in a while. I only got a few minutes into each segment before skipping them. The middle one was the worst; it just seemed like a cheap plug for that woman's new podcast. I started going through my Moth queue ad I've ignored it for a while due to the 20 minutes of ads every radio hour episode (funny that the ad time seems so much shorter when it's on the radio) and it's amazing how many stories amount to "I went on this vacation and it was cool" or "I bought this neat thing." It's like every awful one time date I've been on where the girl has one story from years ago that isn't interesting no matter how you tell it.

It's funny because I performed at a story slam event and there were a ton more amazing stories there but they never pick up on the good ones for the show. Being a celeb, transgender, octogenarian or having cancer seems to be the criteria for being picked up if you're not a published author.

There's a lot of "my sister had cancer" or stories as well, or "I adopted a baby the end" stories. I think it fools a lot of people because the story teller will sometimes show a lot of emotion while telling it, but if you think about it it's just an unremarkable story being told by someone that it didn't even happen to.
