That was a Wanderer that Matt was playing second, but classes are more 'what do you want to start out as playing for the first few hours to familiarize yourself' than 'what do you want to be for the whole game'.

It really, really depends on what kind of character you want to make. Want a Bow? Go Hunter. Want a shield and weapon and heavy armour? Go Knight. Want magic? Go Sorcerer.

But you're never, ever locked into a path. It's criminally easy to change up what your character uses in these games.

this is very true but I will add that, at least in Demon's Souls, it was somewat easier to have your magic user become a fighter than vice-versa. The temple knight was both but it doesn't look like Dark Souls has an equivalent.

Fluted Armor, Purple Flame Shield, Adjudicator's Shield, Spiked Shield, Quality Winged Spear +2, Broad Sword, Compound Long/Short Bow, Cling Ring, Thief's Ring, Regen Ring, and some resistance rings. Looks like I've cleared 1-1/2, 2-1, and 4-1. Pretty sure when I stopped I had some grand plan, but right now I have no real goal other than not dying. Someone want to give me a goal, like hunt down a critical piece of equipment I'm missing?

You pretty much have to bite the bullet, pick a level, and beat it. The weapons you have now are pretty good, although there's a dragon longsword you can find in 2-2 that's very useful for worlds 3 and 5. Consider wearing armor thats light enough to let you do the quick roll.

Sometimes when you kill an enemy the soul "mist" that flwos out of them will be a color other than white. Black gives you humanity and gold gives you another estus charge.

So are there any ideas what some of those more obscure starting gifts do?

Is playing a thief right off the bat going to be suicide?

Thief looks like one of the more difficult starting classes simply due to daggers having such short range. That said if you can't make it far enough into the game to get a spear or longsword or whatever using your thief starting equipment then you have problems beyond your starting class.

If you want a dex focused character and don't care about using magic right away then the thief should be perfectly fine. None of the classes will lock you in to playing certain way like they would in, say, Diablo.

I seem to remember (possibly misremember) the game's director saying Dark Souls had over twices as many spells as Demon's Souls so that would be well over 30. I think Demon's Souls had 22 spells and 12 miracles.

They require different catalysts. Sorcery does magic damage and pyromancy does fire damage. I think miracles have lightning damage spells now.

Most weapons also scale in damage with your stats, strength and dex are the most common ones. But there are weapons that scale entirely with Dex (there were in Demon's anyway) so it should be doable.

Demon's Souls had a bunch of gear (and a few spells) that were either *only* for PvP, or primarily for PvP. The Scraping Spear and Acid Cloud are one obvious, super-irritating example, but there was also stuff like the Sword of Moonlight which outside of the occasional knight (like the Valley of Defilement boss), was primarily just used for one-shotting other players when they tried to block, Firestorm was better than Fireball for PvE but impossible to get off in PvP if your opponent was any good, etc. etc.

I thought the sword of moonlight was actually pretty bad against Garl Vinland since he had super high magic resistance, which is where most of his damage came from. Its huge range and shield ignoring traits made it amazing for world 1 though. Just don't use it against the bosses since it has really long animations.

You could dual wield 2 weapons in Demon's but I don't think it was ever actually a good idea. I beat Flamelurker while dual wielding halberds once for the hell of it, but I would have been a lot better off just 2-handing one of the halberds.

It's a huge club that takes 46 strength to wield (31 2-handed). You get it by killing the boss the first time you run into it before getting your weapon/shield/catalyst. If you want to kill it it's probably a lot easier if you take the firebomb gift.

Other bosses have weapons you can get from fighting them in certain ways, and some bosses have random drops.

I have the drake sword and I go in with firebombs, but neither seems to help much. The NPC draws their attention, which is nice, but he also draws them away from me physically, which makes it nearly impossible to hit them. Then he dies and I'm stuck with fighting both of them. They won't get far enough away from each other to make it feasible to hit either of them, and if I get bold and rush in I am always knocked down after one or two swings, which leads to certain death because it gives the other one a chance to block my escape route and prevent me from drinking my flask.

With all the people who were asking questions about where to go when I found the paths obvious, or how to beat the taurus demon who gave me no trouble, now asking about after that fight and nobody mentioning having trouble with it, I feel like maybe I'm being a huge dumb and missing some obvious way to deal with them?
