Goddamit, I can't decide what kind of class I'm going to play. I need everyone's input here to come to some sort of consensus.

One thing's for sure, I'm starting as deprived with the locket because I am doing this right.

I'm not wondering what the optimal min-max class is because that's completely the wrong way to play (eg: Ilkar's mirden hammer faith build). I'm just wondering what everyone else is doing. gently caress, chances are I'll probably play all different permutations of dexxer, str-build, magic-surprise sex because in DeS, all of these we're fun for different reasons. I'm just at a personal impasse of how to spec myself initially.

Playing this game is a test in my ability to deal with weird targeting right now. I have died more than once to how clumsy the targeting system functions now. Probably my only complaint so far though.

Logging out of and back into PSN will cause the game to have to attempt to connect to a server again, so it's likely that it might pick a new one. This is pretty common with anything connecting to one of a list of servers, shouldn't be any different for Dark Souls.

That sounds reasonable, I just always assumed that characters were stored on servers like an MMO but I don't know much about PSN architecture. Anyways thanks for the replies y'all.

My interpretation of the New Londo/Kaathe thing is a little different. So the way I saw it was Gwyn was this supposedly magnanimous leader who hosed the dragons and split his power around so that his servants (Four Kings, Seath, Gwyndolin/fake-titty-monster-sister) could benefit from it in some way. He just sort of willy-nilly used his supposedly ill-begotten power from the dragons to build his ideal world; not to mention his supposed betrayal of his 1st son, the one who's statue was broken on the altar of sunlight.

Kaathe, being an eternal primordial serpent and all, saw the harm of Gwyn's reckless use of his power such as the people who were affected with the darksign as well as the rampant spread of the weird 'humanity' sprite. So to counter Gwyn's bullshit, Kaathe saw a way to fix things by indoctrinating the Four Kings of New Londo to help dethrone Gwyn. He also gave them a means to gather up the humanity sprite and to get rid of them.

Gwyn, being the jealous, spiteful representation of Zeus or the Old Testament Jehovah, flooded the city to "control" the "threat" of the Darkwraiths, the Four Kings' personal army. I just think that's how it went because of the way the game tries to give you a sort of emotional moment when you finally figure out what all that mushy stuff on the floor of Lower New Londo really is (it's people trying to escape the flood Gwyn sent) So the way I see it, Gwyn tried to build his own little happy world and it fell apart because of his hubris.

So gently caress Gwyn and gently caress the flame; me, Kaathe and Solaire are going to ride into the sunset on a horse made
of Humanity and rule man with a space shield in one hand and a pyromancy flame in the other

I get the feeling Nito was associated with the Primordial beings in someway simply because of his desire to consume. Otherwise he's just a typical Lich with a bunch of Necromancer buddies. I suppose there's something to him being the "First of the Dead" as saying that he was the cause of the Darksign appearing, but there's nothing to support that.

But isn't that the whole point? You use Lightning crafted weapons in NG and NG+, until their stats no longer cut it, then you're able to switch to elemental weapons that are actually enhanced by your now-high stats in NG++, etc. Otherwise why make elemental weapons?

Theoretically, yes, but I think someone did the math a while ago and it appeared that a normal spear +15 would only outdamage a +5 lightning spear after about 60 dexterity I think. Even then, I don't believe that it would be that much more due to the diminishing returns on stats in the long run.

e: Also many more things have high physical defense than lightning defense, so probably lightning weapons will be more effective until god knows what level. Its stupid, and From should feel stupid for doing it. <>

I think you may have missed something. We're talking about Demon's Spear, which actually DOES lightning damage AND it adds a parameter bonus based on your stats. So I'm guessing the threshhold for it surpassing the Lightning Spear isn't nearly as high.

What I'm saying is stop complaining that its base stats at +5 isn't as high as your Lightning Spear's stats at +5, because it's meant to be used later when your stats don't suck.

The parameter bonus isn't that high so my point still stands that scaling needs to be fixed and the Demon Spear should be better.

So anyway, is the story going to be a bit retconned?
I mean, both Artorias and Hawkeye were dead, right? And now Hawkeye's not even an enemy, but an NPC.

Eh, Artorias was never buried, even though his grave was made he didn't die in the Abyss of the Four Kings, he just never came back. Sif was just his bro or something and kept his sword handy.

I think the speculation is that Artorias betrayed Gwyn after learning about the real hosed-up way he 'dealt' with New Londo's alliance with Kaathe (by flooding the poo poo out of it and killing literally everyone trying to escape New Londo). So after going into the abyss and chatting with Kaathe (who I'm still convinced is the 'good guy' in the game) he convinced him to work for him.

I suppose that this new stuff is going to explore what happened to him after he took up the covenant with Kaathe. I'm more than excited to have a bit more of the lore for this game fleshed out. I've never been as enthralled by a games lore than this, simply because everything we know about the world is hard earned and requires a lot of speculation.

e: What I really want to know about, is what is all this poo poo about the "King's Crown" and "Gotta get dat King's Crown and stoke the fire" stuff? I guess it's just a flowery way of saying that you become the boss when you beat Gwyn, but who knows.

The most fun time I have in this game is starting new characters. Even though I know pretty much everything there is to know about the game, starting a new character just feels good. Hey, question. How can you make it so that PvP in this game isn't laggy unplayable bullshit? Is this just how people do PvP? I've beaten the game several times over and done a bunch of Co-op but every single PvP experience is literally 3-5 seconds of lag between what I see and then all of a sudden lightning damage. I don't even know. PS3 btw, open NAT and all the jazz.

Thanks in advance.

MoonwalkInvincible posted:

3-5 seconds is pretty extreme, and if you're not exaggerating, then it might be an actual issue with your connection. No idea how to fix it since I suck at that sort of thing, but it's definitely not normal.

But yeah, normal PvP tends to have at least a half-second of lag at all times, but it really stops bothering you after you play for a bit since it's pretty easy to account for and expect, aside from those rare instances where your opponent is so laggy that you literally can't see them moving around (just standing still between sudden bursts of teleporting).

It seems to vary between each opponent. Mostly it seems like there is bizarre priority in which attacks take precedent. Like, any defensive action (rolling, ripost, block) all seem to take backseat to any offensive action. For example, one guy who was flipping around everywhere got hit by a random spear and it seemed like he avoided it with the flip. But I actually hit him. After that, it appeared to me that I was blocking something this guy did, but after it appeared like I blocked all of it, my health bar disappeared then the guy did the actions. I don't even know, but this seems like a really poor experience, which is a shame because I really enjoyed demon's souls pvp.

Rexicon1
Oct 9, 2007

MoonwalkInvincible posted:

It sounds like you are getting an above-average amount of lag, though there are other various PvP things that someone might attribute to lag if they don't know about it, like dead angling (a way of hitting someone while they are blocking, based on which direction you are facing). There are some funky priority things in terms of attacking and dodging, and other stuff like rolling through an attack still giving you bleed/poison buildup and playing elemental animations. Along with some of the lag quirks, it's a completely different game from single-player.

If you want to get an idea of what normal PvP should look like with a normal amount of lag, look up some videos of other people PvPing on youtube.

Fair answer I suppose, it just seems like an opposite experience from the rest of the game, and perhaps not one that for me.

e: Anyone think that the PC version pvp will be more true to the rest of the game? I at least have a lil hope that japan learns how the internet works soon.

ee: Was standing still and then got invaded. Died before the dude even spawned into my world. That can't be right.
