I only picked this game up last weekend and had only beat Demon's Souls once prior, no NG+. So far, I think all of the changes make sense, but overall everything feels.... easier? I'm having more trouble figuring out where to go next than in getting there. I miss the Nexus structure.

I thought this one was easier at first too, but after revisiting Demon's Souls, and destroying it without even breaking a sweat, I have to say that Dark Souls is definitely the more challenging of the two.

And it isn't because I was some sort of god at the first one either, I only went through it once when it came out and never touched it after that.

I can't agree with the Nexus comment in any shape or form though. I hate hub-world level layouts. What lazy rear end level design.

Maybe that's what it is, I'm just still coming down from being a superpowered sword-god and I haven't hit any real challenges yet.

I liked the Nexus for a number of reasons, but mainly because they bothered to tie it into the story. If it was just "here are the worlds go play them" I would agree with you, but it felt cool the way they explained it. YMMV. The world of Dark Souls is more interesting, but I am lazy and it's a pain in the rear end running from one side to the other.

Also, I loving HATED Demon's Souls until I started thinking of it like Armored Core. FROM makes great games once you get your head in the right place.

You have to use the orange soapstone after reading a message. I don't know why they made it so ridiculously inconvenient to rate or write messages, but it's one of the huge backwards steps they made from Demon's Souls, taking an awesome, unique feature and crippling it to the point of uselessness.

I guess maybe they fixed this in the patch, but in all likelihood, I'll be done with the game well before it comes to the US.

Wow that loving sucks, I don't want to expend an item to tell someone they did a good job expending their own item. The old message system was way better

I know the multiplayer has been changed, but exactly how many people are in my 'area' maximum? It seems like in Demon's there were ghosts all over the place, now I rarely if ever see anyone or even messages. Feels lonesome.

I was under the impression it was calculated similar to damage, i.e. chance to do bleed/toxic * multipliers - enemy resistance = chance of bleeding/toxin.

Chard
Aug 24, 2010

Huh. Not saying you're wrong, that makes a lot of sense, but I was able to get bleed on the undead in the asylum with the starting Wanderer sword, sometimes on the first hit, sometimes never. I'm not sure how that shakes out.

I just beat Queelag with the help of some awesome phantoms, is there an easy way back to Firelink or do I have to slog all the way back through Blighttown? I found that shortcut door in the Depths (down a ladder behind boxes), but I can't find the Blighttown side to open it.

Chard

I just went through that area for the first time, and while I can tell I missed a lot the main path is Down.

The blowgun guys don't seem to come back after you kill them once.

Drake Sword is loving awesome.

Can you be a tiny bit more specific about where the elevator is, please? I rang the bell, saw no other switches, got some nice rear end armor and died to Ceaseless Discharge. Which way?

Chard

poo poo, then I must have missed it somehow. Thanks, knowing where not to look helps too.

Now what's this about an elevator? Walking sucks.

Thanks, I think I can find that. I summoned my phantoms at the bonfire and bossrushed, didn't have time to look around.

It wasn't until my third character in Demon's Souls, a cheap-rear end caster, that I killed False King Allant. Don't feel bad.

I think I broke DeS on my first playthrough by grinding too much. 4 sub-boss and boss, 5 boss, and both Allants never. Even. Touched me. Just arrows forever until they are all dead.

I can't, though. I tried using it in the same spot but the option was crossed out.

Nope, I just ran back as Undead, couldn't get it, returned again as Human, couldn't get it, so I said gently caress it and summoned sunbro and beat O+S. Now I have a warp ring and bitch can just stay dead for all I care.

I love these games, and how obscure they are. I don't even mind screwing myself over from time to time. BUT, it pisses me right off when it doesn't even tell you what you did wrong. Makes me want to play through again a lot less.

In the Depths, is there any way to get back up past the waterslide, or do you have to plow ahead through Gaping Dragon/Blighttown once you go down it?

Chard

Man, I loved the Poison Swamp so much in Demon's Souls, I am so 110% glad to see the same exact goddamn thing make a glorious return in this game Blighttown isn't even that difficult, but it suffers even worse frame rate than the swamp did, and it's just ugly to look at.

e: Feenix, one thing I messed up on my first character was not leveling my weapons, like at all. This round, I'm avoiding leveling my character until I hit a wall, and until then putting all my souls into my weapon and shield. Seems to be working great so far.

I've been rolling around in dead form. Still feeling very new to this game (I was good at Demon's Souls way back when. Well, good enough.)

I have the Drake Sword, a decent shield, (the red and blue one) a Halberd I don't use much right now...

I suppose I could roll in as human but I just figured I'd waste it when I died. When I went through the fog door a second time the Gargoyle was already mid pounce and hosed me up before I knew what was up. I've freed the Spoken to the sun guy and freed the other dude. Where do I summon them? (I assume I need to be in human form for that?)

Last question: There's a Smith, Andre of Astora, I believe? What's that thing under him that shoots lightning. I peeked then ran away.

Burn a humanity and take Solaire of Astoria in with you, his sign is right at the fog gate. I see lots of player signs at the top of the elevator, too. It makes a huge difference.

edit: oh by the way, how many of you guys use backsteps versus back-rolls? I only occasionally try a backstep, and often get hit anyway, but I can't tell if its because the backstep didn't take me far enough back, or whether I did it too slow. I'm just too used to the timing of rolling.

Backstepping has exactly one use - making the person who just whiffed you feel like a fool.

Is it easier to head into Blighttown from Valley of the Drakes? Also, is there a shortcut so I don't have to keep walking from the Depths bonfire to the ladder down to Blighttown? I've found a door that seems to head in that direction, but it says it won't open from this side, and I can't find the other side.

also gently caress blighttown they're not even trying to hide the fact of how similar it is to Valley of the Defilement

THIS. gently caress Blighttown and the pig-raping hillbilly swamp monsters that live there.

As far as a shortcut, if you can kill the drakes it's probably faster to go through their valley. Prettier, anyway.

No matter what the 'official' name is, they are Shitlords to me from now on.

I'm really glad I bailed on the pyro I hosed up my stats on. I'm trying to really get into the RP side of the Thief I made this time, which means shitloads of backstabs, and poison arrows and poison mist. It's working very well so far - just sit back and watch the suckers die
