I've yet to play Demon's Souls, and am kind of interested in this game. As somebody who plays a lot of games such as "Ghosts 'n Goblins" and more recently stuff like "Dungeons of Dredmor," and thus loves playing games where I die constantly, is this game right for me? The only barrier I can think of that would detract would be controls, as I do enjoy that "simple-to-learn, impossible-to-master" design of game. Are the controls for either game that elaborate?
You picked pretty much the two best games to compare it to, because its often compared to oldass NES platformers like Castlevania and Ghosts'n Goblins, and it has sort of the same reward structure as roguelikes (but arguably less punishing).

Man, I was all set to make a rolly rear end in a top hat thief, but hearing this is seriously starting to put some doubt in my mind. So many builds that were kinda gimmicky in Demon's seem completely viable now.

Its not selling quite as well on 360 as PS3, and you'll be missing out on the Japanese community entirely, so I'd say there'll probably be half to two thirds as many players on the Xbox. Beyond a certain point, it doesn't really matter how many people are playing though.

Agreeing with ErIog, but to be less hostile, I suggest popping a humanity and summoning a phantom buddy if you're having trouble. There are tons of people before every even remotely difficult part volunteering to help you out, and there's nothing wrong with making use of them. Worst case scenario they distract the boss long enough for you to stab it in the back.

It's not my controller either, I tried using a different one and the same issue kept happening.
This is actually a pretty major bug people have been complaining about since the Japanese release. It doesn't happen that often, but it loving sucks when you get murdered because your attack got buffered for a couple of seconds. Really hoping they patch that, along with some of the few other major bugs.

Will it actually screw me later on? I suppose I am early enough in that I could still restart. Go with a more burly class instead of an agil class (or at least go with a magic class - didn't realize it would be ages until I could find my first spell), etc.

My goal this time is to be a magic-throwing metal god that, once out of magic, just rushes in and kicks people dramatically off tall things.
I'm a spear and shield Wanderer that uses magic, miracles, and pyromancy. I also have <25% equip burden, so I can dodge and run around like a jackass all I want. You'll be fine, there's pretty much no eventuality in the game where the only solution is to restart.

Wanderer is probably the second best jack of all trades class, behind Deprived. You start with some decent gear to boot!

Yeah, having other people in that fight helps a lot. Try splitting them up, attacking one while your phantom buddies work on the other. There's a blacksmith under the bonfire there if you want to upgrade your armor.

PvP just doesn't seem to work in any capacity
Most people get really jumpy whenever they see a catalyst or pyro hand come out, so you can't expect them to stand still while you're casting. In PvP you need to bait your opponent to attack, or get them in a situation where they have no way to dodge, and then cast your spell. Playing a spellcaster is more about mindgames and strategy than just bruteforce chopping dudes up.

Its true that PvP isn't really that balanced though, and some builds just straight up are not viable. Its supposed to be kind of a diversion instead of some huge competitive thing.

I don't really get the point that you're trying to make, Dan, but if you're arguing that the archers are mechanically bankrupt or whatever you're way off base. Like most other encounters in the game, there is a valuable lesson to be learned on that ramp. Up to that point you haven't really been forced to consider invincibility frames, or that particular kind of movement in general. Once everything clicks and you can consistently charge up that ramp and roll through attacks, you've learned something mildly revelatory about the mechanics of the game. Its something that can really pay off on the later bosses and NG++++ runs.

Of course, Dark Souls is not a sadistic game, so they give you the freedom to solve that encounter in a bunch of different ways.

homeless snail
