Benson Cunningham posted:

Bakker is the only author I like less than Terry Goodkind. His books are filled with unrealistic characters, everyone in the novel cries for a prolonged period every time they are alone, and the main character is so boring you might as well call him Grignir. It's like everyone in the world but Kellhus is a big, whiny baby.
This is true. In making Kellhus look like a hyper-genius he's made the rest of the cast look dumb as rocks and completely emotionally unaware.

quote:

In the last Bakker thread I had just finished his first Kellhus book, and I had a choice scene I could quote about a demon shooting a bucket of black cum in, on, an about a woman. Now I'll just leave you with that abridged version and beautiful mental picture.
People bring this up alot as in "heh. How's them apples now?" but really it happens twice in the first trilogy (as far as I read) and both times it is meant to revile you. The epilogue at the end of the second book was (for me) literally stomach-turning. And no-one's manhood glistens wetly.

Watts was pretty classy throughout, to be honest. He gave a great deal of leeway to Crackedmoon when she appeared on his blog and only wrote her off when she proved to be a completely worthless person who only wanted to score cheap personal points.

But yeah, they both should have left that awful website well alone and just ignored it. Never respond to negative criticism, and only respond sparingly to positive.

Personally I don't think he was obligated to go that far. What sexist lunatics write is not his responsibility and smearing by association is Not Cool.

On the "rabid animal" thing, I dunno, we're all people. If someone writes something unpleasant/offensive then people are allowed to be angry and should be given some leeway when writing things that should have been phrased more eloquently, if at all.

To pin my colours to the mast: People saying "jeez Bakker needs to stop responding to this poo poo" are absolutely right. And if Watts makes a second post on the subject that'll be a real mistake as well. I agree with whoever it was who said that Bakker's work is a failed experiment that is worthy of some interest and discussion, and I will finish up his second trilogy when he's done with it. But I'm no huge fan, I know nothing about him personally and I haven't followed his blogowar at all.

The thing I take away from this (although really I'm just affirming a prior belief) is that we here are all SA posters who are practised at having these passive-aggressive post-it note wars about our opinions. Watts and Bakker are not forums posters (as Watts just eloquently demonstrated by volunteering to monitor and censor every comment posted on his blog), hell they're not even of our generation. Writing really horrible things about them will, in all likelihood, actually affect them personally and they will respond in a less rational and more emotional way than (probably) you or I would because of it.
