My faith and intelligence are both under 11 at the moment though. You meet a trainer for miracles pretty early on, he's just hanging out in the Firelink shrine. For sorcery/pyromancy, you have to rescue the trainers first (both of them are fairly easy to find if you look around - they're in the first few areas you're going to visit). Your starting class really only determines your beginning stats and equipment; you aren't tied to that role at all if you want to branch out. I'd recommend at least picking up some pyromancy, since lots of them have no intelligence requirement to use (though int does affect their damage). Grab enough attunement for 2 slots (which is like, 12 or something), and that gives you a nice fallback for enemies that are really resistant to your weapons. It's really easy to just put a casting item as a secondary in one of your hands, and then pop it out to throw a few spells. Man, what a game. I've been going at it pretty hard this weekend. I farmed a lot in Anor Londo and got to Soul Level 65, with a full set of Silver Knight armor at +2, a +5 Black Knight Halberd, and a +5 Black Knight Greatsword, along with whichever Crest shield I needed at the time (the Crest shields are particularly resistant against specific damage types). Normally in a game when you farm for 2-3 hours you are significantly ahead of the power curve. Not here. I walked by a pair Hollow Soldier in the Parish, and they jumped at me and comboed me for half my life despite my Silver Knight armor and 25 Vitality. However, that farming did pay off when I went to get Artorias' Covenant (it's a ring not a Covenant) so that I could do New Londo. I walked in to Sif's room with a Stone Greatshield (68ish Stability) and my +5 Black Knight Halberd (345 Attack + another 180 from it's Str Parameter Bonus) and proceeded to easily block his attacks and kill him in 4 hits. Made his soul into the sexiest shield in the game, Artorias' Greatshield. 88 Stability and great all around resists. Now I have the perfect offense and the perfect defense. The second half of the game is crazy though. The difficulty goes wayyyy up. I found Duke's Archives to not be that bad, but the boss is brutal(Hope you like Curse). Tomb of the Giants was SO PAINFUL (especially getting the Large Divine Ember, 5 Giant Skeletons in a TINY rear end ROOM: Good loving Luck, I ended up just suiciding to get it) but the boss was really easy for me, since I could just block everything he did and I killed him in like 10 hits. This game is so good, I can't wait to try out different characters or play Online (I wanted to do an offline run through first).

Is it a big deal if I accept it then immediately ditch it when I get another one? I'm aiming for gravelords. You actually don't need to enter the covenant to learn miracles. He'll offer to let you join, but if you refuse, you can just talk to him again a few times and he'll give you a menu where "purchase items" is one of the options (that's where he sells you miracles). The locations of dudes to rescue: Pyromancy: He's in a side room in the Depths - in the area that looks like a really nasty kitchen. Sorcery: He's in a locked room in the lower undead Burg - you'll hear him calling out for help if you get near the door. You need the residence key from the merchant in the beginning to open the door - the master key doesn't work. You won't meet either of them until after ringing the first bell, but you can find both of them very soon after that. LoG posted:I know this thread is moving fast but could anyone please answer this? I don't want to say they're GREAT, but they do seem to be more viable than in Demon's Souls. Much more of the enemies in Dark Souls are capable of being backstabbed/riposted. Even some really tough minibosses are vulnerable to them, like the giant club guy or the various knights. You will probably want to have a more heavy hitting weapon to use against bosses though.

Honestly all you need is a decent amount of END and a good upgraded shield and you should be able to handle anything within reason. Also there really should be some database that shows average SL of players for a given boss/zone so I know how much I can push the grind.

I heard loud snoring over by the pool in Firelink Shrine, but could not find where it was coming from. This is after ringing the first bell. What just happened? Edit: Also, there's an item on top of the highest building on Firelink shrine. If you step off the elevator early you can land on the roofs near it, but it's still too high to reach. How do you get this?

LoG posted:I know this thread is moving fast but could anyone please answer this? I've been playing one. Basically you will destroy all the normal enemies (your dagger stunlocks most and will 1-2 hit backstab kill, and every third hit makes them bleed for 1/3 their max HP I think). The only downside is enemies that are resistant to being hitstunned and enemies you can't backstab...and bosses. I used my dagger up until just before ringing the second bell then switched to a katana +7 which is ridiculous, so as long as you don't mind mixing it up a little you should be fine.

LoG posted:I know this thread is moving fast but could anyone please answer this? I'm pretty far through the game and there's not much reason I see why a backstabby character wouldn't work. There's a few enemies I've either been unable to locate the sweet spot for or that don't have one, but those are what I'm running into now. By the time you reach that point, you should have a variety of strategies and gear to support them. The one truth I have found is that dodging is (almost) never a bad strat, but they will occasionally put you in situations where you can't, and you will need a different approach.

I wanna make sure I have the weapon upgrade system down in this one. Titanite shards to upgrade the base weapons to +5, then you ascend them to one of 4(?) different damage types using embers, right? Then do you use those embers to upgrade the weapon from +1 to +10?

Cool thing about those guys is they hurt their buddies a lot when they attack. LoG posted:I know this thread is moving fast but could anyone please answer this? That said, in a more general way, dex characters I would say are probably comparatively stronger than str based characters. Demons souls you wound up a lot of times just using the biggest highest damage weapon you can find (meat cleaver, large sword of moonlight, regalia) because enemies really didn't dodge or block in any significant fashion outside of world 1. In dark souls there are a lot of enemies that will block you, dodge you, riposte you. With the bigger and slower weapons it's a lot easier for them to just tumble around you and slap you around. The dex focused weapons (pretty much any curved blade, piercing sword, and spear) are faster, don't soak up nearly the endurance of the big weapons, and they are actually capable of doing very respectable damage. Most of the later enemies won't die in one hit anyway no matter how big of a fuckoff axe you have. Riposting/backstabbing in general are a lot more useful in this game compared to demons souls because there are a lot more enemies you can riposte/backstab. They even increased the parry window for shields and daggers. Greatshields are basically a thing of the past unless you have 40+ strength and don't mind hauling around 10wt worth of shield and never parrying ever again. *edit* For reference, my main character right now is pretty much pure fuckoff high strength with as big of a weapon as possible. My thief that is soul level 20ish feels a lot more consistently powerful than my str guy was at her level.

Okay, so, I just rang the second bell, then I went down into the Demon Ruins, killed Ceaseless Discharge, and I joined the Spider Covenant even though I acidentally killed the eggsac guy who speaks to you, as I am a pyromancer and want sweet fire magics. So, is there a shortcut out of this bitch, or am I stuck making my way back through Blighttown? Because gently caress that. Also, there is a dead end in the area with the White Spider and her bonfire, and the orange messages say it is a illusory wall, but I cannot pass it. It does look suspicious, anyone know what is up there?
