Sorry der juicen, PS3. I FINALLY made it to the bottom of Blighttown! Only to find out that I could not keep my friends with me. Apparently you have to dismiss your white phantom companions in order to light bonfires That makes me very sad. They were really helpful.

And I switched to Pyromancy instead of Miracles, since I couldn't find that lightning bolt miracle anyway and I didn't feel like pumping faith. God drat they have some neat spells. I found poison cloud, which seems great for pvp.

E/N post ahead...

I went to my favorite local small-time game store yesterday to pick up my pre-ordered game. I headed over on my lunch break, got there around noon and they still hadn't received their shipment. When I asked if they knew if they were getting in the special edition copies one of the employees said he checked and they weren't getting any then he was bold enough to confess that he had ordered the game on Amazon to ensure he got the special edition. WTF? remind me why I'm spending my money with you guys? I headed back to the shop after work at 5:30 and they told me they were sold out... but... I have a pre-order? blank stares... you know, I pre-ordered it to ensure I would receive a copy today? remember, I was here earlier today? The employees go confer amongst themselves, look up my order, verify I have money down on it, and then one of them tells the other ones that apparently whoever took my money (iirc the one reprimanding the others) entered the game as Dark SouL, not Dark SoulS, so when they checked to see how many copies they needed to hold they didn't see me and went ahead and sold the copy they thought was extra.

How do they resolve this? They send one of the employees next door to Best Buy to buy a copy and bring it back to sell it to me... thanks guys.

I have the game now though at least and I was hoping to find some kind of recommendation on the best starting class? I remembered liking the big f-off swords in Demon's Souls so maybe I just go for Knight? although mobility is a pretty handy thing as well. Any opinions on best starting class?

Warrior is a great choice. You start with a bigger sword than the knight (compensating for something?) but lighter armor, so you can kinda roll. The warrior just looks hella cool too, in my opinion.

Wow, no wonder the game feels so sparsely populated. Despite selling much less, in Demon's Souls I saw way more white phantoms running around, was invaded more frequently, easier to find someone invade (I just used 4 of the invasion stone things and all of them failed, which still uses up the item btw), etc. That's because Demon's Souls was server based, so you were seeing everyone online basically. So whenever you set up a place to summon a blue phantom with your friend, you could find his sign easily.

Dark Souls is apparently not server based, it's some kind of ping based P2P. You aren't seeing everyone online, just some people that would have low latency if they joined your world. You can drop a sign in specific space and your friend still might not see it, and overall you just have less of a chance of interacting with other players. This is incredibly stupid, and it greatly diminishes what was (for me) the most interesting part of Demon's Souls.

God dammit, THAT explains it. That pisses me off to no end and makes me consider returning this game. No wonder it feels deserted. The loving Demon's Souls servers are still up, for christ's sake! Why not just use those?! Why use loving P2P bullshit like every other awful game...ugh...I want to send an angry letter but i know they won't read it, and it is too late to change...son of a bitch.

... Really? Really?

YES! They have screwed up beyond belief on the multiplayer, which was easily the best part of Demon's Souls. I know that it is dumb to get angry about something like this but I feel as though this could have been the perfect game, absolutely the best game ever, but it is ruined by this revelation. I was already disappointed by the lack of vagrants and gravelords, telling myself that the playerbase only needed time...but I'm beginning to doubt EVERYTHING they told us about this game. I left a helm on the ground for an hour this afternoon, and nothing happened to it. Undoubtedly this is because the P2P could not find anyone. I'm very sorry I feel so strongly about this. Like I said, it could have been a perfect game, that is why I get so angry. The choice to use awful P2P has ruined a major aspect of the game for me, the multiplayer. I am very angry, I apologize to the people who will laugh at me for getting angry, but it is just how I feel and I cannot help it. I'm not sure how long I have to return this game, but I'm going to take a serious look at whether From deserves the money for this almost-masterpiece. This is a deadly flaw, in my opinion. (or Bandai-Namco, sorry, it may not be From's fault...in either case, my point still stands)

I'm pretty sure dropped items don't become vagrants in your own game like that. I think once the dropped item is deleted by an rea reset (dying or quitting the game or whatever) it'll pop up a vagrant in someone else's game. As for gravelords, that probably is because of the playerbase, most people seem to be busy getting killed by the gargoyles right now.

I have seen one, or at least what I assume was one, in an early stage. It was not a phantom yet, but there was an item (blood red moss) sitting on the ground underneath the dragon bridge. It was not dropped by an enemy, and it appeared as a rotating bag. I didn't drop it (I hadn't collected any yet and in any case have no idea how to drop items), so it had to have come from someone else. It's a shame I picked it up instead of letting it continue its journey, but there was no way to tell what it was until I did, and it might have been something good, dammit.

In fact, I think that's a major flaw with the vagrant system. It's super awesome in concept, but in reality if you see an item sitting on the ground, and especially if you can't tell what it is without picking it up, you're going to pick it up.

I didn't think that was even how the vagrant system worked?

Personally, I really like the look of the Elite Knight Gauntlets and Leggings on the Hard Leather Armor. If you upgrade all of them and get your Endurance up to 22 or so, you can roll while still having a good protection value.

For the people yelling foul on the Derk Souls vs Demon's Souls multiplayer system:

Dark Souls multiplayer works exactly the same as Demon's Souls.

Both use P2P matchmaking via PSN services.

The only thing Demon's Souls uses a central server for are bloodstains, ghosts, messages, and world tendency. Everything else was P2P, and is exactly the same in Dark Souls.

In Dark Souls, bloodstains, ghosts, messages, etc have all been moved over to the P2P system as well. The sin stuff (Book of Guilty) uses PSN game leaderboards.

I'm calling bullshit on this. The proof is in the pudding. There is almost no multiplayer activity in the game, and there is no opening server message...it all adds up. Put up some evidence, Gibbed.

Whether it's due to gameplay mechanics (you were always going to be alive at some points no matter what in Demon's Souls vs. unhollowing being completely optional in Dark Souls) or the fact that there is no more central server, the online element of this game is total dogshit.

Needing to be alive to invade is weird but not inherently bad, and invasion items being one time use is also annoying but not a deal breaker. But the fact that you can lay down white soul signs for hours and never be summoned, or try to invade and have it fail pretty much every time is just horrible. Dark Souls is selling so much better than Demon's Souls did, so the online play should be better instead of worse. Maybe the majority of players don't care, but invading early and often was the most fun I had with Demon's Souls.

I agree. It is somewhat ruining the game for me.
