I'm wearing Havel's Armor and the Steel protection ring. I can tank hits from most attacks bosses throw at you like a pro. My end is the highest stat I have, and I'm using the Black Tower Shield; I rarely run out of stamina. It's a great feeling going toe to toe with some of the enemies in this game and just beat your way into victory.

Havel's set gives you so much poise that you will probably not be knocked on your rear end. This is an exceptional advantage against bosses like Four Kings.

Gold-hemmed robes offer really nice protections for their weight. Also, under 50% weight is still very mobile if you are getting good protection from the added armor. With 40 end, I am wearing a mixture of full upgraded black-plate + some havel armor and am still well below 50% with my weapons, shield and casting foci.

Because I remember I had to create a Japanese PSN account just so I could play Street Fighter 4 with other people close by instead of people back in the States. For a company that was once pioneering Sony sure seems incompetent when it comes to setting up simple common sense networking.

The robes offer a good amount of protection against physical attacks (and much better non-physical protection than most heavier armors I've seen). The lack of poise means you'll get a few stunlock deaths, but other than that they are great. However I don't think they can be upgraded so they may eventually be outclassed by other armors. The big advantage of heavy armor in Dark Souls isn't the added protection, it's the poise that lets you ignore hits. Also: even as a light armor character, I can't emphasize enough the importance of using a greatshield. I was using an upgraded regular shield (the tower shield that knights start off with), but late-game sword & board enemies wouldn't be stunned from attacking me when I was blocking. I switched to an upgraded Eagle shield and now they do get block-stunned. This makes fighting them much, much easier--some of the later enemies have very few truly "safe" openings other than block-stun.

It's not just you, a lot of people seem to think like this (listen to Vinny in the Giantbomb quick look for example). Dodging is one way to play, but it has limits if you don't realize that it is totally viable and sometimes necessary to stick on some heavy armor + a shield and tank some poo poo. In my opinion it is actually much easier to play an END heavy character and just block the majority of the blows that come at you. Of course you do want some mobility for the exceptionally heavy hits. The problem with dodge is there is always that circumstance where you swear you dodged, yet the game still says you were whacked for your whole life bar and you just have to

Where do I go after killing Capra Demon (MOTHERFUCKER), Havel (MOTHERFUCKERER) and getting the key to The Depths? I can't seem to find the location of the Depths, and I don't know where to go. Visiting the forest scares the hell out of me with the crystal golem things and something that shoots out water spouts that TK said golems in a single hit. Are there any goodies down there? Also Havel Ring is awesome because it lets my Warrior run around in full Elite Knight gear like it ain't no thang and Poise is ridiculously important apparently.

I have 30 end and use an Eagle shield with a nearly impenetrable block (against S&O I could completely block any of their attacks, even overhand hammer smashes if I had a full end bar). I should clarify that I don't try and dodge every single attack at this point in the game, my shield does about 90% of the work for me in the average fight and I have about 6 different spears that I switch between depending on the enemy. There's just a disconnect to me between END heavy and using heavy armor. If I go heavy on end I can block a crazy amount of attacks and if I use light armor I retain full mobility, so I'm basically a speedy tank. The only times I ever get knocked down is if it's a huge attack that I should have dodged or if I get careless and get crushed through my block because I wasn't managing my endurance. Obviously you take hits playing a heavy poise character, but it has the advantage of being able to chug a Eustus Flask with impunity. Good poise means you never stagger and can drink right in the middle of a boss swing a hammer into your face. This is what I'm starting to think also. I played Demon's Souls as a knight but consistently got hosed because that game punished tanks. So I started Dark Souls as a wanderer only to find that my former build seems much more viable. Just pump your endurance and get a good shield. Eventually you can block nearly anything and you have the mobility to avoid the things you can't block (or bypass your shield with magic damage). Does anyone know if the Silver Knight Spear can be upgraded to a Lightning SKS? That thing is like a combination Halberd/Spear and it completely destroys everything (even better than my Lightning Winged Spear). I need to find more Twinkling Titanite to upgrade it.

I'm curious does anyone here play by relying heavily on riposte? I almost never counter-attack because even though I can do it 90% of the time with practice. That 10% of the time you take a full hit with no block doesn't seem to be worth it, especially considering you have to learn the timing somewhat for every enemy. It seems to be that it is way more reliable to just straight up block and attack when they are staggered after a miss. Interested to know if anyone uses this mechanic regularly to progress through the game though.

I tried it for a little bit but the window for a parry is just too small and the counter-stabs are slower in most cases than just killing an enemy the regular way, because you have to go through the SLOW-MO ANIMATION every single time.

The catacombs are horrible. I think it's a mixture of not having a divine weapon and the finicky layout, but after dieing to the knight in the tunnels and not being able to kill the statue I've run off for now. If you follow the boulders' path all the way instead of veering left where the trap elevator is, you'll find the ring. There's another good ring in Sen's Fortress that increases your defense against physical attacks. It's in a room behind a serpent mage in the very first boulder pathway you encounter. There's also a third ring in there which boosts your fire defense. It's on the rooftop.

The catacombs are kind of odd because you're far more likely to go there first at the start of the game instead of the "correct" path up the side of the cliff and I think a lot of people get a really bad first impression based on that. I've seen a shitload of youtube playthroughs where people end up there right off the bat and they're just throwing themselves at it over and over thinking it's the only path. Then again, the entire game is a jumble of paths that branch into each other, so I guess that's a good introduction lesson in "trying to get through places you're not supposed to be in yet 101". There are two fundamental flaws you have to deal with on the gold trimmed robes. 1) You can't upgrade them 2) You give up poise for that slot. If you can live with those two things it works amazingly, but you have to realize that it will never get better as the game goes on. If you want a good middle ground between the super light good defense no poise armor of the gold trimmed stuff and the "oh my god look at my defense/poise but gently caress my back" feeling of Havel's/Stone armor, then look at upgrading the elite plate armor. The breastplate weighs 11.something, has 20 poise and I've upgraded mine to +7 and it's got near 70 physical defense. My strength character with havel's ring uses the Elite knight helm +5, elite knight armor+7, gold trimmed legs/arms, hollow soldiers shield and a *motherfucking demon greataxe* (22 wt) and is still doing the medium roll.
